US-backed troops flush Isil from last square mile of territory in Syria

Fierce clashes took place Sunday on the eastern edge of Syria as US-backed troops battled to oust Isil fighters from the last square mile of the group’s once-sprawling so-called caliphate.

Four and a half years into what it calls Operation Inherent Resolve, the US-led coalition against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is closing in on the end of the battle for territory once overrun by jihadists from all over the world.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led group acting as the lead coalition proxy on the ground, announced Saturday a final push to retake the last pocket of jihadists, following a week-long pause in fighting.

The SDF told the Telegraph their forces had been forced to halt as Isil was using civilians as human shields. However, the reported reason was to allow for negotiations between the SDF and Isil, which had been seeking safe passage to other desert areas of Syria in return for the release of dozens of SDF fighters captured in battle several months ago.

Talks collapsed on Friday and on Saturday Isil released a video of the execution of two Arab members of the SDF and ordered sleeper cells across eastern Syria to attack the forces.

The SDF, backed by coalition air power including UK support, has mowed through Isil’s former territory, moving south through Deir Ezzor province to a one square mile wedge of territory bordered by the Iraqi border to the east and the Euphrates river to the west.

The SDF pushed towards the village of Baghuz on Sunday, backed by coalition airstrikes and artillery fire. Up to 600 jihadists could remain inside the area, including many foreign fighters, said Mustafa Bali, SDF spokesman.

"Our forces are relying on direct combat with light weapons," Mr Bali said. He added that his men had captured 41 jihadist positions before the day’s end.

On the Iraqi side of the border, French troops were poised to attack, lest any jihadists try to escape across the border they once bulldozed through with ease.

Coalition deputy commander Christopher Ghika last week said Iraqi forces had sealed their border with Syria.

Since September, when the SDF moved into the third phase of what military planners call Operation Roundup, more than 1,270 Isil militants, more than 670 SDF fighters, and around 400 civilians have been killed in the fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

But even as the physical ground held by the jihadists shrinks, the terror group maintains a network of cells and supporters that spans the globe. The presence of hundreds of foreign fighters and their wives and children raises difficult questions about the group’s legacy and the willingness of other countries to tackle it head-on.

Academy backtracks on plans to present four Oscars in ad breaks after outcry from stars

The organisers of the Oscars have been forced to rescind a plan to present four awards during commercial breaks, after it was derided by Hollywood heavyweights as an insult to the cinematic arts.

Triggering a backlash that threatened to overshadow the already-troubled awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had earlier this week announced that the awards for cinematography, film editing, makeup and hairstyling and live-action short would be cut from the live broadcast.

Instead, they would be presented during ad breaks and the winning speeches aired in a shortened, taped segment, the Academy said.

The move drew opprobium from a host of this year’s nominees, including including "Roma" director Alfonso Cuaron and "BlacKkKlansman" filmmaker Spike Lee, along with other stars and industry figures.

The American Society of Cinematographers on Wednesday issued an open-letter signed by more than 300 top industry figures including Martin Scorsese, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro, in which they excoriated the academy for betraying its artistic principles.

"When the recognition of those responsible for the creation of outstanding cinema is being diminished by the very institution whose purpose it is to protect it, then we are no longer upholding the spirit of the academy’s promise to celebrate film as a collaborative art form," the letter read.

It accused the Academy of "relegating these essential crafts to lesser status" and insulting the professionals who work in the four areas.

After a hasty meeting with the cinematographers union on Thursday, the Academy released a statement the following day announcing the climbdown.

It had "heard the feedback" from members and all 24 Academy Awards "will be presented without edits, in our traditional format," it said.

"Nine days until the showtime, still tweaking the script", the Academy said in a tweet.

Organisers had earlier defended the plan, which was aimed at trimming the broadcast to a pacier three hours following record-low ratings last year.

It is unclear whether the reversal will mean extending the show’s length again.

But it is just the latest furore unleashed by the Academy’s attempt to update the Oscars format.

Last summer the introduction of a "popular film Oscar" provoked such an uproar – actor Rob Lowe pronouncing the industry dead "survived by sequels, tent-poles and vertical integration" – that it dropped the idea within weeks.

The Oscars will have no host this year for only the fifth time in its nine-decade history, after Kevin Hart was announced only to immediately become embroiled in a row over his old homophobic tweets. Hart initially refused to apologise, though later did as he resigned from the role.

Another plan to limit the performances by the best song nominees was also reversed.

Lois Burwell, a veteran make-up artist on the Academy’s board of governors, described the efforts to tweak the Oscars as an "evolving process."

"With anything creative, you start in one place and then there’s the journey to where you end up," she said.

Cooling in Semifinals as Three Mavericks Advance to Day Two of NCAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Mavericks advanced to day two of the NCAA Championships Friday. Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) advanced to the semifinals while Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) and Matthew Blome (Fr., 197 lbs.) also will move on to the second day of wrestling.

Cooling finished the first day of the competition with a perfect 2-0 record. He defeated Bruno Nicoletti (Colorado Mesa) for the second time this season in the first round of the NCAA Championships. A 3-2 decision over Nicoletti would be enough to earn Cooling a trip to the quarterfinals. There Cooling would take the mat against Bradley Metz (Findlay). Cooling won the match by a 4-2 decision and advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year.

Abernathy began his tournament with a fall over Nathan Bowlen (Seton Hill) in 5:39 to advance to the quarterfinals. There Abernathy lost a narrow 7-8 decision to Jordan Murphy (Ashland), landing him in the consolation bracket. In his third match of the day Abernathy won a 12-2 major decision against Tyler Hughes (Lake Erie) to finish with a 2-1 record and advance to the second day of the NCAA Championships.

Blome advanced to day two of the NCAA Championships after finishing 2-1 Friday. Blome lost his first match to Luke Cramer (Ashland) by an 11-3 major decision. In the consolation bracket Blome was tied 6-6 in the third period against Terrance Fanning (Wheeling Jesuit) where he was able to turn Fanning for a pin in 5:56. Blome continued his pin streak in his second win of the day against Evan Rosborough (Lake Erie), winning by fall in 0:50.

Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) finished with 0-2 record Friday to conclude his season. In his first match at the NCAA Championships, Herman lost to top seeded Cody Law (Pitt- Johnstown) by a 17-4 major decision. Herman dropped an 11-1 major decision against Bryan Dutton (Central Oklahoma) in the consolation bracket in his second match. Herman finished his junior year with a 19-12 record and 13 pins for Minnesota State.

Wrestling will resume Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., with semifinal and consolation bracket matches. The finals will take place Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.

Backstage News on AJ Styles’ WWE Contract Expiring Soon

According to people very close to the situation, the strong expectation is that AJ Styles is staying with WWE when his contract expires this April, according to Dave Meltzer on a recent edition of The Wrestling Observer Radio Program.
Meltzer mentioned how it is an incredibly opportunistic time for Styles to have his contract ending because he is good friends with people like All Elite Wrestling Executive Vice Presidents The Young Bucks. Despite that, the situation is that Styles is reportedly staying with WWE.
AJ Styles competed in a match against “The New” Daniel Bryan for The WWE Title at last night’s Royal Rumble PPV Event at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona and lost due to the involvement of Erick Rowan.
