Indiana mayor considers running for DNC chair: report

The mayor of South Bend, Ind., is considering a run for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Politico reported Wednesday.

Buttigieg was the subject of a New York Times column over the summer that asked whether he would be “the first gay president.”

He would face a crowded field in the DNC race. Rep. Buttigieg demurred when asked if he had national ambitions.

“I’ve been talking with a number of fellow local and state leaders from around the country about the future direction of the Democratic Party,” he reportedly said.

“I am staying focused on South Bend, but I do care deeply about where our country is headed. It’s clear the party needs to connect better with communities like my hometown, where working people are looking for economic fairness and for leadership that focuses on our shared values.”

Buttigieg is a Harvard graduate, a Rhodes Scholar and a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Raw tonight goes against a Dallas Cowboys vs. Arizona Cardinals game. The first week after the draft should do better than usual. Announced thus far are Matt Riddle vs. A.J. Styles, Asuka vs. Lana for the women’s title, Keith Lee vs. Braun Strowman, a Firefly Fun House with Bray Wyatt, the Mustafa Ali interview on why he joined Retribution that was cut from last week’s show and an Elias concert.

We’ll talk more about it tonight, but New Japan is limiting the 11/7 Power Struggle show to six singles matches meaning that a ton of the talent will not be booked on what is traditionally the last major show of the year. This year because the Super Juniors and World Tag League are together, the biggest show for the remainder of the year would be in December at Budokan Hall. But the 1/4 main event spot comes out of Power Struggle with the Tetsuya Naito vs. Evil IWGP championship match winner facing the Kota Ibushi vs. Jay White briefcase winner.

We also have polls open for all three G-1 Climax shows at Sumo Hall, thumbs up, down or middle, best & worst match, plus overall G-1 Climax MVP and best match of the tournament to [email protected]

This week has an interesting situation since AEW & NXT on Wednesday and Smackdown on Friday all go against the World Series, with game two on Wednesday and game three on Friday. Smackdown moves to FS 1, which last year led to a giant audience decline. AEW has the most loaded show of the three with the first round of their world title contenders tournament with Penta El Cero M vs. Rey Fenix, Kenny Omega vs Joey Janela, Colt Cabana vs. Adam Page and Jungle Boy vs. Wardlow plus a four-way for a tag title shot with Young Bucks vs. Private Party vs. Butcher & Blade vs. Alex Reynolds & John Silver. Also on the show is a Britt Baker match and a Chris Jericho/MJF steak dinner segment.

NXT has Tyler Breeze & Fandango vs. Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish for the tag titles.

For a comparison, the same week last year saw Smackdown do 888,000 viewers and 0.27 in 18-49, AEW did 963,000 and 0.45 and NXT did 698,000 and 0.21.

The death of Principe Aereo (Luis Angel Salazar) in a match on Saturday night in Nezahualcoyotl was due to a middle cerebral artery rupture. Salazar collapsed in the ring with no apparent reason as he hadn’t fallen the wrong way or taken a shot wrong. It was very similar to the Oro death a generation ago.

WWE
Ashley Fliehr (Charlotte Flair) has signed a management deal with VaynerSports, the first pro wrestler they have signed. The agency has a lot of big name MMA fighters including Stipe Miocic, Eddie Alvarez, Chris Weidman, Aljamain Sterling and Vitor Belfort.
There is a big issue with sports video game producers because of a conflicting legal situation. Sportico noted that Take Two won a case in Federal Court that their NBA 2K game could replicate player tattoos without paying the tattoo artist. However, in Illinois, a federal judge ruled the opposite in a case involving Randy Orton’s tattoo artist and WWE 2K.
Toni Storm turned 25 today.
Saraya Bevis aka Paige announced today that today marks two years of sobriety. Great for her.

Tecia Torres vs. Angela Hill has been added to the 12/12 PPV show. This is a rematch of a fight five years ago that Torres won.

Anti-Drone Protesters Arrested Outside US Air Force Base

Though mainstream America continues to largely ignore the fact that the Obama administration is routinely killing innocent civilians abroad, a number of individuals and organized groups in the U.S. continue to protest the use of remotely-piloted drones and the carnage they deliver on foreign populations.

