Chicago police release bodycam footage of fatal shooting that sparked a weekend of mass protests

A man killed by Chicago police had a gun in a holster at his hip and was shot multiple times as he ran away, spun around and reached toward his waist, footage released Sunday from an officer’s body-worn camera shows.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said it’s the quickest he has ever ordered such footage released and that he hoped to dispel rumors that Harith Augustus, 37, was unarmed. He also hoped that making the 30-second clip public would prevent another violent confrontation between residents and officers.

Protesters angry about the killing took to the streets Saturday in a city that’s struggled with police shootings, especially against black men and other minorities. Some threw rocks and bottles at officers – including ones filled with urine – and police pulled people to the ground and hit them with batons.

"The community needs some answers and they need them now," Johnson told reporters on Sunday. "We can’t have another night like last night."

He said Augustus’ family was in favour of releasing the video for the same reason.

Four protesters were arrested in the clash, and some police officers suffered minor injuries. Two police cars also were damaged.

A protest and march Sunday after the video’s release was calmer, with some demonstrators holding a moment of silence for Augustus, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

It’s not fully clear why officers initially approached Augustus. On Saturday, patrol chief Fred Waller said officers patrolling on foot tried to question Augustus over a "bulge around his waistband" that suggested he was armed.

The video, which lacks sound, shows four officers approaching Augustus on Saturday outside a shop on the city’s South Side. An officer points to Augustus’ waist and he backs away. Three officers try to grab his arms and he tries to get away, backing into a police vehicle as his shirt flies up, showing the gun.

The footage pauses and zooms in on the weapon, which police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi on Sunday said was done to ensure a semi-automatic handgun in its holster and two bullet magazines tucked into Augustus’ waist could be seen clearly.

Augustus then runs away and into the street as a police SUV drives up. He spins and darts between the SUV and the police cruiser as he reaches toward his waist. Augustus did not fire his weapon and the footage does not show him pulling the gun out of its holster.

Police also released a 50-second slow-motion clip showing Augustus reaching toward his waist. It’s not clear if he was going for the weapon. Guglielmi said Augustus, who died of multiple gunshot wounds, appeared to try to grab something at his waist.

Augustus had no recent arrest history, Guglielmi said, without elaborating. He had a valid firearm owners’ identification card but detectives have found no documentation that he had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Johnson said.

Gloria Rainge, who lives in the area, told the Sun-Times that Augustus – known in the Grand Crossing neighborhood as "Snoop" – worked at a barbershop and had a 5-year-old daughter.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson called the shooting a tragedy and said in a statement that it’s a blessing Augustus didn’t have his daughter with him Saturday.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates shootings involving officers, said it was analysing the video and asking anyone who may have captured mobile phone footage to share it with the agency.

It was at least the third time in the last two weeks that a Chicago police officer shot someone.

Chicago has a troubled history of police shootings. The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing a white police officer shoot a black 17-year-old, Laquan McDonald, 16 times a year earlier.

The officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with murder. McDonald’s death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms meant to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable.

Donald Trump thanks Kim Jong-un for returning remains of American soldiers killed in Korean War

Donald Trump on Friday praised the return of "fallen heroes" from North Korea back to the US as he publicly thanked Kim Jong-un for "keeping his word".

An American military plane arrived in South Korea on Friday morning carrying what is believed to be the remains for 55 US servicemen killed during the Korean War.

The handover is a concrete sign the North Korean leader is following through on a commitment he made to the US president during their June meeting in Singapore.

However the number falls short of the 200 set of remains Kim reportedly assured Mr Trump he was willing to return.

The issue had become emblematic of concerns about whether the Pyongyang regime is sincere in its desire to follow through and whether Mr Trump has exaggerated concessions won.

During a press conference at the White House Mr Trump said praised the return  "of some great fallen heroes from America back from the Korean War."

"We have many others coming but I want to thank Chairman Kim in front of the media for fulfilling a promise that he made to me and I’m sure that he will continue to fulfill that promise as they search and search and search," Mr Trump said.

