Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan Is Out

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan holds a news conference in June.

Updated at 10:02 p.m. ET

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan is leaving his post, the latest casualty at the department responsible for protecting U.S. borders.

President Trump said in a tweet Friday night that McAleenan had done an “outstanding job” but that he wanted to “spend more time with family and go to the private sector.”

Trump added that he would announce a new acting secretary next week.

During his tenure, McAleenan, a career civil servant, managed to decrease the number of people entering the United States illegally across the southern border. But in an interview with The Washington Post last week, he complained about the “tone, the message, the public face and approach” of the nation’s immigration policy.

The departure continues a purge of leadership at the Department of Homeland Security at Trump’s behest and raises more uncertainty over management at the massive agency created after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Trump supporters praised the decision.

“President Trump is now completely rid of the team that delayed, undermined, and stalled the 2016 election’s mandate,” a hard-line immigration enforcement ally of the administration said. “He has what he’s never had before: competent personnel to carry out his vision on immigration.”

Some are already calling for Trump to move acting Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli into the role.

“The president understands that the opposition seeks to stop his efforts to secure the border and restore control over our nation’s immigration system through court orders and injunctions,” the ally said. “What better force to stop this than the former AG of Virginia and one of the most skilled appellate lawyers in the country?”

Since April, former Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles and acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald Vitiello have resigned.

In June, Trump also accepted the resignation of acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner John Sanders.

Trump elevated McAleenan to serve as acting replacement for Nielsen just days after he said he wanted the administration to go in a “tougher direction” as illegal border crossings had increased.

McAleenan previously served as commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection after having served as acting commissioner since the beginning of the Trump administration.

He was well-liked among Republican and Democratic administrations. In a letter to Congress obtained by ABC News expressing “enthusiastic support” for McAleenan’s nomination to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officials from both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations called McAleenan “supremely qualified.”

But he quickly drew scrutiny from hard-liners close to Trump for his ties to the Obama administration, where he was deputy commissioner of the agency.

McAleenan thanked Trump for the opportunity to serve and said DHS had “made tremendous progress mitigating the border security and humanitarian crisis.”

Gomez desperate to establish himself for England

The Liverpool defender was injured before the World Cup and is now looking forward to having a chance to impress Gareth Southgate

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is desperate to re-establish himself in the England team after missing out on their run to the World Cup semi-finals.

The 20-year-old has won three caps for the Three Lions, playing 65 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Germany before playing the entirety of the encounter against Brazil in another goalless stalemate.

However, he only managed 10 minutes against the Netherlands in his second senior start, as he sustained an ankle injury that led to him being replaced Harry Maguire and eventually ended his hopes of travelling to Russia.

Leicester City defender Maguire, of course, went onto become a key member of Gareth Southgate’s side at the tournament in Russia, even scoring a key goal in the quarter-final win over Sweden.

Gomez says he struggled to watch England during their run to the last four, where they lost to Croatia, but he has now set his sights on playing regularly for his country, after being included in the squad to face Spain in the UEFA Nations League this weekend.

“I had a long period when I was beating myself up, I was replaying it over it in my mind,” he told The Independent.

“I kept thinking I should have done something to stop things going the way they did. It was tough, I won’t lie, seeing the team do so well. As a fan I was buzzing, at the same time, it was tough that I missed out. But it’s done now, I’m over it. Hindsight is a beautiful thing.”

Gomez has made himself a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s defence at Liverpool, playing all four games as the Reds have taken maximum points, conceding just once in the process.

And the youngster is delighted to be playing so regularly at Anfield.

“It was massive for me,” Gomez added.

“And on a personal note, just playing centre-half in the Premier League. Obviously I have said in the past I do hope to move inside one day. I’m happy to play wherever for the team, but to get the opportunity to do it is a personal goal of mine.

“To get the opportunity to play the first game is something I was hoping for.”

