Sassuolo vs Juventus: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview

The Old Lady can extend their lead at the summit of Serie A to 11 points if they pick up the win on Sunday

Juventus suffered a rare slip up in their chase for the Serie A title last weekend but can restore their 11-point advantage by winning at Sassuolo.

The Bianconeri were held to a 3-3 draw by Parma last Saturday, though they twice allowed a two-goal advantage to slip, with Gervinho grabbing the visitors’ equaliser in the 93rd minute.

However, Napoli dropped points against Fiorentina on Saturday, missing the chance to increase the pressure on Juve in the process.

Sassuolo are undefeated in three and are aiming to continue their strong start to Serie A life in 2019 against the biggest team in the league.

A 3-3 home draw against Parma last weekend was a rare show of complacency from Juventus, who until that point had won 19 of their 21 Serie A fixtures this season.

Indeed, from 3-1 up, they should have closed out that fixture too against mid-table opponents but instead allowed their advantage to slip, drawing the ire of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had twice found the net.

“I’m happy about the goals but not the result. This is football,” Ronaldo told DAZN.

“We dropped back in the final few minutes and Parma capitalised on our mistakes.”

Head coach Massimiliano Allegri, meanwhile, admired his team’s desire to play but wants them to learn from the errors they made a week ago.

“They need to realise there is no shame in hoofing the ball into the stands if needs be,” he said to DAZN.

“At least we gave those who complained we weren’t entertaining enough something to enjoy.

“It was conceptually the wrong thing to try to keep that in play. Just kick it out.”

Paulo Dybala is also likely to be back in the starting XI after leaving the bench early last weekend when he was an unused substitute. He was forced to apologise to the coach, who called him a “clever boy” for admitting his mistake.

Nevertheless, a more pragmatic Juventus are expected, with a focus on closing the game out once they are ahead.

Sassuolo have enjoyed a positive start to 2019, earning five points from three Serie A matches after being eliminated from the Coppa Italia by Napoli.

Brighton vs Burnley: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview

The Seagulls will hope their FA Cup win over West Brom can propel them to a first league victory of 2019 against the Clarets

With progression through to the fifth round of the FA Cup secured after an extra-time replay victory over Championship opponents West Brom, Brighton & Hove Albion will be hoping they can kick on to a much needed Premier League victory.

Chris Hughton’s side are five points clear of the bottom three but with no wins in the top flight since last year, they will want to convert their knockout form into positive results elsewhere sooner rather than later.

They may fancy their chances against a Burnley side perilously closer to the drop than themselves – but Sean Dyche’s men became the first side to take points off Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United the other week and won’t go down easily.

Both sides need a vital three points, so who will take the spoils on the south coast?

With their FA Cup success sending them to the last 16 at the expense of West Brom this week, Brighton & Hove Albion now turn their attention back to the Premier League as they host Burnley in a game where both sides will be quietly desperate for the win.

Neither side currently sits in the bottom three, five and two points clear of it respectively, with neutral enough form to assure supporters that there is no panic yet.

But the numerous draws scored by both Chris Hughton and Sean Dyche’s side will be frustrating to their managers as they both look to pull clear of what could very quickly become a fierce relegation battle.

If not strictly a six-pointer, then their encounter still gives either side a great chance to pull further into mid-table security – or to slip down towards the chasing pack led by Cardiff.

Albion will be keen to turn their victory over the Baggies into momentum, while the Clarets will be hoping to be third time lucky after draws with Manchester United and Southampton.

The Seagulls have in fact failed to win outside of the FA Cup this year, last picking up three league points in late December against Everton.

Burnley have fared somewhat better with wins lower-table rivals Fulham and Huddersfield helping them to go six unbeaten in the top flight with their only loss of the period a cup drubbing by Manchester City.

It could be too close to call – but neither side will give up the chance of securing some additional safety without a fight.

Hurricanes cruise to victory over Rebels

The Melbourne Rebels have been brought back down to earth by one of the hottest teams in the Super Rugby competition, going down 38-13 to the Hurricanes.

The Melbourne Rebels were eager to show just how serious a contender they are in Super Rugby as the jumped out to a flying start at AAMI Park, dominating 83% of the possession and 100% of territory in the opening 10 minutes as they tested the defence of the Hurricanes.

