Rowers & Royals To Start The 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon

Runners in the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon will be given a Royal send-off on Sunday 23 April when The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will be the event’s official race starters, along with double Olympic rowing gold medallists Helen Glover and Heather Stanning.

Their Royal Highnesses are spearheading the Heads Together campaign to end stigma and change the conversation on mental health for everyone. They have pledged to make this year’s race ‘the mental health marathon’ and are encouraging runners, whatever great cause they are supporting, to wear the blue Heads Together headband that will be given to them when they collect their race number.

The three Royals will push a giant button at exactly 10:00 to send 35 elite men and more than 39,000 mass race runners on their 26.2-mile journey from Shooters Hill in south east London to Westminster.

Earlier, Glover and Stanning, who won the women’s coxless pairs gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016, will start the seven World Para Athletics Marathon World Cup races for wheelchair and ambulant athletes, and the elite women’s race featuring many of the best marathon runners in the world.

Glover and Stanning will then step down from the Start podium and join the mass field on the run from Blackheath to The Mall. The pair are aiming to raise as much money as possible for their respective charities and to beat each other to the Finish Line. Stanning is raising funds for the Royal British Legion and Glover for the Brain and Spine Foundation.

Among the elite athletes who will be racing away ahead of them will be Ethiopian distance running legend Kenenisa Bekele, two-time world champion Abel Kirui, two-time London Marathon women’s champion Mary Keitany, and the current men’s and women’s world champions, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Mare Dibaba.

Meanwhile, 43-year-old supermum Jo Pavey is just one of 19 of the best British distance runners in the country who will be vying for a handful of coveted places on the nation’s marathon team for this summer’s World Athletics Championships in London.

There will also be more than 70 para-athletes competing in the fourth World Para Athletics Marathon World Cup, including reigning wheelchair champion Marcel Hug and Boston Marathon winner Manuela Schär, plus Britain’s six-times Paralympic champion David Weir who’s going for a record seventh London Marathon victory.

The elites will be followed by thousands of club athletes, fun runners, charity fundraisers, celebrities, politicians and fancy dress costume wearers, including four-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington, TV presenters Sophie Raworth, Mark Chapman and Jenni Falconer, EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt, and all three members of the indie-pop outfit Scouting for Girls.

Rattlesnakes, Brambles and Axes: Pennsylvania’s Eastern States 100

Will a new race in the wilderness of Pennsylvania be the next Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run? The two-year-old Eastern States 100—the East Coast’s answer to the popular ultra in Squaw Valley, California—has already experienced fast success in one of the country’s trail-running hotbeds.

“A few race directors and I had been throwing around the idea for years, but we couldn’t decide on which trails to use,” says Craig Fleming, the Eastern States race director, who has over 10 years of experience directing ultras. “Then co-founder Denny Colegrove came forward with a course plan that incorporated some of the best trails Pennsylvania has to offer. To everyone’s surprise, I had already purchased the domain name for Eastern States a few years back—so the Eastern States 100 was born.”

The 100-mile course—a single loop, 95 percent of it singletrack—travels through the Wilds of Pennsylvania, one of the state’s most remote wildernesses. The ups and downs are relentless—the total vertical gain is over 20,000 feet—and switchbacks are scarce.

“There are no sections that let a runner relax and zone out,” says Fleming. “One minute you’re running through an open hardwood forest, and the next you’re in a tunnel of mountain laurel and rhododendron. Vistas are spectacular on the ridge tops, and stream crossings are around every turn in the deep hollows.”

The event has quickly gained popularity since its inaugural race in 2014. The nearby town of Waterville, population 295, has embraced the race; locals welcome runners, volunteer at aid stations and help with trail maintenance.

“What is special or unique about the course—besides the rattlesnake den in the last few miles?” asks Michael Wardian, an elite ultrarunner who won the 2015 event. “The climbs are pretty epic—you wouldn’t think to find so much vertical in Pennsylvania. Also, I love the award for winning—an axe. For chopping wood! How cool is that?”

Eastern States recently earned its status as a qualifier for Western States. Now, its race directors are setting their sights on making Eastern States a qualifier for the Hardrock 100 and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, as well as a “must-do” ultramarathon on the East Coast.

“I would love to see more athletes from around the country and world come to Eastern States and challenge themselves on one of the toughest and most well-done 100-milers that I have run,” says Wardian.

Sport is racist: the 19th leg of French League overshadowed by racist episodes

The article you are about to read is the pure expression of personal observation based on facts and reactions definitely not worth mentioning especially in the century we are living, a century when society pretends to have improved, a society that is proud to declare it has diminished the racism rates, a society that stands up for values such as unconditional love, acceptance and equity.