'Man City aiming to set a new standard in football' – Sheikh Mansour

The owner of the Premier League giants has cast an eye over his 10-year tenure at the club and still has great ambitions for the future

A decade after Sheikh Mansour took over Manchester City, he has boasted that the Etihad club can become the world’s greatest and set “new standards” in football.

City claimed the Premier League title last season under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola, whose side picked up a record 100 points and were widely praised for the flamboyant style in which they played.

However, the Citizens have yet to win the Champions League, despite a massive investment from their owners, yet the Sheikh remains bullish over what they can achieve in the years to come.

“The journey for City was always about trying to complete our work in a way that saw us achieve benchmarks that had yet to be set within football,” he told the Daily Mail.

“To do that we had to look at everything and make sure that every part of the organisation, and what it did, moved to a new standard for football.

“We’re not there yet but we have come a long way, and I think people who know me well will tell you that if we ever do look like we are getting there, we will set new standards and targets to aim for.”

The reality that Guardiola has put in place, meanwhile, is one that he appreciates greatly.

“It’s beautiful, intelligent and passionate,” he said. “It’s the kind of evolved game that I had hoped we would one day achieve.”

When asked to pick out highlights of his tenure, he picked out an FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester United from 2011 as a critical fixture.

“That was the moment I knew we had arrived at a new level in our climb to where we wanted to be,” he said.

“The team was deliberate in its performance that day. I don’t think I ever felt nervous, simply because the team were playing with the right mentality.”

Meanwhile, he spoke of his memories of City’s dramatic title success in 2012, when they scored twice in the dying seconds to overcome QPR 3-2 at home and whisk the crown away from United, who stood on Sunderland’s pitch ready to celebrate.

“The QPR game for me was exactly as it was for everyone else,” he said. “I don’t think we will ever see anything like that again. My hope was that we would compete for the Premier League every year, so it was a feeling that I knew we had to get used to quickly.”

City have made an unbeaten start to the current campaign but were held against Wolves last weekend. On Saturday, they host Newcastle.

Neymar named permanent Brazil captain

The Paris Saint-Germain star will skipper the Selecao permanently after head coach Tite scrapped his rotation policy

Neymar believes the responsibility of leading Brazil will be good for him after the Paris Saint-Germain star was appointed captain.

Head coach Tite scrapped his captaincy rotation by naming Neymar as Brazil’s permanent skipper on the eve of Friday’s international friendly against the United States in New Jersey.

Neymar endured a turbulent World Cup campaign in Russia, where Brazil made a shock quarter-final exit against Belgium.

The 26-year-old – who scored twice at the showpiece tournament after recovering from a broken foot sustained in February – was a regular target of criticism for his theatrics and behaviour on the pitch, having exaggerated fouls.

Fronting the media alongside Tite after he received the captain’s armband, Neymar told reporters: “I accepted again because I’ve learned a lot and I will learn much more. And this responsibility will be a good thing to me.”

Reflecting on his difficult World Cup campaign, Neymar said: “I think that probably no one here in this room will ever live something close that I’ve lived not even during the Olympics, but after the World Cup as well.

“I was targeted by many critics, a lot of bad things and I wasn’t OK at that very moment [after the game against Belgium] to speak. So when I’m not OK to speak I prefer to stay shut because the silence is the best answer.”

On his critics, Neymar added: “I don’t have much to say about it. I’m a player who takes the ball 11 times and in 10 times I go straight to the opponent.

“I think they won’t let me pass without giving me a little strike. I can’t ask them, ‘Hey, excuse me but let me score’. I suffered lots of fouls during the World Cup. But it happened. It’s another lesson I carry with me.”

“My responsibility is even bigger due to the captaincy but if you don’t play [good] football there’s no need of it,” Neymar continued when asked how he could silence his critics.

“I want to apologise to the supporters which got mad with us because losing is a very bad thing. We believed we could [be world champions] but it wasn’t possible.”

