Professional performance helps Mexico pass first real test of Martino era

Both managers will like what they saw in a competitive group match that proved El Tri’s credentials as the tournament favorite

This was always going to be the tough one.

Mexico saw off South American opponents in the build-up to the Gold Cup. El Tri knew it would roll past Cuba. Martinique on matchday three hardly intimidates. Canada? Well, with players in some of Europe’s top leagues and a renewed sense of optimism thanks to an exciting new generation? The Canadians could pose a challenge.

They did.

John Herdman put together a game plan that made his team tough to break down. The only thing that could undo The Reds’ five-man back line was a mistake or a golazo.

Mexico got one of each and then, when a response was needed after conceding, added a third.

Roberto Alvarado put the ball in the back of the net in the 40th minute, slotting in a rebound after Raul Jimenez was gifted a shooting chance by Canada defender Zachary Brault-Guillard. Just after the halftime break, it was Andres Guardado, in off the bench for the injured Erick Gutierrez, providing the golazo.

It was the typically consistent Nestor Araujo who gave Herdman’s side a reason for optimism, gifting Jonathan David a ball the teenager moved on to Lucas Cavallini. The Puebla forward scored, but the hope was short-lived. Uriel Antuna beat two men down the right wing and directed a cross toward the penalty spot. Guardado shifted to his right foot, took a shot and watched as his effort deflected off a defender, off the post and in.

“Clearly, the level of demand was very high today. When you see what happens here, Copa America, what could happen in the Euros, honestly, today, when teams are well-organized it’s hard to attack,” Mexico manager Tata Martino said in his post-match news conference. “What I liked was that the team still controlled the game, but it was really hard for us to be able to translate the amount of the ball we had into chances to score.

“I really value the fact that we won a game with these characteristics. I think it’s a good point of the game for what we’re going to find from the quarterfinals on.”

Ultimately, each manager will be happy enough with how his team played. Mexico faced a challenge and overcame it. El Tri are well on their way to winning all three group games for just the second time in Gold Cup history and easing into the quarterfinals. Canada should be there too, with optimism a semifinal place and a rematch against Martino’s team is within reach. In fact, Herdman said he planned this match with a future rematch in mind.

“We didn’t want to show everything tonight,” he said. “We wanted to learn a lot from Mexico. We’ve got an important game against Cuba which hopefully will qualify us for the quarterfinals. Tonight we lost, but we learned, and we learned a lot.”

Martino stressed before the match how much he wanted his team to take this game seriously. His players payed heed, with a professional effort against a Canada team that was frustrating – especially for the first half-hour of the game. Adversity has been uncommon in the Martino era, which seems to have unsettled the Argentine himself. Multiple times in news conference he has referenced learning more about a team and its style of play by losing than by winning.

A more pleasant way to learn a similar lesson is to have a game like the one at Mile High Stadium on Wednesday. For the first time since the manager took over in January, his team needed to break down a well-drilled opponent. While Canada had played competitive clashes in the Concacaf Nations League, Mexico was playing friendly matches against South American teams in transition. Those teams had more quality, yes, but less of an idea of how they wanted to play. Herdman’s players knew exactly what it wanted to do and nearly did it.

They were frustrated by a Mexico team that had its own ideas, that stayed true to Martino’s style of play and ultimately let that style show. When Canada could’ve gotten back into the match, Mexico shut down the mini-rally.

Martino’s squad did what it needed to do. Objective achieved. Job done. Now, it’s on to a final group game that should be less taxing. The business end of the tournament awaits.

Joao Felix at the Prado Museum the strangest transfer announcements

Atletico Madrid welcomed their big money signing in a very unique way. What other clubs also made some different but memorable announcements?

Atletico Madrid chose to announce the signing of Benfica starlet Joao Felix on Wednesday in a very particular way.

The Spanish side picked up the Benfica star in a club record €126 million (£113m/$142m) deal, making him the third most expensive signing in football history.

As such, they seemed to feel the need to do more than posting a message on Twitter with the player’s photo, and the Madrid club went much further, releasing one of the most curious announcements of signings in recent memory.

Under the slogan #PureTalent, Atletico took the former Benfica forward to the National Museum of the Prado, located in Madrid, and recorded a video in which the footballer and art are both central figures.

With that in mind, here are some other transfer announcement which were made public in memorable and striking ways…

'Neymar is not a good example' – La Liga president Tebas hopes PSG star does not return to Barca

The Brazilian is linked with a return to his former club, but Javier Tebas would prefer for the move not to happen

La Liga president Javier Tebas insisted he would prefer for Neymar not to return to Barcelona, questioning the forward’s behaviour as rumours continue to swirl about a possible summer transfer.

Neymar is heavily linked with a return to Camp Nou, two years after a world-record €222 million (£198 million/$252 million) switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

It comes after PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in June the Ligue 1 giants would no longer put up with any “celebrity behaviour” at the club, seemingly taking a shot at the Brazil forward.

Tebas questioned Neymar’s behaviour on Sunday, saying he did not want Barca to sign the superstar forward again.

