'Hazard would add a lot' – Carvajal backs Madrid to sign Chelsea star

The Spanish side’s defender believes the Belgian would offer plenty to justify the club splashing to cash for him to join

Eden Hazard would be a great addition to the Real Madrid attack, according to defender Dani Carvajal.

Goal understands that Real Madrid are sending a representative to London to meet with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia as Los Blancos commit to a final push to get a transfer deal for the Belgian over the line.

And, while Chelsea hope to see Hazard snapped up for €130 million (£115m/$146m) and Madrid hope to pay closer to €100m (£89m/$112m), there is a firm expectation that a deal will inevitably be done.

Carvajal, who has been at Madrid since 2013, believes the winger’s willingness to be a focal point for the attack would be a great benefit at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Hazard would add a lot to our attack,” the right-back told El Larguero on Tuesday.

“He is a player who wants the ball and does not hide.”

Zinedine Zidane has already started rebuilding Madrid, sealing the signing of talented striker Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday .

The 21-year-old racked up 27 goals in 47 appearances for the German side this season and signed on a six-year deal with the Spanish giants.

Jovic will join an attacking pool of talent in the Spanish capital that includes Karim Benzema and Mariano Diaz, and Carvajal hopes the Serbia international can be a key member of the squad next season.

“Jovic is a great [number] nine,” he said. “I hope he is decisive.”

The summer rebuild is in hopes of avoiding another down season for the club.

Madrid finished third in La Liga but were a distant 19 points behind rivals and champions Barcelona.

The club were also bounced from the Champions League by Ajax in the round of 16 following a shock second-leg loss at home to the Dutch side.

And the defender was glad to see the back of the 2018-19 campaign, which he called “the worst” in his time with the club.

“It was the worst season since I’ve been in the first team,” he said.

“The best thing is that the season has ended. Zidane’s arrival gave us oxygen, but we haven’t had a good reaction either.”

‘Pogba isn’t Keane and criticism is unfair’ – ‘Magic’ Man Utd star has Saha support

The former Manchester United striker has spoken out in defence of a fellow Frenchman, claiming it is not his job to be a leader at Old Trafford

The criticism being aimed at Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is “unfair”, says Louis Saha, with the Frenchman required to provide “magic”, not leadership.

A World Cup winner took in another eventful campaign in 2018-19.

He started the season as captain under Jose Mourinho and finished it with more questions being asked of his future as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pieces together plans at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old delivered plenty of memorable showings, helping himself to 16 goals and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

More criticism has come his way, though, with many questioning the role of an £89 million ($112m) asset and his ability to become a talismanic presence.

Saha feels that debate is missing the point, with a fellow Frenchman never going to be a Roy Keane type who drags his team-mates along with him.

“I am really a big fan of Paul,” the former United striker said in The Mirror.

“You target leadership for the best players in the team and Paul is definitely one of them, so the pressure is always on him. But it’s unfair on him to have this burden all of the time because the set-up of the team is not built with leaders around him – and perhaps that is not his best quality.

“Of course, he brings a special quality because he can do special things, but I don’t think leadership is his strength.

“So let’s find the right people to be around him because he can do magic. That’s what he has been bought by United to do – rather than as a Roy Keane-type or others that you can compare.

“When I see what is happening with Paul, I would say it is unfair to ask him to do something unnatural to him.”

Pogba is not the only France international at Old Trafford to have seen his value called into question.

Anthony Martial has faced similar struggles for consistency, but he is another that Saha believes remains integral to the Red Devils cause.

He added: “Of course, they have great talent and I have to say I’m jealous. It is as simple as that. You look at those guys and they can do everything.

“But the thing is it’s unfair to focus on one aspect of their game that is not one of their strong qualities.

“As for Anthony, he is the type of player, who, on his day, is unplayable, but, again, he needs a role model that will give him a target to go for and set a tone for working harder.

“In my view, it’s not fair to target those two French players. It is about the squad and the squad right now is not there. Every day in a group is about getting the best out of the personnel.