He added: "these incredible American heroes will soon lay at rest on sacred American soil."

The C-17 Globemaster had left the Osan base, some 50 miles south of Seoul, before 6am and flown to Kalma Airport, outside the North Korean city of Wonsan, to collect the remains.

The US president declared at a rally last month that the North had already handed over the remains of 200 “fallen heroes”, although that was quickly denied by the United Nations Command in South Korea.

The US Air Force transport aircraft was flanked by two fighter jets as it completed its flight back to the Osan base, where the remains were handed over to representatives of the Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Officials of the organisation are to conduct an initial examination of the remains before a formal repatriation ceremony is held on August 1, when the remains will be flown to a forensic laboratory in Hawaii to undergo tests in an attempt to identify the men.

Mike Pence, the US Vice President, will join families to welcome the remains back to American soil.

The repatriation of remains could be followed by stronger North Korean demands for fast-tracked discussions to formally end the war, which was stopped with an armistice and not a peace treaty.

Efforts to recover American war dead had been stalled for more than a decade because of a standoff over North Korea’s nuclear program and American fears that security arrangements for its personnel working in the region were insufficient.

Despite soaring rhetoric about denuclearisation immediately following the two leaders’ historic meeting, the North had latterly accused  the Americans of making "gangster-like" demands.

Friday’s good will gesture follows reports last week that the North had begun to dismantle a missile engine test site, in a sign of an intention to improve ties with Washington.

The White House said: “Today’s actions represent a significant first step to recommence the repatriation of remains from North Korea and to resume field operations in North Korea to search for the estimated 5,300 Americans who have not yet returned home."

Officials in North Korea made no comment on the handover on Friday, which coincided with the 65th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that brought the Korean War to an uneasy conclusion.

North Korea used the occasion to repeat its demand that the US and the other nations that made up the United Nations Command sign a peace treaty to formally end the conflict.

An important holiday on the North Korean calendar, flowers were laid before monuments to North Korean and Chinese troops killed in the war and signs were placed in public areas celebrating the North’s “victory” in the three-year conflict.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez Works Out At WWE PC

It was previously reported that Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez was spotted at the recent NXT TV Tapings that took place at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. It was unclear then if Velasquez had any interest in pursuing a career in The WWE. Things may have changed since then and Cain Velasquez may have an interest in pursuing a WWE Career after all as WWE has recently reported that Cain Velasquez has been working out with talents at The Performance Center in Orlando, Florida lately.
You can check out the statement issued by WWE along with social media comments about Velasquez working out at the training facility and a video of Velasquez working out below:
Two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez trains at WWE Performance Center

One of the greatest heavyweights in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship trained alongside NXT Superstars this week at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.
Two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez stepped inside the ring to learn techniques under WWE PC coach Norman Smiley and participated in a session of DDP Yoga led by WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page. Velasquez also worked out in the WWE PC’s weight room and attended last night’s NXT tapings at Full Sail Live.
The 6-foot-1 Velasquez, who sports a 14-2 record inside the Octagon, famously defeated Universal Champion Brock Lesnar as well as Junior Dos Santos to secure his two reigns with the UFC Heavyweight crown.
A product of the acclaimed American Kickboxing Academy, Velasquez holds an astonishing number of records among the UFC Heavyweight ranks, including the most knockouts and the highest significant strike percentage in the history of the heavyweight division.

The UFC icon, a lifelong fan of WWE and Mexican lucha libre, praised the athletes and atmosphere of the Performance Center.
“My experience here has been amazing,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to being here and learning as much as I can. I’ve been a fan of the sport since I was a little kid, and now I get to participate in it.”
Velasquez, of course, is not the first MMA legend to walk through the doors of the WWE PC, with the likes of NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler training at the Performance Center and Raw Superstar Ronda Rousey having worked out there prior to making her WWE in-ring debut at WrestleMania.

It was an honor to have former @ufc Heavyweight Champion @cainmma in the ring with the @WWENXT Superstars this week at the @WWEPerformCtr! https://t.co/AWu6LLvrSi
