Sebastian Vettel says Formula 1 should return to using only the traditional checkered flag to signal the end of a race rather than rely on an electronic system as the one that failed at Suzuka.

A timing error at the end of last Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix displayed the checkered flag on the light panel at the finish line on the penultimate lap of the 53-lap race.

The premature end to the race confused teams and drivers and prompted an inquiry by the FIA.

F1 implemented the electronic timing system after last year’s Canadian Grand Prix, when super model Winnie Harlow was entrusted with waving the checkered flag but was advised to do so two laps earlier than scheduled!

But after Sunday’s gaffe, Vettel believes F1 should rely only on the manual wave of the symbolic checkered flag rather than both systems as is currently the case.

“I don’t know what happened, obviously someone was a bit eager and went a bit early. So I wasn’t the only one today that was eager and pushed and went a bit early,” joked the Ferrari driver, referring to his jump-start earlier in the day.

“I think from a driver’s point of view it’s very clear that there was no checkered flag,” he added.

“We have a pit board giving us the race information on the laps, we can see on the dashboard as well how many laps are still to go.

“I still saw there was a lap to go, and I got the call by radio that it is the last lap.

“Obviously there was a confusion at the pit wall because I think it was more the timing that set the checkered flag, not the actual checkered flag on the track.

“We had an issue in Canada one year where the checkered flag came too early and now as I understand it the timing is more is the decisive one,” Vettel said.

“Whereas I think it should still be the checkered flag as well. So if you get one of the two wrong, it doesn’t matter which one. I think for us drivers it matters that if we see the checkered flag the race shouldn’t continue.”

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto said the Scuderia’s pitwall was also caught off-guard by the glitch. In doubt, the team ordered its driver to continue their charge.

“I think when you’ve got the checkered flag, we told the drivers to continue pushing, they were pushing and it didn’t affect at least what we were doing,” commented Binotto.

“Something to review on the sporting side with the FIA on how to improve in the future.”

Le premier long métrage des frères Joe et Anthony Russo n’est jamais sorti nulle part. Intitulé “Pieces”, il avait pourtant été sélectionné en festival en 1997, mais pourquoi est-il invisible aujourd’hui ?

Loin des effets spéciaux des films Avengers, le premier long métrage des frères Russo s’intitulait Pieces et il n’est jamais sorti. Nulle part. A l’heure où les deux réalisateurs sortent un blockbuster qui va rivaliser avec les meilleurs scores de l’Histoire du box-office, retour sur les raisons pour lesquelles ce premier long métrage est toujours invisible aujourd’hui.

1997. Tout commence à Slamdance, festival du film indépendant de Los Angeles. Joe et Anthony Russo, alors âgés de 27 et 26 ans respectivement, présentent leur premier long métrage. Ils auto-produisent ce projet en s’endettant, utilisant leur prêt étudiant et diverses cartes de crédit pour le financer. Pieces raconte la façon dont des flics et des voyous harcèlent trois frères pour faire de leur clinique prothésiste une couverture pour des activités illégales.

Avec le recul, Joe Russo décrit le ton du film comme “un thriller violent, intense, avec quelques touches d’humour sarcastique. Disons que l’atmosphère étrange et teintée d’humour noir se rapprochait de celle des films des frères Cohen, pour lesquels nous avons énormément d’admiration”.

Malheureusement, Pieces ne sortira ni en salle ni même en vidéo puisque le film indépendant est mis en musique par de nombreux morceaux dont les cinéastes n’ont pas payé les droits. Anthony Russo confie : “Comme tout le montage du film était calé sur cette ambiance sonore, il n’était pas question de remplacer ces chansons par d’autres. Du coup, le film n’a pas pu sortir en DVD non plus. Si nous le diffusons un jour, ce sera gratuitement, via YouTube !”

A Slamdance, le réalisateur Steven Soderbergh voit Pieces et décide de produire leur film suivant, mais là encore, les deux frères seront déçus : “Nous avions vu trop grand [pour ce deuxième projet] se souvient Joe Russo, “et comme nous n’avions tourné qu’un tout petit film indépendant auparavant, nous n’avons pas réussi à convaincre un studio de nous confier un gros budget pour faire aboutir cette fresque qui s’étalait sur deux décennies. Du coup, nous avons investi nos efforts sur notre autre projet en réserve, Bienvenue à Collinwood”.

Dix ans s’écoulent, pendant lesquels ils mettent en scène Toi et moi et Duprée, quelques téléfilms et des épisodes d’Arrested development. A partir de 2009, les Russo signent 21 épisodes de la série comique Community. C’est pour cette série très influencée par la culture pop que le producteur Kevin Feige les repère. Il apprécie leur travail sur le show et leur excellente connaissance des comics. En 2012, il décide de leur confier les clés de Captain America: le soldat de l’hiver, qui marquera le premier de leurs quatre films Marvel de 2014 à 2019, jusqu’à Avengers: Endgame, actuellement en salles.

Whenever planets are discovered, they are usually named with the help of the different combination of alphabets and numbers.

Ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, Kimi Raikkonen remembers his classic 2007 victory in Shanghai, which paved the way to him winning the world title with Ferrari.

With two races to go in that year’s F1 championship, the Finn arrived in China 17 points adrift of series leader and rookie phenom Lewis Hamilton. The McLaren ace duly claimed pole position, with Raikkonen lining up alongside him on the front row.

Rain swept across Shanghai International Circuit on race day and the Ferrari driver initially ran in second place with Hamilton pulling away in front. But as the grand prix unfolded, weather conditions started to improve and the Briton began to struggle with excessive tyre wear on a drying track.

Having stayed out too long, Hamilton just barely managed to limp back to the pits only to beach his McLaren in a gravel trap by failing to take properly the left-hand corner located on entry.

“There were tricky conditions, it was wet to start with and then the track was drying up, so obviously there was a point to change the intermediates tires and then we got a ride,” Raikkonen reminisces. “Obviously not the easiest race to anybody, but we came out quite easily.”

After inheriting the lead, the unflappable Finn stayed the course to pick his sixth victory of the season and slash the gap to Hamilton to seven points (the 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points scheme for the top eight drivers was still in place at that time).

Two weeks later, Raikkonen would win the Brazilian Grand Prix in another rollercoaster of emotions to become the 2007 world champion, the most recent from Maranello.