“For instance, a player like Gary Neville was essential for me as a striker. Every day he would be there on my back making sure I get it. I knew that every time I missed an opportunity or a dribble then he would be on my back.

“Those days have gone now and that is why I think Ole has some work to do. I think United have to find some new leaders.”

American billionaire Commisso completes Fiorentina purchase

La Viola confirm the club has been bought from the Della Valle family, ushering in a new era for the Italian side

American entrepreneur Rocco Commisso has completed his purchase of Serie A side Fiorentina.

A year after failing to land a controlling stake in AC Milan, Italian-born Commisso has agreed to buy one of their top-flight rivals from the Della Valle family.

The 69-year-old, who is also the chairman of the New York Cosmos, announced the deal – worth a reported €160million – on Thursday to usher in a new era at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

“I am forever a fan of Italian football and there are no words to describe how incredibly honoured I am to have the opportunity to contribute to write the next chapter in the story of a legendary club like Fiorentina,” Commisso, chairman and CEO of Mediacom, said in a statement.

“Florence is known across the entire world as a city that represents the best of Italian culture. In these three years of contact to acquire the club, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how important La Viola is for this city and its fans.

“I would like to thank the Della Valle family for managing Fiorentina for the past 17 years. Diego and Andrea deserve great honours for saving this club from financial instability. They leave a strong foundation to build the club on.”

Southgate confirms Sterling start but stays quiet on Kane and captaincy

The Three Lions boss did not want to give Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman any clues ahead of their last four clash in Portugal

Gareth Southgate would not say if Raheem Sterling will captain England in their Nations League semi-final against Netherlands as he is unsure if star striker Harry Kane will start.

Sterling will make his 50th appearance for the national team when they take on Ronald Koeman’s team in Portugal on Thursday.

Kane returned from injury to feature for Tottenham in the Champions League final last week and is part of the squad for the midweek clash.

Reports this week said that Manchester City star Sterling would take the captain’s armband in Kane’s absence from the starting XI, but Three Lions boss Southgate stayed quiet when asked if the Spurs star would be included.

“If I confirmed anything about the team other than Raheem playing I would be doing half of Ronald [Koeman’s] job for him. If I tell you Harry Kane’s playing tomorrow I’m giving Ronald half the team as well,” he told reporters.

“I don’t want to discuss the captaincy. Harry Kane is our captain. If Harry Kane doesn’t play I have a decision to make. At this moment in time, I’m not prepared to do that.”

Sterling says he does not know if he will lead the team against the Dutch, but said he would be proud to fill the void left by Kane as he reaches a half century of caps.

“That’s something that is down to the manager,” he said.

“That’s not for me to decide but if the manager did do that it is something I would do proudly for sure.”

He added: “Growing up and watching a lot of England games you always had a dream to play for England but I never thought one day I would be able to say, if the manager picks me or not, that I would be in with a chance to make my 50th cap.

“It’s a massive achievement for me and it’s something that I will treasure for the rest of my life and so will my family.

“To my 17-year-old self, I would say just keep going, keep enjoying your football and keep learning. That’s the most important message really.”

FIFA 20 new features: What changes will be on the new game?

With the new game set for release later this year, Goal takes a look at what changes we can expect

EA Sports have confirmed that FIFA 20 will be released at the end of September.

With each new release, the pressure is on the series’ game developers to improve the product and they take a wide range of views into consideration when figuring out which areas need focus.

Feedback from professional Esports gamers, casual players, the online community and in-house experts are all heeded as changes are implemented and new features are rolled out.

This means EA’s developers are well equipped to give customers what they want while also pursuing their own creative visions for their flagship football game.

Ahead of the release of FIFA 20, Goal takes a look at the gameplay changes and new features we can expect.

Small-sided street football is back in FIFA 20 with the introduction of a new game mode called Volta (which means ‘return’ in Portuguese).

Apparently one of the most requested additions from users, the new feature will be much different to the famous FIFA Street series in terms of its authenticity, opting for greater realism.

Players will be able to play three-a-side, four-a-side and five-a-side matches using their own individualised character or household names such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Volta will be playable online – with leagues and so forth – and there will also be a story mode, which will seemingly replace The Journey.