On Friday evening, eleven people were arrested outside Beale Air Force Base in California after demanding an end to the killing of children and other innocents caught up in America’s borderless and seemingly endless “war on terror.”

Even as the United Nations, human rights advocates and legal experts say the Obama administration’s targeted assassination program is an affront to international laws and signed treaties—the program continues apace.

In an email to Common Dreams on Sunday, longtime peace activist Kathy Kelly, one of the activists arrrested at the Beale AFB on Friday, rejects the idea that she and her companions are criminals and said she supports the many others who have been arrested for similar actions in protest against the U.S. drone and assassination programs.

“I don’t believe we committed a crime when we entered Beale AFB,” explained Kelly. “The Air Force has usurped its authority over the land by using it to control weaponized drones that maim and kill people in other lands.”

She added, “It’s encouraging to see a network of grassroots activists entering Air Force and Air National Guard bases, across the U.S., to exercise first amendment rights, seeking ‘redress of grievance.’ Those who bear the brunt of drone warfare aren’t allowed to voice their grief, sorrow and fear. “

On Saturday, half a world away in Yemen, a U.S. drone obliterated a stretch of public road as it targeted vehicles local authorities say contained militatns affiliated with al-Qaeda. Caught up in the bombing, according to reports, was another vehicle that was not part of the targeted operation.

None of those killed in the attack—as is always the case with a drone strike—were allowed to defend themselves against the accusations of their alleged crime or activities.

As is almost always the case, it is nearly impossible to fully determine the accuracy of claims made by either the Yemeni government or the U.S. military when it comes to these strikes. Though the U.S. has acknowledged it operates a drone killing program in Yemen, it refuses to speak about details of specific attacks. As of Sunday, none of the names of the victims in Saturday’s bombing had been made public.

Meanwhile, in California, the names of those arrested for protesting outside Beale Air Force Base were released as follows: Rev. Gerald Pedersen, 88; Rev. Elizabeth Griswold, 35; Rev. John Auer, 70; Rev. Sharon Delgado, 65; Kathy Kelly, 61; Michael Kerr, 65; Rodger Stall; Arthur Whitman-Bradley, 70; Nancy Reiner; Bob Russell; and Pamela Osgood, 68.

'Frontline Victims of Fracking' Demand EPA Protection

The 150 million Americans routinely exposed to toxic air as a result of oil and gas drilling need better protection from their government, demanded a coalition of 64 environmental and community groups, who on Tuesday filed a petition (pdf) asking the Environmental Protection Agency to set limits on the air pollutants emitted from these wells.

The explosion of oil and gas drilling—largely due to the expansion of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” drilling techniques—is putting more and more people at risk, the petition argues, as fossil fuel extraction is now encroaching on communities across Pennsylvania and western states where shale oil and gas are found.

“EPA needs to do its job and protect frontline victims of fracking by reducing the toxic fallout from the practice,” said Jim Schermbeck of the Dallas-Ft. Worth-based clean air group Downwinders at Risk.

And despite evidence that at least 100,000 tons of hazardous pollutants—including benzene, formaldehyde, and naphthalene—are being emitted from these sites each year, these emissions have remained largely unchecked.

“More than 150 million Americans now live near oil and gas wells or above shale areas where companies are looking to drill or engage in hydraulic fracturing, and EPA needs to set standards that restrict the hazardous air pollutants they put into the air,” said Emma Cheuse, an attorney with Earthjustice, who filed the petition on behalf of the coalition, which includes Clean Air Council, Clean Air Taskforce, Downwinders at Risk, Environmental Defense Fund, Global Community Monitor, Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, Sierra Club, and WildEarth Guardians.

The petition is calling to expand Section 112 of the Clean Air Act so that emission standards can be set on oil and gas production wells and associated equipment as well as to set national emission standards for hazardous air pollutant emissions. “Oil and gas wells release chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, and respiratory disease,” Cheuse continued, “and the EPA should protect our communities, especially our children, from exposure to these hazards.”