Sefa Naivalu made a welcome return to the starting side with a typical powerful run to almost cross the line but the Hurricanes continued to hold strong. That was until a Tamati Ellison grubber set up Dom Shipperley for the opening try of the match.

Unfortunately that was one of the only highlights for Shipperley who was involved in friendly-fire when Nic Stirzaker crushed his ankle in a tackle, spelling the end of the night for the star winger.

In what has been a huge talking point during the Rebels home games this season, the turf of AAMI Park was constantly getting ripped up by 850kg of brute force at scrum time.

The Hurricanes then turned on the accelerator, led by dynamic flyhalf Beauden Barrett, as the visiting side scored four unanswered tries before the break. Barrett had 79 run metres, one try, one try-assist and 11 points to his name at halftime.

Former Rebels turned Hurricanes fullback Jason Woodward also enjoyed his return to Melbourne with a starring role to set up a try with a sensational chip and chase and even scoring one himself just shy of the break.

The Hurricanes didn’t slow down in the second half as they denied the Rebels possession to take them out of the game.

It didn’t get any easier for Melbourne when young gun Sean McMahon was issued a yellow card in the 50th minute.

The Hurricanes dominated possession in the second half, holding 75% of the ball but struggled to add points on the scoreboard until a Luke Jones error at the try line assisted Ardie Savea with his first of the night in the 60th minute.

If there wasn’t enough proof already of just how in-form Barrett is, he crossed for his second try of the night, showing lightning reflexes to regather a charge down kick to put the icing on the cake for the Wellington side.

The Rebels remain on top of the Australian conference alongside the Brumbies on 17 points and will re-group ahead of their next match against the Cheetahs next weekend.

Pocock pens heartfelt apology on social media

David Pocock added another entry to his repertoire of classy acts on Wednesday night, issuing a public apology for an incident that handed him his first Super Rugby suspension.

Pocock was suspended for three weeks after pleading guilty to grabbing Michael Leitch’s neck in a maul during the Brumbies’ 23-48 loss to the Chiefs.

The 27-year-old took to his blog davidpocock.com to pen a heartfelt apology for the incident that will see him miss two Super Rugby matches.

“Yesterday I faced the judiciary for the first time in my rugby career. I am incredibly disappointed with my actions. I endeavour to play the game I love in a way that reflects the kind of toughness and decency I think rugby can teach us,” he wrote.

“On Saturday night I did not live up to those standards, placing Michael Leitch in danger by binding on his neck in a maul. It was not my intention to hurt Michael, but in these sorts of circumstances it is not intention that matters. I am grateful that World Rugby and SANZAAR are concerned about making the game safer for all of us.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise again to Michael. And to apologise to the Chiefs, Brumbies and all those who follow rugby. I’d also like to apologise to my team mates who I will let down over the next few weeks while suspended.”

Pocock will miss the Brumbies matches against the Waratahs and the Crusaders, returning for their clash against the Highlanders in New Zealand on April 30.

Ngatai off to France

All Black Charlie Ngatai will join Lyon on a two-year contract from next season, the Top 14 club announced Tuesday.

The 27-year-old back, capped once in 2015 against Samoa, signs from the Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs.

Ngatai has also won 12 caps for the Maori All Blacks, touring Europe twice with the team, in 2012 and 2015.

He is Lyon’s fifth signing for next season after prop Raphael Chaume, flanker Patrick Sobela, half-back Jean-Marc Doussain and winger Noa Nakaitaci.

Gilmore to coach new-look Junior Wallabies

Queensland development coach Jason Gilmore has been unveiled as the Junior Wallabies coach, amid a rejig of the program for 2018

Formerly the Australia U20s, the side has been re-named the Junior Wallabies, and will begin their preparation for the World Cup this month, a move away from the time restrictions the side has struggled with in the past.

Gilmore comes into the setup, replacing Simon Cron who has moved to a contact coach role with NSW, after stints as Queensland U20s coach and in Queensland Premier Rugby and the NRC with Queensland Country.