The May edition of EA Sports’ ‘Pitch Notes’ revealed that the next iteration of FIFA will incorporate a number of changes to A.I. defending and movement.

Planned tackling ‘ will be a new feature that favours manual defending and defending systems overall are being renewed to reward manual defending.

Auto tackles and auto blocks will become less likely in FIFA 20 thanks to the planned reduction in ‘contain’ and ‘secondary contain’ effectiveness.

As well as that, those who choose to manually defend in a given scenario will benefit from an improved jockey system , which is designed to enhance agility and precision.

Furthermore, when defending set-pieces, computer intelligence will be improved in order to make marking match-ups more realistic. So, taller players will try to keep tabs on opponents of a similar height.

EA Sports are naturally striving for greater realism in FIFA 20 and things are getting harder, so it should be no surprise to learn that, as with other aspects of gameplay, passing is going to be harder.

The pressure of scenario a player finds themselves in will correlate with how difficult it is to complete a pass effectively. So, 180 degree, first-time and awkward position passes will become more prone to interception .

Corollary to that though, passes will be easier and there will be less chance of a mistake when a player is under little pressure or has their body positioned well on the pitch when receiving or playing the ball.

There will also be a new option to ‘dink’ a through pass on the ground or in the air, while a driven pass-and-go mechanism will be enabled as well.

The ‘Timed Finishing’ mechanism that was introduced in FIFA 19 is set to be further fine-tuned in FIFA 20 and it looks like it will become harder to score.

The green timing window for timed shots will be reduced in FIFA 20 from two-to-four frames to just two frames for every shot, which means players will need more skill in order to hit the back of the net.

As well as that alteration, difficult 180 degree shots will now be less powerful than they were in FIFA 19, while timed shot accuracy will now result in lower precision.

Staying on the theme of scoring, volley shots will also be less accurate and result in more volatile outcomes. It will also become more difficult to score headers in a crowded box.

While shooting is being tweaked to make it more difficult, gamers will be relieved to learn that one-on-one finishing situations will be easier in FIFA 20.

Shooting accuracy will improve in an ‘easy’ scenario – say, an open net – and goalkeepers’ reactions will no longer be ‘superhuman’.

FIFA players who enjoy the rush of breezing past multiple opponents using skill moves will have to be prepared to up their game in FIFA 20.

Using skill moves is set to get harder in the next edition, with EA Sports indicating that chances of error increase “exponentially” when chaining more than two skill moves together.

As mentioned, goalkeepers that were seemingly superhuman in FIFA 19 will now be reduced to mere mortals in FIFA 20, with reactions in one-on-one situations altered to reflect reality.

When users opt to manually control goalkeepers, they will also notice that the effectiveness of their movement will be reduced from the last game, so that means no more messing around with the ‘sweeper keeper’.

FIFA 20 will incorporate a new Ball Physics System that is intended to make the game more realistic in terms of how the ball moves through the air.

The trajectories of shots will be different as a result, with how the ball spins and bounces fluctuating depending on connection and so on.

So expect more ‘knuckleball’ shots in FIFA 20.

Arsenal target Claude-Maurice hoping for Borussia Monchengladbach move

The Lorient winger is also wanted by West Ham but has instead set his sights on a summer transfer to the Bundesliga

Lorient winger Alexis Claude-Maurice has revealed he wants to join Borussia Monchengladbach, despite interest from the Premier League.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has reportedly been the subject of a bid from Arsenal while West Ham are also understood to have had an offer turned down earlier in June.

However, despite that interest, Claude-Maurice is keen on a move to the Bundesliga with Monchengladbach his ideal club.

Claude-Maurice hopes to seal a move away from Lorient this summer and told L’Equipe: “Now I feel like it’s time to leave, to join a club that is playing at a higher level.

“I want to join Monchengladbach. It is a club that relies on young people, there is a good structure, the team will play in the Europa League. This project pleases me and suits me.”

Arsenal are keen to strengthen having missed out on the Champions League after May’s Europa League final defeat by Chelsea and one area of priority is the wide positions.