“I prefer that Neymar does not return to Barca,” he told Onda Cero .

“We always want to bring great players, but in the case of Neymar that behaviour is not good for the competition because in the end the news is if the player has done this or that.

“We have worked a lot in La Liga to maintain the values and we don’t want to change the image.”

Neymar was at Barcelona originally from 2013-17, as the Brazil star formed an attack alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez that guided the club to two La Liga crowns and a Champions League title during his time in Spain.

Barcelona are also expected to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, while several of their players are linked with moves away to fund that switch and Neymar’s return.

Tebas talked up Neymar’s talent, but was unsure whether the 27-year-old set a good example off the pitch.

“He can be a great player, but the behaviour is very important in the values we transmit in the competition,” he said.

“If outside the field the example is not correct, I prefer that he doesn’t return to La Liga because he is not a good example.”

Neymar was forced off of Brazil’s Copa America squad due to an injury suffered in a pre-tournament friendly against Qatar.

Who is Brazil vs Argentina referee Roddy Zambrano?

The South American official will be in charge of a massive match at the Copa America

Roddy Zambrano will be the referee in charge of a blockbuster Copa America semi-final clash between Brazil and Argentina on Tuesday.

The Ecuadorian has been FIFA listed since 2012 and began his career in Ecuador’s Serie A competition.

At 41, Zambrano has already officiated 250 senior games, dishing out 1203 yellow cards and 60 reds during that span.

He has only given 89 penalties across his career however suggesting he’s not easily swayed to point to the spot.

Zambrano is not short on big-game experience either – having previously refereed matches at the 2016 Olympics, the U-20 World Cup in 2017 and the Copa Libertadores.

The Ecuadorian made his Copa America debut this year when he officiated a group stage clash between Bolivia and Peru with Zambrano awarding one penalty and handing out five yellows as the Incas won 3-1.

With VAR being used at the tournament, Zambrano is set for a tough test on Tuesday night in arguably the biggest match of his still-young career as Brazil tackle Argentina on home soil.

Both nations have failed to hit top gear so far at this year’s edition of the Copa America with Lionel Messi recently admitting he’s struggled to date.

“The truth is that it’s not been my best Copa America, not what I expected,” Messi said after Argentina beat Venezuela 2-0.

“There are matches that occur in this way. You cannot play a lot, it’s complicated for those of us who want to do something different, to avoid rivals.

“The important thing is that we won and we continue.”

Brazilian coach Tite has meanwhile revealed just how much the semi-final match has been weighing on his mind.

“I couldn’t sleep properly, I’m not Superman, I’m the way I am and I can deal with that,” Tite said on Monday.

“Yesterday I woke up at 3.15 am, I was thinking about what I’m going to do.”

With a place in the Copa America final on the line, both sides will be desperate to progress with Zambrano the man expected to control what could become an explosive affair.

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of defender Bjorn Engels from Stade Reims as the club continues its summer spending spree.

Engels becomes Villa’s latest addition for a fee believed to be around £7 million ($9m).

Villa are set to return to the Premier League this upcoming season after attaining promotion from the Championship and have spent big money to ensure the team is ready to compete and avoid a quick relegation.

The club has now spent nearly £100 million to retool the squad ahead of the return to the top flight, with Engels the latest signing to be part of that project as the 24-year-old defender joins from Stade Reims.

The defender spent last campaign on loan with the Ligue 1 club, where he made 33 appearances before the French side opted to trigger a purchase option in Engels’ contract.

He will now head to Villa, though, as he moves to his fourth team after previously playing for Club Brugge in his native Belgium as well as Greek side Olympiacos.

Senegal and Tunisia meet at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday looking to book their place in Friday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, across the capital in the Cairo International Stadium.

Both of these sides came through the quarter-final stage in normal time after being drawn against some of the tournament’s surprise packages, with Senegal sneaking past Benin with a single goal and Tunisia dispatching Madagascar 3-0.

Senegal’s imperious form so far, which has seen them only concede one goal in five games at the tournament so far, sees them placed as the favourites, but 2004 champions Tunisia have the more impressive history in the tournament.

Senegal have only ever reached one Africa Cup of Nations final, losing to Cameroon back in 2002. But with key figures like Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gueye in their primes, there is a sense of destiny that this is their year.

Mane is the tournament’s joint top scorer with three, and has Henri Camara’s national record of 29 goals in his sights.

With the Liverpool man on one flank and either Keita Balde or rising star Ismaila Sarr on the other, they pose a huge threat out wide but manager Aliou Cisse is taking nothing for granted.

“Tunisia are very special and very strong,” he said. “They possess special skills and their players are capable of creating the difference.

“However we’re in the semi-finals for the first time since 2002 and this motivates us to win.

“We have improved a lot and I stand by my team.”

Tunisia will be hoping they have hit form at the right time in this tournament. They scraped through the group stage with three draws and drew again in the last 16, eventually beating Ghana on penalties.

Their win over Madagascar was more encouraging but they face an uphill battle against one of the tournament’s most impressive squads.