Rugby Australia head of high performance Ben Whitaker said Gilmore would bring his rugby intelligence

“We’re really excited to have Jason take over the reins of the Junior Wallabies,” he said.

“He has a really smart rugby brain and a real passion for developing young players and this role will also enhance his abilities as an Australian coach coming through the pathway.

“Jason has been a key part of Rugby Australia’s and the Queensland Reds’ coaching programs and he comes into this role really energized for what is a big year for the Junior Wallabies program.

“There are plenty of talented young players in this initial national squad and we’re looking forward to seeing them come together over the next few months.”

Gilmore has named an initial squad of 53 players, who will come together in a Canberra camp this week.

“I’m really honoured to be taking over the role of the Junior Wallabies head coach and I am looking forward to getting into training with the lads and my coaching staff this week,” he said.

“The U20s is an integral part of the ‘Pathway to Gold’ and in building talented players for Super Rugby, Aussie Sevens and for the Wallabies.

“We will work extremely hard to build a squad that has high performance success at the Oceania Rugby U20s and World Rugby U20s Championship and our work starts now to build a group of men capable of delivering.”

This week’s camp will be the first of four ahead of the 2018 Oceania Championships, in April, where Australia takes on New Zealand, Samoa and Fiji.

Overnight, France was announced as the World U20s host for the 2018 World Championship, kicking off on May 30, with Australia drawn in a tricky pool, alongside New Zealand, Japan and Wales.

The tournament will be held in the cities of Béziers, Perpignan and Narbonne, the announcement coming less than a month after France’s shock win of the 2023 Rugby World Cup bid.

Gutsy Brumbies fall short in Christchurch

The Brumbies’ winless streak against the Crusaders has stretched to seven, after a 17-13 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

The Crusaders pressured the Brumbies defence from the outset and it took less than five minutes for winger Seta Tamanivalu to convert that pressure into an early lead.

Rookie Brumbies flyhalf Wharenui Hawera battled to find his feet early in the piece, as the ACT side’s in-field kicks failed to hit their marks.

As the first half ticked on, the Brumbies’ defence was doing all the hard work and that work became all the harder when winger James Dargaville was yellow-carded in the 24th minute.

Dargaville was sent to the bin after a collision with Crusaders fullback Israel Dagg, where the youngster was considered not in a position to catch the ball.

Dagg was immense for the Crusaders and it was only a matter of time before he created a scoring opportunity, as number eight Whetu Douglas scored in the 34th minute.

The Brumbies put the heat on the Crusaders with their first try in the 42nd minute, a slick attacking chain putting man mountain Rory Arnold over in the corner, narrowing the gap to two points.

Crusaders flanker Peter Samu finished off a pushover try and made it a seven-point advantage, though the Brumbies didn’t give up the fight.

A Hawera penalty made the difference four points with 12 minutes left and though the Crusaders held the upperhand, the Brumbies continued to play with their desperation.

Neither side could crack the scoreboard in that final 10 minutes, as the Crusaders held on for

“We always knew it was going to be tough over here,” Brumbies co-captain Sam Carter told SkySports post-match.

Carter praised his side’s defence and maintained an optimistic outlook ahead of their round two clash.

The result leaves the Brumbies winless in Christchurch since 2000 and against the Crusaders at any venue since 2009.

Brumbies can fill Cubelli void: Smith

Brumbies Super Rugby centre Andrew Smith has backed the side’s inexperienced halfbacks to fill the hole left by a potentially season-ending injury to Argentine international Tomas Cubelli.

With Cubelli set to undergo surgery on his ruptured knee tendon on Tuesday, Smith said 22-year-old Joe Powell and uncapped 18-year-old Ryan Lonergan could cover for the loss of another experienced player.

“They’ve been developing really well this pre-season under (Cubelli) so it’s a great opportunity for them to push their case,” Smith said.

With the departures of Stephen Moore, Matt Toomua, Joe Tomane and David Pocock, more than 400 Super Rugby caps left the club at the end of last season.

Christian Lealiifano is unlikely to take part this year with the 117-game Brumbies star recovering from a bone marrow transplant.

The new-look Brumbies were beaten 53-17 by the NSW Waratahs in a trial match on Saturday and Cubelli’s knee injury added to the insult.