With some reports suggesting manager Unai Emery only has £45 million (€50m) to spend during this transfer window, he may now look elsewhere with Claude-Maurice’s valuation close to €20m (£17.83m).

The north London club have also been heavily linked with Lille forward Nicolas Pepe though reportedly face fierce competition from Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Claude-Maurice, meanwhile, scored 14 goals last season and was named in the Ligue 2 Team of the Season. Despite his scoring feats, however, Lorient missed out on promotion to Ligue 1 and the youngster is now ready to take the next step of his career.

West Ham are also admirers and have enjoyed their own success in the French market after landing centre-back Issa Diop from Toulouse in 2018. The 22-year-old went on to enjoy a stellar campaign at London Stadium and has been linked with Manchester United as the Old Trafford club plot a mass rebuild.

Having come through the ranks at Stade du Moustoir, Claude-Maurice has represented France at Under-20 level.

Should the player seal his dream move, he would join young compatriots Mickael Cuisance and Mamadou Doucoure at the German club while Alassane Plea also signed from Nice 12 months ago.

Kubo's Real Madrid move a bitter blow for Barcelona! 'Japanese Messi' finally set to shine in Spain

The teenager was forced to depart La Masia following a transfer ban at Camp Nou but has now joined the Catalans’ bitter rivals

With a nickname like “the Japanese Messi”, Takefusa Kubo has a lot to live up to.

Even more so now, with the one-time La Masia gem having signed for the Catalans’ bitter rivals, Real Madrid.

Kubo was picked up by Barcelona at the age of 10 with the hope that he would blossom into a first-team star at Camp Nou, and perhaps even aid the transition into a post-Messi world.

And yet he has spent the past three years back in his native Japan, largely hidden from the gaze of European football fans after he unwittingly became embroiled in the Blaugrana’s transfer irregularities, and was de-registered when they were handed a transfer ban by FIFA in 2015.

“I wasn’t picked to play in games,” he recalls of his final months in Spain during an exclusive interview with Goal.. “Although I wasn’t playing in games I still had to go to the matches, just watching my team-mates playing. They were winning the games but I couldn’t be totally happy.

“At first, I really didn’t want to come back [to Japan],” he continues. “I was so used to living there and also felt comfortable in the team, so I wondered ‘why?’.

“I made so many efforts to get used to living over there, and I was afraid that I had to do it all over again. However, despite my worries, I fitted into life in Japan very quickly when I was back, so that was good.”

Fitting back into life is an understatement when it comes to football.

Having originally signed with FC Tokyo’s youth team, he was quickly promoted to the senior squad. At the age of 15 years, five months and one day he became the youngest player in J.League history. Five months later, he added the youngest goalscorer in J.League history record to his list of honours.

Such records did not necessarily translate to regular first-team football, but an impression had been made.

A spell out on loan at Yokohama F. Marinos in 2018 offered him a further opportunity to train alongside and play against senior professionals, and he has this season become a regular in the FC Tokyo starting line-up.

His performances saw him named in Goal’s NxGn list of the top 50 teenage talents on the planet in March and now he is perfectly primed to belatedly make an impact in Spain having joined Madrid.

Goal understands that Barca made a promise to Kubo that they would continue to follow his progress given he was the most talented of those who were forced to leave La Masia four years ago.

However, in a hammer blow for the Blaugrana, he is now bound for the Santiago Bernabeu, where he will initially form part of Madrid’s Castilla squad, providing him with the perfect platform to settle back into life in Spain.

Kubo, though, is as ambitious as they come, and is, thus, aiming to establish himself at the very highest level as quickly as possible.

“When it comes to football, I always want to aim at the top,” he says. “I am most looking forward to what I will do in the future myself, and intend to spare no effort for that.

“I look forward to seeing my potential, and try to climb up the ladder one step at the time, one by one.

“I am still incomplete. I don’t usually speak like this, but I’m still a 17-year-old player. There is much more to come. I must believe my future is bright, and do my best to grow further.”

And while he now hopes to develop at Real, Kubo freely admits that the side he most enjoys watching right now is the one that succeeded the Blancos as European champions earlier this month.