Bayern chief Hoeness slams 'sick and stupid' Bellarabi after Rafinha 'assault'

The Bayer Leverkusen star’s reckless challenge during a Bundesliga clash on Saturday has sparked calls for him to be given a lengthy suspension

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has slammed Karim Bellarabi for a “sick and stupid” foul on Rafinha, claiming that the Bayer Leverkusen man should receive a lengthy ban.

Bellarabi – a second-half substitute during Leverkusen’s 3-1 defeat at Allianz Arena – was on the pitch just seven minutes before he lunged in on Bayern’s full-back, rightly receiving a straight red card.

Rafinha had to be helped from the field by Bayern’s medical staff, and although Niko Kovac was unsure as to the extent of the injury, Hoeness did not hold back in his criticism of the Germany international.

“Bellarabi’s foul was sick and stupid,” Hoeness said. “That was an assault. He should be suspended for three months.”

Bayern had suffered another injury blow earlier in the game – Corentin Tolisso, who netted a 10th-minute equaliser to cancel out Wendell’s early penalty, having gone off with a knee injury, and Hoeness fears that the France midfielder may be facing a long lay off.

“It looks so bad. I think it’s the cruciate ligament,” Hoeness added.

Despite the injuries, Bayern made relatively light work of Leverkusen, who took the lead when Wendell converted from the spot in the fifth minute – Manuel Neuer having pulled off a brilliant double-save to deny Kevin Volland from the initial penalty, only for referee Tobias Welz to order a retake for encroachment.

But Tolisso’s well-taken effort soon had Bayern on level terms, with Arjen Robben putting them ahead nine minutes later with a stunning volley.

James Rodriguez would add further gloss to the victory late on, and Kovac – whose attentions will now switch to Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Benfica – was satisfied by his side’s confident performance.

“I would like to congratulate my team. We recovered from the early goal very quickly,” Kovac said.

“I would have liked us to score the third a lot earlier, but overall I’m very happy.”

David Quinn makes rough Rangers penalty-killing comparison

Unless the coach is referring to Mika Zibanejad or Alexandar Georgiev, you don’t really want David Quinn to compare something in the early going to what happened last year.

Unfortunately, when Quinn on Monday made a reference to “for long stretches we looked like last year,” he was talking about penalty killing in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Vancouver in which the Canucks went 1-for-3 after the Caps went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage in D.C. on Friday.

That followed the strong work through the first four games in which the penalty-kill units yielded three goals while shorthanded 19 times. Overall, the Blueshirts were ranked 18th in the NHL with a .769 kill percentage after placing 27th a year ago at .782.

“We’ve gotten away from what we did during training camp and the first four games,” said Quinn, whose team will attempt to break its four-game losing streak at MSG on Tuesday against the Coyotes. “We were strong in our decisions, we trusted each other, we were pressuring pucks at the appropriate times.

Rick Nash set up shop here, and over the last…

“We had a lot of good things going on with our penalty kill and we’ve gotten away from them. Sometimes that happens in the course of a game. The Washington game, I thought it was the mental approach, maybe we were a little bit intimidated by our opponent. [Sunday] on our first penalty kill, we just didn’t attack, we were sitting back and looked for long stretches like we did last year.”

Ouch.

Quinn — or Lindy Ruff, the assistant coach in charge of the penalty-kill unit, has primarily used four defensemen and five forwards as follows, with minutes played and goals yielded:

On defense: Jacob Trouba (22:49, 5); Brady Skjei (20:21, 2); Brendan Smith (20:01, 1); Marc Staal (19:16, 4). Up-front: Jesper Fast (17:55, 4); Mika Zibanejad (17:25, 3); Brett Howden (15:45, 3); Lias Andersson (13:55, 2); Ryan Strome (10:51, 0). (Thanks, Natural Stat Trick)

Chris Kreider, whose speed and doggedness created a half-dozen chances while on the right the last two games with Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin, will move back to his natural left on a unit with Brett Howden in the middle and Kaapo Kakko on the right. That unit was intact, and was on for 5:57, against the Devils last Thursday.