Smith admitted there was work to do, with their season opener against the Crusaders less than three weeks away.

“That was the first game for a few guys and we’re still developing some combinations.

“It’s just back to the training paddock and focus on the next job.”

The wholesale changes to the squad will force coach Stephen Larkham to opt for an untried halves pairing.

Wharenui Hawera started at flyhalf in the trial as he pushes his case for a Super Rugby debut after being signed in January on the back of strong performances in New Zealand’s provincial competition.

Ninteen-year-old Nick Jooste is also vying for the playmaker role and his long-range kicking is a major asset to his game.

Young inside centre Jordan Jackson-Hope spent time as a flyhalf in junior rugby but is not eyeing a permanent switch to No.10 at this stage.

The 20-year-old is looking to build on his 2016 when he made his debut off the bench and scored two tries in his two matches.

“I want to try and improve on that and get some more game time at this level,” he said.

Kepa fined a week's wages for Carabao Cup final substitution farce

The goalkeeper was punished after refusing to come out of the match against Manchester City

Chelsea have fined Kepa Arrizabalaga one week’s wages for refusing to be substituted in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

The Spanish goalkeeper went to ground with an apparent injury in the closing moments of extra time, prompting manager Maurizio Sarri to ready penalty specialist Willy Caballero to enter for the impending shoot-out.

A messy cross-field exchange ensued as Kepa argued with Sarri – who had to remain on the touchline – over his ability to remain in the game.

Chelsea would go on to lose the shootout, with Kepa letting a tame penalty run underneath him to contribute to the defeat.

The Stamford Bridge side released fresh statements from both Sarri and Kepa on Monday night, adding that the 24-year-old would be fined a week’s worth of wages.

“I was very happy to play in my first Cup Final for Chelsea yesterday and very proud of the team performance,” the goalie’s statement begins.

“I have thought a lot more about yesterday’s events. Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation.

“I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my team-mates and to the club. I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans.

“I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate.”

Meanwhile, his Italian boss is keen to put the matter to rest and get on with the season at hand.

“Kepa and I have spoken about the incident,” Sarri said. “It was a good conversation. There was a misunderstanding yesterday but he realises he made a big mistake in the way he reacted.

“He has apologised to me, his team-mates and the club. It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for me this matter is now closed.

“The team performance as a whole was extremely positive and it is a shame to see how this incident has overshadowed our efforts in what was a very competitive Cup Final.

“Everyone’s focus is now on the next game and we must all now put this behind us.”

The club also confirmed that Kepa’s fine will be donated to the Chelsea foundation.

Pizarro becomes oldest Bundesliga scorer with last-gasp equaliser for Bremen against Hertha

The Peruvian netted in the 96th minute to claim his side a point and break a 22 year-old record

Claudio Pizarro has become the oldest player to score a goal in Germany’s Bundesliga after his 96th-minute equalizer rescued a point for Werder Bremen against Hertha Berlin.

The Peruvian striker, who turned 40 on October 3, 2018, scored with virtually the last kick of the game at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, cancelling out David Selke’s first-half goal for the hosts.

Pizarro assumes the record from Miroslav Votava, the Czech defensive midfielder who had held the record since 1996 when he also netted for Bremen against Stuttgart.

He takes the title by 15 days from the Czech, who left the club shortly after netting his record-breaking goal more than 22 years ago.

The striker is best known for his time spent playing for Bayern Munich, where he spent nine seasons across two spells.

During that time he won six Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League, scoring as the team knocked out Juventus in the quarter-final.

He is currently in his fourth spell at Bremen, having rejoined them in the summer on a one-year contract.

Despite his years, Pizarro has held down a regular place in Bremen’s team this term, and his last-gasp strike against Hertha on Saturday was his fourth goal of the season for the team that sit tenth in the Bundesliga.

The 40-year-old also had an illustrious career for his country’s national team.

Between making his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in 1999 – a game in which he scored – and his final appearance in 2016, he netted 20 goals in 85 appearances, retiring from international duty shortly after the beginning of Peru’s successful World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign.

It is unknown whether he will prolong his career beyond the end of his Bremen contract, which expires in July.