“The team I think play the most interesting football is Liverpool,” he admits. “I feel they are awesome when I watch their games. It’s not really to say they are my ‘favourite’, but more like ‘awesome’.

“I like fast and skilful players. All the big teams have these types of players, and when I watch them I feel they are awesome.

“I am not very fast, so I really like players who possess overwhelming speed. I also like Douglas Costa at Juventus too. Those players make me feel ‘Wow, awesome!’.”

Awesome may well be the buzzword when it comes to describing Kubo in the not-too-distant future.

Following his transfer to Madrid, the next superstar of Asian football is set to become a lot more familiar to western audiences in the coming years – and not before time.

Rio Ferdinand claims he's spoken to Man Utd about sporting director role

Click:路軌燈

The Red Devils great is interested in the club’s sporting director position but insists he will not lose sleep if snubbed

Rio Ferdinand claims he has spoken to Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about the sporting director position the club are trying to fill.

United have long been keen on a structural change that would see the club hire someone to oversee football operations, allowing Woodward to focus on the commercial side.

Initially, the club were thought to be hopeful of making an appointment ahead of the close-season transfer window, allowing the new hire to instigate necessary changes to the playing staff.

Despite plenty of speculation linking people with the role, things have gone cold in recent months and a recent report claimed the club have stalled on hiring someone, with Woodward set to remain in charge of transfers for the time being.

However, former United star Ferdinand has not been shy in declaring his desire for the position and says he has discussed the job with Woodward.

“I’ve always spoken to Ed since I left, anyway. I had that type of relationship with him,” Ferdinand told BBC Sportsweek.

“I’ve not seen him at a game, so all the chats I’ve had with him have been on the phone or I go and see him when I’m in London.

“I’m not the type to dilly-dally around. I’ve seen the stuff in the papers. ‘What’s that role about?’ I’ve asked that question – so yes, I have spoken to him.

“I’m very honest and Ed’s open and honest with me. Manchester United and the powers that be will decide as and when they are going to put someone into that role.

“If I am the person on that list and the person they are going to talk to, then that time will come.

“It’s nice to be on a list in such a responsible role at such a prestigious club. If the call comes I will say, ‘thank you very much for that’, but if that call doesn’t come, I’ll not lose sleep over it.”

Ferdinand won 14 major trophies during his United playing career, including six Premier League titles and the European Cup.

The 40-year-old has taken up a role as a pundit since retiring from football in 2015, covering Premier League and Champions League matches for BT Sport while also working with the BBC.

How will Mexico line up against Martinique?

With his team all but into the Gold Cup quarterfinals, look for El Tri manager Tata Martino to make several changes to his lineup

UPDATE: Raul Jimenez, Andres Guarado and Edson Alvarez start as Mexico makes six changes

Click Here: geelong cats guernsey 2019

Mexico isn’t technically into the Gold Cup knockout stages yet, but barring the most stunning upset in Gold Cup history it should be there soon.

Martinique doesn’t present the same sort of challenge Canada did, and even that challenge was one Mexico overcame in a 3-1 victory during the week. Mexico manager Tata Martino likely is looking for his team to be fresh ahead of the knockout stages and should give rest to some key components of his squad.

He also has a team nearly at full fitness, with midfielder Erick Gutierrez the only player ruled out of Sunday’s Group A finale. That could mean the first minutes of the Gold Cup for attacker Rodolfo Pizarro and center back Hector Moreno, each of whom were carrying knocks that kept them out of wins over Cuba and Canada.

As we do before each match, Goal has put together three projections for a possible starting XI. Check back an hour before the game to see what Martino decides!

This is the lineup Martino is most likely to utilize. It features seven changes from his team that beat Canada.

Essentially, this would give everyone a rest except for the players who really have no back-up. So, Jesus Gallardo gets the start at left back because there’s really no other left back. Same with Andres Guardado at left interior midfielder after the injury to Erick Gutierrez, Raul Jimenez up top as the team’s best No. 9 and Roberto Alvarado with him as one of the wingers.