“I’m hoping [those two games] got him on track,” the coach said of the winger, who has not yet scored. “I’ve liked his game. It’s frustrating because he had some chances, but the good news is that he’s had some chances. I’d be a lot more worried if he hadn’t had those chances the last two games.

“I think he’s resurfacing.”

The Rangers have been outscored 6-2 during the first period of the last three games, and 3-0 by Vancouver.

“It’s too early to say it’s a trend with our starts,” Quinn said.

Georgiev (1-1/2.56/.928) is scheduled to get the start in nets versus Arizona on Tuesday.

Ugly start dooms Rangers in fourth straight loss

Brock Boeser and Jay Beagle scored late in Vancouver’s three-goal first period and the Canucks held on to beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Sunday.

Bo Horvat also scored and Elias Pettersson had two assists for Vancouver, which bounced back from a 1-0 loss at New Jersey on Saturday to win for the fifth time in six games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 38 shots to win his third straight start after losing his first two.

Jesper Fast had a goal and an assist, and Artemi Panarin also scored for New York, which has lost four straight — including three in four days after playing just three times in the previous 14 days. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 40 saves.

Rangers coach David Quinn shook up his lineup during Friday’s 5-2 loss at Washington, moving Chris Kreider to the top line with Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. Pavel Buchnevich was dropped to the second line, and rookie Kaapo Kakko down to the third. Buchnevich ended up on the fourth line during the second period but was back on the second later in the game.

Down 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Rangers came out aggressive in the third and controlled much of the play while outshooting the Canucks 17-6 in the final period.

Panarin got the Rangers to 3-2 as he got a pass from Fast from behind the net, and quickly put it past Markstrom for his fourth at 5:31.

New York had several flurries of chances at the tying goal, pulling Lundqvist for an extra skater with 1:51 to go, but couldn’t get another one past Markstrom.

The Rangers finished 0 for 3 on the power play to fall to 1 for 17 with the man-advantage over the last four games.

With the Rangers trailing 3-0 after a lackluster first period, Fast got them on the scoreboard late in the second. Standing in front of Markstrom, Fast deflected Jacob Trouba’s hard point shot past the goalie for his second.

After making 17 saves in the first, Lundqvist stopped all 17 shots he faced in the middle period to keep the Canucks at bay.

The Canucks got off to a fast start with three goals in the first period while outshooting the Rangers 20-13. Vancouver scored on the power play, at even strength and short-handed.

Horvat got things started as he took a pass from Pettersson and beat Lundqvist on a power play from the inside edge of the left circle for his second of the season and 100th of his career at 6:01. The Canucks came in with the league’s worst man-advantage and were 0 for 12 the previous two games.

Boeser made it 2-0 with 6:26 left in the opening period as he got a pass from Pettersson between the circles and fired a shot that went off Lundqvist’s glove and in for his second.

Then, with Tyler Myers off for hooking, Beagle brought the puck up the right side and beat Lundqvist on the glove side for his first of the season and fourth career short-handed goal.

‘Baby Shark,’ Drinks And Dancing: Lebanon’s Protests Are Unlike Any Other

Anti-government protesters wave national flags as Lebanese army soldiers form a human barrier in the area of Jal el-Dib in the northern outskirts of the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

Lebanon’s mass street protests resemble other outpourings of anger in places like Chile and Ecuador. But the Lebanese never miss an excuse to party.

Faced with years of war, Lebanese have coped with strife by using satire, humor and lots of dancing. This thawra or revolution, as anti-government protesters in Lebanon call it, is no different. It’s accompanied by clever handwritten signs, profanity-laced chants and even “Baby Shark” singalongs.

For almost a week now, protesters have been demanding better public services, economic reforms and a new government. And many of them have done so while holding a Lebanese flag in one hand and a beer in the other.

Here are the most popular memes and moments of the protests, including a few of our personal favorites:

“Kilon Ya3ne Kilon”

Graffiti showing the words “Kilon Ya3ne Kilon,” one of the loudest chants being heard in recent days in Lebanon. It means “All of them means all of them!”