Regrettably, the last leg of French league witnessed a couple of let’s call them unfortunate events prone to contradict and raise a question mark over all the progress we have yet done. Myriam Kloster herself, the international middle blocker and captain of Le Cannet, shared her regrets to such attitude and reactions after the game played last Saturday in Terville (Moselle). Her comments were resentful; the player expressed her disappointment towards the local supporters and the home team’s organization staff who could not or, better said, did not even try to stop or bring to account the persons responsible for such behavior. The player was heavily beset by racist comments during the game and though she informed the referees, measures refused to be taken. The club of Le Cannet forwarded their complaint to the French Volleyball League (LNV) as well as to the club of Terville who were not able to identify the supporters with inappropriate behavior, but submitted their official apologies.

Another game shadowed by such racist attitude took place in Mulhouse where the home team received Nantes VB. Guest team player, Sherri Williams, received a couple of racist insults; in fact, the entire team was ‘welcomed’ with hostile attitude. It is worth mentioning also a less promoted event alike which took place the previous season during a game between two men teams (League B): Orange Nassau and St. Pierre Calais Volleyball. One of the players of Calais was brutally insulted by supporters, including the president of home club. The French Federation took then the decision to suspend the player for three games and to ban the president from sporthalls for the rest of the season.

There are beautiful, tight score games worth remembering for team’s performances, but instead they are shadowed by such hooligan attitudes. Sporthalls are supposed to promote fair play, competitive spirit and such unfortunate events do not bring pride, nor good publicity to sport, whatsoever.

The French Team Invited to the World Grand Champions Cup

The French men’s team will compete for the first time in its history at the World Grand Champions Cup in September 2017 in Japan.

The World Grand Champions Cup, organised every four years and bringing together six nations, will see the French team celebrate its first participation in 2017 (from 12 to 17 September). “It’s a great reward,” said Eric Tanguy, president of the French Volleyball Federation (FFVB). There will be very high level and this will be the opportunity for our French team to take a little revenge on the Olympic Games and to show that it continues to stay at the highest international level in a country, Japan, where it is much appreciated. ”

According to Ladbrokes this seventh edition will feature champions from four continents: Europe (France), North America (USA), South America (Brazil) and Asia (Iran), as well as the country -Host (Japan) and a guest (Italy). Brazil, the triple champion, is the undisputed master of this competition, and will once again be a favourite, notably thanks to his Olympic title won in August in Rio.

Iran Mad at the US for ‘detaining’ Its Volleyball Team at the Airport

No one likes to be kept waiting, that’s for sure, but in spite of this, it still happens. It’s the same for the Iranian volleyball team, who declared that the US had “detained” them for hours at a U.S. Chicago airport. Tensions between the two countries were already existent, but now that this incident has occurred, they may rise even higher.

What Exactly Happened?

On Monday, Iran had to file a diplomatic protest against the US under the reason that their male volleyball team has been kept waiting in the Chicago airport for hours. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, four hours were wasted during which the team members were interrogated, not long after they landed.

“If American cannot host all the teams fairly and neutrally, its better stop hosting sports events,” said Mohsen Baharvand, Iranian foreign ministry for US affairs. The ministry has filed this complaint to Tehran through the Swiss ambassador.

FIVB, the International Volleyball Federation, has also declared in a statement that it wasn’t unaware of the issues the volleyball team has encountered and was concerned. Apparently, not every one of the Iranian delegations has been held in the airport for 4-hour worth of interrogation, but those who were detained were truly not pleased about it.

Is It Only Really About Volleyball?

Recently, there had been some tension increasing between Iran and the US. Given Tehran was increasing uranium enrichment, President Donald Trump has re-introduced economic sanctions in 2018 after he has withdrawn from a 2015 nuclear deal. Apparently, it was announced last month that the White House will cancel sanction waivers on eight countries that will keep buying Iranian oil. Therefore, the relationship between the two countries was already shaky as it was.

Furthermore, threats were also there, which is why there was an increase in military presence in the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. There were apparent warnings about possible attacks on American interest and Positions from Iran.

“This is politics. I don’t know why they did it. Do our athletes have anything else to do but play sports? Their approach is not logical” declared Iran’s Volleyball Federation president.

The team is going to play against Poland on Thursday and Brazil on Friday. We can only hope the tensions will not rise higher. All we can do in the meantime is support the teams and bet on volleyball.
