Chinese high-security jail puts AI monitors in every cell ‘to make prison breaks impossible’

A prison that houses some of China’s most high-profile criminals is reportedly installing an artificial intelligence network that will be able to recognise and track every inmate around the clock and alert guards if anything seems out of place.

The “smart jail” system inside Yancheng prison integrates surveillance cameras and hidden sensors that collect data points into a central “brain,” an AI-powered computer that will generate a daily report on inmates using facial recognition and movement analysis.

“If an inmate has been spotted pacing up and down in a room for some time, the machine may regard the phenomenon as suspicious and suggest close-up check with a human guard,” project representative Meng Qingbiao told the South China Morning Post newspaper.

The technology deployed allows each camera to track up to 200 faces at a time, according to Mr Meng.

“So the prisoners might be able to blend in the crowd in a packed corridor, busy canteen, exercise session or even massive brawl, but they will never be able to slip away completely.

Artificial Intelligence is greater concern than climate change or terrorism, says new head of British Science Association

It might even help guards behave better and treat prisoners more uniformly.

For instance, if inmates succeed bribing guards to help them escape, neither will be able to duck away from the surveillance technology, he said about the system, jointly developed by public research institutes including Tianjin University and Tiandy, a surveillance technology firm.

China has been rapidly developing artificial intelligence capabilities and rolling out new technologies for use in city streets to track traffic patterns to schools to monitor students.

In some airports, it’s already possible to board at the gate via facial recognition.

And one tech firm, Watrix, is working on a new “gait recognition” software that identifies people using their silhouettes and how they walk, even if their faces are obscured and their backs are turned.

In the long run, such technology could supplement facial recognition, which relies on high-resolution images of a person’s face to work properly.

Yancheng prison is often referred to as China’s ‘VIP’ prison as it houses some of formerly high ranking officials who have been fallen by a widespread anti-corruption crackdown, and is thought to have relatively more comfortable accommodations.

Veteran New Orleans TV Anchor Dies Covering Story In Stunt Plane

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Nancy Parker, a veteran New Orleans television news anchor, was killed in a plane crash while shooting a story Friday afternoon, according to FOX 8, the television station where she worked.

“Nancy was absolutely a joy to work with each and every day,” FOX 8 Vice President and General Manager Tim Ingram said in a statement. “Today we lost a wonderful journalist and remarkable friend, the New Orleans television community lost a true treasure, but beyond that, her family lost a wife, a mother and daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Parker worked at the television station for 23 years. According to FOX 8, Parker, 53, was shooting a story in a stunt plane with a pilot who was a member of a Louisiana group that honored the Tuskegee Airmen.

The pilot, identified by FOX 8 as Franklin J.P. Augustus, was also killed in the crash. The plane crashed around 3 p.m. near the New Orleans Lakefront Airport, according to city officials.

Ingram said Parker put her “heart and soul” into her work.

“She made a difference in the lives of those she reported on,” the statement from Ingram read. “She will be sorely missed, and her absence creates a void that cannot be filled.”

Many offered condolences after Parker’s death, including New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson and Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards.

“On behalf of my late husband Tom, to the family of WVUE-FOX 8, we offer our deepest sympathy to the tragic loss of Nancy Parker,” Benson said in a statement.

“Nancy was an outstanding, Emmy Award winning news anchor, who fostered great trust with both those who she covered and with her viewers in the New Orleans area. Not only was she a leader in local television, she was a devoted wife to her husband Glynn and mother to their three beautiful children; Parker, Piper, and Pierce. She was a dear friend and a frequent guest at local philanthropic lunches and at our family farm in Kentucky. She will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy’s family.”

WWE Confirms Passing of Hall of Famer Pedro Morales

WWE.com issued the following on Tuesday:
WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Pedro Morales has passed away.

A native of Culebra Island, Puerto Rico, Morales moved to New York in his youth and debuted in the ring in 1959 at age 17. After establishing his reputation as a fiery competitor in WWE on the east coast, Morales traveled west to territories in Texas and California, where he competed for much of the 1960s. In California, he battled The Destroyer in a famous rivalry, and formed a popular tag team with Pepper Gomez.
Morales returned to WWE in 1970, and in less than a year, he captured the WWE Championship from Ivan Koloff inside Madison Square Garden. During his nearly three years on top, Morales developed a passionate following in the northeast, particularly among New York City’s growing Hispanic population. More than 22,000 fans turned out to Shea Stadium in 1972 to watch him battle close friend and former champion Bruno Sammartino in the main event of the inaugural Showdown at Shea supercard. After 75 minutes of action, the bout was ruled a draw in accordance with the state athletic commission’s strict 11 p.m. curfew.

His WWE Championship reign ended at the hands of Stan Stasiak in December 1973, but Morales achieved history again in 1980, winning the World Tag Team Titles with Bob Backlund and, later that year, the Intercontinental Title to become the first “Triple Crown” Champion in WWE history. Morales hung up his boots in 1987 but continued on as an ambassador for sports-entertainment. He later became a commentator for both WCW and WWE’s Spanish announce teams, and in 1995, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

WWE extends its condolences to Morales’ family, friends and fans.