One of the loudest chants of the protests has been, “All of them means all of them!” Protesters aren’t singling out any one leader. They’re sick of the same political elite Lebanon has had for years, from the 81-year-old speaker of Parliament — in office for almost three decades — to Prime Minister Saad Hariri, whose billionaire father previously held the post.

Leaders scrambled to offer economic reforms, but protesters say they’re too late, even changing some politicians’ names on Wikipedia to the “All of them” slogan.

A variation of this chant is “All of them means all of them, and Nasrallah is one of them.” Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, is a long-revered figure for fighting Israel, but he has stirred resentment among some, as his group has gained political power in the same government the protesters want to topple.

Protesters are also frustrated with the way Lebanon’s politics are tied up in sectarianism. In a power-sharing system set up in the 1940s, the position of the president must go to a Christian Maronite, while the prime minister post can go only to someone who is Sunni Muslim. The system only exacerbates deep divisions in Lebanon, protesters say, with politicians often pitting religious communities against each other.

“Hela-Hela-Hela-Hela-Ho Gebran Bassil K** Emmo”

Warning: Some viewers may find this video offensive.

YouTube

This chant is crude. And catchy. Literally, it’s a popular Arabic curse referencing one’s mother’s private parts. Idiomatically, it’s an “F-you” to the foreign minister, Gebran Bassil. Old women, young children and feisty teenagers have been singing it, pumping their fists in the air to the tune, which is a mashup of what Arabs chant at soccer games.

Protesters single out Bassil for many reasons. They say he rose to power thanks to his father-in-law, the president. He is also seen as the main figure responsible for one of Lebanon’s biggest woes, its crippled electricity sector. Most cities experience daily power cuts, and many Lebanese pay regular bills for generators in addition to their monthly electric bills.

“He’s been making so many promises about delivering electricity 24/7 … and he blames others for his failures,” said Mohanad Hage Ali, a political analyst at Carnegie Middle East Center.

Instead of improving the power grid, Bassil was behind the commissioning of Turkish power stations on ships parked offshore to supply Lebanon with electricity, costing hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

It’s “the major black hole in the government’s budget in the past decade,” Hage Ali said.

Bassil has also riled some protesters for blaming the country’s problems on the Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

“Baby Shark”

Cursing aside, there have been some kid-friendly moments. Driving through a crowd of protesters on a recent night, a woman named Eliane Jabbour asked them to quiet down while her toddler slept in the front seat, as Reuters reports.

Instead of shouting their usual slogans, protesters switched to a rendition of the YouTube earworm “Baby Shark.”

Jabbour’s cellphone video of the incident has swept the Internet — and now “Baby Shark” has become another anthem sung at the large demonstrations.

LGBT pride and “Loute”

Graffiti on a wall in Beirut reads, “Love is no crime, love is noble #LGBT.” The city has been known as a gay-friendly haven — but this year’s pride parade was canceled over security concerns.

Young protesters are also calling for LGBT rights in Lebanon, with rainbow flags spotted in the crowds and graffiti on buildings from “Proud and Gay” to “Love is no crime, love is noble #LGBT.”

Beirut is considered an LGBT capital of the Arab world, with gay-friendly bars and drag shows. But Lebanese law still considers gay sex a crime with a prison sentence of up to a year, and authorities have prosecuted Lebanese LGBT people in the past. This year, organizers canceled the opening event of Beirut’s LGBT pride festival amid reported threats from religious groups.

Then there’s the derogatory anti-gay term loute, as the Arabic word is pronounced in Lebanese dialect. Other protesters have chanted against politicians, calling them “Louti,” meaning “sodomite.” It references the Quranic and biblical character Lot from sinful Sodom.

Embracing U.S. pop culture

One of our favorite signs from the protests is a play on “Baby Got Back,” the 1992 rap song by Sir Mix-a-Lot that was an ode to the large derriere.