If they can spring a surprise, it would be their fourth final. They won their first tournament in 2004 after previous losing appearances in 1965 and 1996.

“Reaching the semi-final is very special because Tunisia didn’t have this privilege for a long time,” said coach Alain Giresse.

“We are very confident and we will fight to beat Senegal.”

De Ligt denies Ronaldo influenced €75m Juventus move

The Dutch defender has completed a big-money switch to the Serie A champions, but insists a Portuguese superstar played no part in his decision

Matthijs de Ligt insists his €75 million (£68m/$84m) move to Juventus was driven by personal ambition, with Cristiano Ronaldo having no influence on his decision to head for Italy.

After seeing his future become the subject of much speculation over recent months, the Netherlands international has finally brought a long-running saga to a close.

The reigning Serie A champions have won the race for his signature, with a highly-rated 19-year-old opting to take on a new challenge in Turin after heading for the exits at Ajax.

Barcelona and Manchester United were among those said to be providing competition to the Bianconeri in a protracted transfer chase, but they were ultimately left empty-handed.

It had been suggested that a chat with Portuguese superstar Ronaldo after the UEFA Nations League final in June helped to sway De Ligt’s thinking, but he insists that is not the case.

“After the Nations League final I was already sure that I wanted to join Juventus, but it was still a big compliment to have Cristiano ask me to join here but it didn’t make the difference,” De Ligt told reporters at his first press conference as a Juve player.

“I came here because Italy is one of the most traditional countries for defenders. Juventus is a great forwards step for me.

“I spoke to [Maurizio] Sarri on the phone before coming just to get to know each other. He was one of the reasons that I wanted to join here, I’ve heard a lot of good things about him and I like his footballing philosophy and how he prepares his defence.

“The photo of me in a Juventus shirt was taken when I was about six or seven, at that time Fabio Cannavaro was a defender that I admired. I always had a good feeling about Juventus and I’ve always been a fan.”

De Ligt is convinced that he has made the right call at this stage of his career, with there a desire on his part to improve his own game in Italy while adding to his collection of major honours.

He said of his ambition: “There are four competitions and we want to win them all. This is the mentality of Juventus.

“It’s a big step, my first outside of my home country. I was really honoured with how the Juventus fans welcomed me and I hope that I can give a lot back.

“I’m still young but I feel like I’ve got a lot of experience for a 19-year-old, that’s why I made this move to gain more experience and to learn from the players here.

“I’m 19, I can still improve and I want to do that. It’s important to work hard every day and to learn and I hope to become a better player.”

De Ligt will be taking the No. 4 shirt at Juventus and is determined to prove himself worthy of it.

He added: “The number four for me has always been special, I wore it since the youth teams of Ajax. It has an important legacy here too at Juventus, so I hope to live up to this number.”

Real Madrid confirm passing of Zidane's brother

His son Luca, a goalkeeper at Madrid now playing on loan at Racing Santander, also left received permission to depart training from his new club after receiving the news.

Golden Boot & Golden Ball winner Rapinoe praises USWNT after 'surreal and ridiculous' World Cup win

The tournament’s top scorer and best player was full of praise for her team-mates after retaining their world title, singling out Rose Lavelle

Megan Rapinoe dubbed her United States teammates “crazy” and “special” after she scored the opening goal in their 2-0 Women’s World Cup final victory over Netherlands.

The 34-year-old Reign FC forward scored a 61st-minute penalty to put Jill Ellis’ side ahead against a resilient Netherlands team before Rose Lavelle lit up the game with a virtuoso goal eight minutes later.

The result helped the USWNT triumph for the fourth time on the biggest stage of the women’s game, while Rapinoe was awarded the Golden Boot, given to the top scorer, and Golden Ball for being the best player.

But the attacker was quick to heap praise on her teammates after their victory, saying there is a “special” bond in the squad.

“I don’t think I can [describe it],” the forward told BBC Sport. “It’s unbelievable. Just to know all the people in our group who put in so much work, obviously the players, we have all our friends and family here.

“It’s surreal. I don’t know how to feel right now. It’s ridiculous. We’re crazy, that’s what makes us special. We’ve got no quit in us, we’re so tight and we’ll do anything to win.”

Lavelle’s goal was her third of the tournament and Rapinoe praised the 24-year-old midfielder’s creativity as being pivotal to USA’s success, while highlighting her performance in the final as her best.

“That was what she’s been missing, just that little bit, all tournament,” said Rapinoe. “She’s been on the dribble, opening up everything for us. For her to get that reward on the biggest stage you possibly can, I’m so proud of her.

“She’s a superstar, not even in the making – she’s a straight-up superstar.”

USA coach Jill Ellis pointed to her players’ “fantastic resilience and chemistry” in her summing up of a moment she admitted left her lost for words.

Ellis previously led the USA to glory in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship and the 2015 World Cup, and she said of her current squad: “They put their hearts and souls into this journey and I can’t thank them enough. It has been fantastic.

“I could barely speak but I just said to them they were unbelievable, congratulations, they made history, enjoy it. This is unbelievable, I’ve got no words.”