Other than those ‘irreplaceables’, everyone is getting a refresh. That even extends to Guillermo Ochoa, the No.1 goalkeeper. He’ll be in goal for the knockout rounds, but look for Santos Laguna goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco to get the nod Sunday.

At right back, Fernando Navarro could replace Luis “Chaka” Rodriguez and make his Mexico debut at a major tournament. In the middle, it would be Hector Moreno, getting minutes for the first time after his pre-tournament injury, and young Monterrey center back Cesar Montes. Nestor Araujo and Diego Reyes would get a breather, and Carlos Salcedo could have another game not to put stress on his knee, which has been bothering the Tigres center back.

Edson Alvarez is an interesting one, since he only returned to the starting XI last week. But the rest for Reyes may be more valuable, as would Alvarez seeing more time in a central midfield role where he has excelled but has not played as often as other positions during his career. Guardado is to his left with Carlos Rodriguez on the right, with he and Jonathan dos Santos continuing to alternate starts at that spot.

Up top, a fit Rodolfo Pizarro gets his first minutes of the tournament, putting El Tri’s top attacking trio together for the first time in the Gold Cup.

This is the same lineup as above, but rather than risking players who came in with a knock, they are given more time to recover. Of course, Martino may want to give those players minutes so they can get into a good rhythm ahead of the most important matches in the tournament. If it’s too soon for them to come in, though, Mexico could utilize a look like this.

Uriel Antuna has made the most of his opportunity replacing Pizarro, with a hat trick against Cuba in the first game and an assist against Canada in the second. Even if he does not start in the business end of the tournament, he would give Martino an option against Martinique.

This also would see Hector Moreno given a break as well. It is probably up to him and what the medical staff has told Martino about his knock. Moreno has played in Europe for more than a decade. He does not necessarily need the burn against Martinique, but if he wants to play to get ready, Martino will be happy for the left-footer to come in. If not, Nestor Araujo gets the nod once again.

I have a hunch this is not the XI Martino will go with. He has shown a willingness to give chances to players like Navarro, who perhaps are a bit behind others on the roster but are still looking to compete for a spot. The reward is minutes in matches that still matter but may not stretch Mexico as much as a game like Canada. Martinique fits the bill.

That said, this would be the same lineup Martino used against Canada, with Guardado in for Guti. If Martino believes the best way to get through the tournament is by not making any modifications, this would be his XI.

'We do not weaken without him' – Alves says Brazil remain strong even without Neymar

The Copa America hosts are no weaker without star their forward, according to his club and international team-mate

Dani Alves believes Brazil are no weaker without Neymar as they chase success at the Copa America.

Neymar was ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury in what was a blow to the hosts, who got their campaign underway with a 3-0 win over Bolivia on Friday.

While Alves praised the Paris Saint-Germain star’s quality, the Selecao captain feels Brazil are no weaker without the 27-year-old.

“I believe that every time we come to the national team, we wear this shirt, we have to prove it, regardless of whether or not Neymar is there, we have to prove it because we represent a historical team, very respected worldwide,” he told a news conference on Sunday.

“But when you have an extra, like Ney, you become a little stronger. But you do not weaken without it, you only increase your qualities, you increase your power, but you do not diminish without him.

“Our responsibility remains the same – we represent a history and we have to defend this history with great honour.”

Only Cafu (142) and Roberto Carlos (125) have played more games for Brazil than Alves (110) and the PSG full-back, who is coming out of contract, has no plans to slow down.

Alves said he was eyeing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but knows he must continue performing.

“It [2022 World Cup] is a goal I have, but I do not allow myself to look too far forward, because when you look far ahead you forget to look at now,” he said.

“I cannot forget to look at the now because the opportunities I have to be here can not to be distracted with the future and not with the past. What matters is the present.

“I reinvent myself. When you reach a certain age, you begin to raise doubts, a lot of talk about the selection is renewed or the clubs have to renew, have more players, young people, but both in the clubs and in the national team, it values itself by results.”

Brazil take on Venezuela in Salvador on Tuesday in their second game in Group A.
