PLAYER RATINGS | OGC Nice 1-1 Strasbourg

Ligue 1 22/23, Round 2, 14/8/22

NICE – 1 (Delort 35)

Kasper Schmeichel, 7 – The Dane made two superb saves on his home debut, a smart lunge at Gameiro’s feet early, when he was one-on-one, before a snap low hand to stop Diallo just after halftime while he marshaled his defence with typical authority, as if he’d been at the club for years.

Jordan Lotomba, 4

Jean-Clair Todibo, 6

Dante, 3 – Positionally awry and he was often a little clumsy or loose in his tackling. Nearly 39, he’s starting to look a little too slow for this level and could become a liability.

Melvin Bard, 5

Mario Lemina, 5

Khéphren Thuram, 5

Rareș Ilie, 3

Amine Gouiri, 6 – Scrapes a six after he phased in and out of the game and was withdrawn halfway through the second half but there were flashes of his quality, however, one of which led to the opener as he was too quick for Nyamsi to win the penalty.

Calvin Stengs, 5

Andy Delort, 6

Others: Rosario 5, Ramsey 5, Brahimi 5, Atal 5, Daniliuc 5.

STRASBOURG – 1 (Gameiro 55)

Matz Sels, 5

Gerzino Nyamsi, 3 – He was superb last season but his performance here was cumbersome at times and he was occasionally flustered by Delort having made a rash, late tackle to give away the penalty for the opener.

Alexander Djiku, 4

Maxime Le Marchand, 5

Thomas Delaine, 6

Dimitri Liénard, 5

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, 5

Jean-Eudes Aholou, 5

Adrien Thomasson, 6 – He was quiet for much of the first hour but delivered a deft clipped through ball for the equaliser and was a key instigator for Strasbourg for much of the second half.

Kevin Gameiro, 6

Habib Diallo, 4

Others: Prcić 5, Ajorque 5, Diarra 5, Senaya 5, Perrin 5.

St Étienne going after Irvin Cardona

L’Équipe report that Ligue 2 strugglers St Étienne have identified Brest attacker Irvin Cardona as a potential reinforcement in the final hours of the window.

Following the arrival of Algerian international striker Islam Slimani, SB29 will now seek to achieve some departures from their attacking ranks. Cardona is the fourth choice centre-forward, behind Slimani, Steve Mounié and Jérémy Le Douaron.

ASSE have been pushing for the last 48 hours for the player – Cardona knows that his days are numbered at Brest. Les Verts and Laurent Batlles are willing to make major financial efforts to convince Cardona to join.

Cardona has 12 months remaining on his current contract, and ASSE are most insistent, but the 25-year-old is also attracting interest from Strasbourg who have the player on their shortlist in the event that either Lebo Mothiba or Ludovic Ajorque depart before the end of the window.

Lille ready to offer €10m for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche

L’Équipe have revealed that Lille are interested in Monaco’s promising attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche (20), whilst Foot Mercato have reported that Les Dogues are willing to pay up to €10m for the France U20 international.

Akliouche featured in Monaco’s 1-1 draw against PSG on Sunday evening, replacing the injured Kevin Volland in the 20th minute, before being substituted himself later in the second half. However, during that time, Akliouche showed signs of promise and he is being courted not only by Lille, but also by Lorient, Werder Bremen and Real Sociedad.

Lille are interested in signing the Monaco attacker on a permanent basis and are prepared to spend €10m (including bonuses) to tempt the Principality club to sell.

However, any transfer could prove difficult. As L’Équipe have reported, Monaco are unwilling to let the player leave and his current deal runs until 2024. Due to the impending departure of Sofiane Diop, and the potential long-term absence of Kevin Volland due to injury, Philippe Clement is hoping to count on the player for the rest of the season.

Official | Nice sign Fulham left-back Joe Bryan on loan

Nice have tonight announced the signing of English left-back Joe Bryan on a loan deal from Premier League side Fulham, in a move which does not include a permanent option.

Les Aiglons have been targeting a left-back throughout the summer window, having made attempts to sign Real Madrid legend Marcelo among other names.

With the Londonders signing Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa, Bryan – who has yet to appear in the league this season – would have seen his playing time decrease even more.

He made 15 appearances in the Championship last season, registering one assist, and has a total of 117 games for the club since joining from Bristol City in 2018. During that time, he has scored five goals.

The Premier League has become something a favoured market for the INEOS-owned Nice in the past few weeks, with Arsenal’s Nicolas Pépé and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel also moving to the Côte d’Azur side.

Mauro Icardi expected in Istanbul tonight ahead of Galatasaray move

According to Le Parisien Turkish club Galatasaray are expecting the transfer of Mauro Icardi to the club to completed very soon, with the player expected in Istanbul this evening. The deal is reportedly close to completion with the final details yet to be sorted, the Turkish club have booked a flight for the striker, who is set to leave Milan tonight to travel to Turkey.

Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that the striker was nearing a loan move to Turkish side Galatasaray, which will include an option to make the move permanent.

Icardi has yet to feature for PSG this season and has fallen further down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes due to the arrival of Hugo Ekitike (20). The Argentine recently posted a picture of himself in Miami.

According to Romano, Icardi is “close” to joining Galatasaray on loan with an option to make the deal permanent. The move, first revealed by Romano, has been confirmed by RMC. According to the French publication, the deal is “on the right path, and only a few details need to be finalised.” They added that should everything go well, he will undergo his medical in the next 48 hours.

The Argentine international has 38 goals in 92 appearances for the Parisian club.

Lionel Messi’s 63-game run without a Champions League substitution ends

As reported by Le Parisien via Opta, Lionel Messi saw his 63-game run without being substituted in a Champions League game come to an end last Tuesday against Juventus, after Christophe Galtier brought him off for new signing Carlos Soler with five minutes to go in the game.

Ever since October of 2014, the Argentine had played the full 90 minutes in every one of the games he started in Europe’s premier club competition.

Messi substitutions in the league last year, during the reign of Mauricio Pochettino, had raised more than a few eyebrows, however this year Christophe Galtier has been able to bring members of his star front three off at the end of games without any discussion. In the case of Messi, the 35-year-old’s fitness will also be a factor the manager takes into account, which would mean he is unlikely to play the full 90 minutes every game this season.

PSG would go on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a first-half double from Kylian Mbappé, although the Frenchman could have put the game to bed by squaring it for Neymar at 2-0 instead of going it alone. Instead, Juventus then reduced the deficit and made for a tense finale.

Steve Mandanda, Martin Terrier and Benjamin Bourigeaud receive provisional France call-ups

The Rennes trio of Steve Mandanda (37), Martin Terrier (25) and Benjamin Bourigeaud (28) have earned provisional call-ups to Didier Deschamps’ France squad for their Nations League fixtures later this month, according to France Bleu.

Should Mandanda be included in the squad, it would be the first time he has been selected since Euro 2021. He has enjoyed a positive start to life at Rennes, having made the move from Marseille this summer.

Neither Terrier nor Bourigeaud have any France caps to their name, although there have been strong calls, notably from Thierry Henry, for Terrier to be included in the squad after a breakthrough campaign last season. After scoring 21 goals in his previous Ligue 1 campaign, he already has three goals in seven appearances this season.

Bourigeaud, who only has two France U20 caps to his name, is also in line for his first call-up. Deschamps will name his squad for the fixtures against Austria and Denmark on Thursday.
