Felix Tshiskedi sworn in as DR Congo president amid suspicions he is Kabila plant

Felix Tshisekedi, accused of taking power through subterfuge and electoral fraud, was sworn in as president of Congo on Thursday at a ceremony plagued by mishap and boycotted by most African leaders.

What should have been a historic moment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo turned farcical after the new leader was overtaken by a bout of apparent illness, briefly abandoning his inauguration speech just as he was savouring his triumph.

Mr Tshisekedi later returned to the podium, blaming a “moment of weakness”. Aides blamed an overly tight bullet-proof vest, but, in a superstitious land haunted by decades of internecine violence, many will see an ill-omen that reflects the controversy surrounding his improbable ascent to office.

Behind him on the dais brooded the inscrutable figure, hidden behind mirrored sunglasses, of Joseph Kabila, the former president accused of finagling the election to ensure a pliant and possibly temporary successor.

Mr Tshisekedi may be the first person in Congolese history to rise to the presidency from opposition ranks, but, if Catholic observers and leaked data from the electoral commission are to be believed, he won less than a fifth of the vote. His rival in the opposition, Martin Fayulu, won nearly 60 percent, the same data showed.

Western powers and even the African Union condemned the vote amid suspicions that Mr Tshisekedi had cut a secret power-sharing deal with his predecessor.

Yet with the Congolese people apparently acquiescing in the election, perhaps for fear of tipping their fragile state into renewed violence, outsiders have backed down. They pointedly stayed away from the inauguration, though; of 14 African leaders invited, only Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, who won controversially won re-election in 2017, turned up.

Eager to emphasise the dawn of a new era, Mr Tshisekedi pledged to release political prisoners and struck a conciliatory note in his address.

“We want to build a strong Congo turned towards its development and security,” he said. “A Congo for all, in which everyone has a place.”

The future of Central Africa’s troubled giant, plagued by a legacy of brutal civil war, continued insecurity and debilitating corruption, will depend on whether Mr Tshisekedi can become his own man. Unable even to appoint his own cabinet after Mr Kabila’s coalition won an overwhelming parliamentary majority, few observers are betting on it.

Conviction of Cardinal George Pell for sex abuse contrasts with woolly words and lack of action from the Vatican

The contrast with the woolly words and waffle of the Vatican’s conference on how to prevent clergy abusing children could hardly have been sharper.

Just two days after the end of the much-heralded summit, which was widely criticised by abuse victims as having achieved very little, an Australian court revealed that Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s third most senior figure, was found guilty of sexually assaulting two choirboys.

Pell is now the most senior Catholic cleric ever to be convicted of child sex crimes.

The case, which dates back to 1996, revolved around accusations that Pell sexually abused and indecently assaulted the two boys, at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne after he caught…

Becky Lynch Trolls Asuka with Star Wars GIF, Threatens Champ

Becky Lynch apparently wants to bring out The Dark Side in SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka as she laid down some Twitter smacktalk in advance of their showdown at the Royal Rumble on January 27th at Chase Bank Field in Phoenix.
Among a series of tweets aimed at the champ, Lynch goaded The Empress of Tomorrow into bringing back “the old Asuka,” urging her to “let the hate flow’ with a Star Wars GIF of the Imperial Emperor and trashing Asuka’s interior decorating skills in her apartment. WWE has not announced any segment or matches featuring Lynch or Asuka as of yet for this week’s show. Lynch also managed to mix in shots at both RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair as well. Here’s a look at the fun exchange between the two:

I’m going to hit you 9% harder just because of your Twitter. https://t.co/EZrYeb1Dd9

And you retweet your own tweets. What’s wrong with you all? #worsethanronnie

#ShoehornCharlotte – she’ll get in anywhere.

The only way Asuka is going to kill me is by boring me to death with pictures of her apartment.
— The Man (@BeckyLynchWWE) January 12, 2019

Why = cause you’re one step away from posting cat pics and this is an intervention.
What am I saying? = I will now hit you 42% harder for your reply
Am I out of my mind? = Obvs not.