The sign reads: “You ain’t got none unless you got funds hun,” replacing the original “buns” with “funds.”

“You ain’t got none unless you got funds hun,” reads a young protester’s sign in Beirut. Graphic designer Stephanie Shlelah, who made the sign, says Lebanon’s money is “disappearing into bank accounts somewhere in the world that we don’t know about.”

The sign, created by graphic designer Stephanie Shlelah, is about the failing state of the Lebanese economy. The country is strapped for cash and has one of the world’s highest debt burdens. Banks have reached out to Lebanese moguls abroad to ask for U.S. dollars, hoping to lure them with high interest rates the country cannot afford in the long run. Protesters also say politicians have pocketed kickbacks for years.

“We have fundings but they are disappearing into bank accounts somewhere in the world that we don’t know about,” Shlelah said. “So the funds need to stay in the country, go into health care, into education, into retirement plans for the people and not into bank accounts into specific people in power.”

Other signs we spotted in the streets reference American TV shows, from a cartoon of Homer Simpson taunting Lebanese politicians to a one-word sign with the name of a Game of Thrones villain. And a message to the prime minister draws on RuPaul’s Drag Race to give a direct order: “Sashay Away.”

Free hugs

Mahmoud Aswany holds a sign in Beirut that reads, “Hurry up free hugs” — a dig at the government’s attempts to raise revenue from taxes.

And we’d like to end with a man we’re deeming the winner for the week. We spotted him in the street, holding a sign that reads, “Hurry up free hugs.”

Mahmoud Aswany jokes that the government will even place a tax on hugs if the Lebanese people don’t keep protesting. The protests first started when the government tried to tax calls on the free service WhatsApp.

So, how many hugs has Aswany given away on Beirut’s main protest street? “Countless,” he said.

Alderweireld 'not disappointed' about Man Utd transfer collapse

The Belgium defender says he did not push to leave Tottenham despite being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer

Toby Alderweireld was not disappointed to stay at Tottenham, with the Belgium centre-back a reported target for Manchester United in the previous transfer window.

Alderweireld featured in 14 Premier League games in 2017-18, with the defender’s action restricted by injury and seemingly falling out of favour under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

But despite being in the last year of his Tottenham contract the Belgium international has been reintegrated into the team this term, making three league starts including one in Spurs’ eye-catching 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

United were said to be among the clubs interested in signing Alderweireld but the 29-year-old denies pushing for a move, with Pochettino having given the media a lengthy update on the player’s future last month.

“I quickly came to understand, together with my advisors, that I would be staying put at Tottenham,” Alderweireld said. “However, I can’t talk about all that was said in a news conference [by Pochettino].

“It is even a personal triumph for me to have got my place back in their team. I worked hard for it. It is not a disappointment for me that I did not get a transfer. I did not want to leave at all costs.

“People said that I wanted to leave the club, but that was not true. Not everything that has been said in the media has been correct. I just try to help Tottenham as I can with the abilities I have.

“The World Cup was good for me. I worked hard and showed what I can do. I’m now on cloud nine with the birth of my daughter, Ayla, and I’m always glad to play for Belgium. So I am happy on all levels.”

Alderweireld and Belgium open their Nations League campaign against Iceland on Tuesday, Roberto Martinez’s side having thumped Scotland 4-0 in a friendly last week.

Despite their impressive start to the season, which included the notable individual performances of players such as Jorginho and Eden Hazard, Sarri has been keen to dampen expectations at Stamford Bridge.

“At the moment, I can only see [Man] City or Liverpool [winning the league], at the moment,” Sarri told a media conference .

“We need another step to be at the same level. I think [it is too soon], but I hope not!”

However, while the former Napoli boss has been playing down his side’s chances of challenging for glory, Chelsea will certainly be at the top end of the table come the end of the season if they maintain the standard.

Sarri will have one eye on the Europa League clash with PAOK next week and after that the fixtures become steadily more intense, with four games in the space of 10 days, including two encounters with Liverpool.