Schermbeck added that “almost a decade of un- and under-regulated fracking has transformed North Texas into a sacrifice zone for the gas industry” with a “well-documented trail of illness and disease” throughout the Barnett Shale region.

Earlier this year, a joint investigation by the Center for Public Integrity, Inside Climate News, and the Weather Channel revealed the toxic impact that the fracking boom has had on the health and well-being of those living near the Eagle Ford Shale in southern Texas.

Through interviews with area residents, the investigation exposed the legacy of these drilling operations in rural America. As one resident who lives a mile within 17 oil wells, told the reporters, “This crap is killing me and my family.”

Former CIA director: Final determination on Russian hacking falls to NSA

Former CIA director James Woolsey said on Sunday that it is up to the National Security Agency (NSA) to determine whether or not Russia conducted cyber attacks targeting Democratic institutions.

“This is really an NSA decision, and if — I think more than anything else. And if NSA is confident that it’s the Russians, then it almost certainly is. Depends on them,” Woolsey told ABC’s “This Week.”

Woolsey, who served as the head of the CIA from 1993-1995, said “there’s a strong chance” that the Russians are behind the hacking.

The Obama Administration formally accused Russia of trying to interfere in the U.S. election in October.

Close to Death, Hunger Striking Journalist Goes Missing in Egypt

Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Abdullah Elshamy, who has been detained in Egypt since August 2013, has reportedly been moved to an undisclosed location following warnings from his family and doctor that he is near death after more than 100 days on hunger strike.

According to Abdullah’s brother, Mosaab Elshamy, the family does not know where Abdullah is currently being held and is unable to communicate with him. “Surely he is still in jail but we don’t know where and we cannot communicate with him,” Mosaab told AFP.

“He has started to have impaired liver and kidney function,” Dr. Mohamed Ussama Al Homsi, who reviewed results from blood tests, stated to Al Jazeera this week, according to an article published Saturday. “All of these can cause big problems for him. This means that his organs are in danger.” Al Homsi warned Elshamy could “die within a few days.”

“We fear the worst following his transfer because Elshamy is in more need of proper medical attention than ever,” said Reporters Without Borders research director Lucie Morillon in a statement released Tuesday. “We urge the authorities to tell his family and lawyer where he has been transferred. He must quickly be given appropriate medical treatment before being freed. The authorities are responsible for his life and state of health.”

Elshamy was arrested last August when police attacked supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi, resulting in fighting that killed hundreds of people. Elshamy, who still has not faced formal charges and trial, began his hunger strike in January to protest his conditions of confinement. He was sentenced to another 45 days in prison on May 3.

Elshamy’s wife, Jihad Khaled, is reportedly on hunger strike to show solidarity with her incarcerated husband.

Elshamy is one of numerous journalists currently detained in Egypt, including at least three others from Al Jazeera English.

Skyrocketing Prison Population Devastating US Society: Report

Impacted communities have long slammed U.S. policies of mass incarceration that are locking up more people than any other country in the world. Now that criticism is also resounding from the highly-regarded National Research Council (an arm of the National Academy of Sciences), which issued a devastating report this week charging that “unprecedented” levels incarceration are spreading great social harm.

Following two years of data review, the 464-page report delivers a round indictment of four decades of skyrocketing incarceration that has quadrupled the prison population and torn apart families, communities, society, and the lives of the incarcerated people.

“Those in power have tried to dismiss and disparage the communities and organizations who have been calling attention to these issues and struggling to change things,” Isaac Ontiveros of Critical Resistance told Common Dreams. “Now you have the center saying the same thing people having been vocal about for a generation.”

Commissioned by the National Institute of Justice and the MacArthur Foundation, the report notes that 2.23 million people are currently locked in U.S. prisons and jails, but that number multiplies when people who are on parole or probation are considered. This is the result of an “unprecedented and internationally unique rise in U.S. state and federal prison populations” since 1973, according to an NRC statement.

The rising numbers do not correspond to an increase in violence, but rather, are driven by politically-motivated policy changes, including: the imposition of “mandatory minimums” in the 1980s, longer sentences for repeat convictions, and increased criminalization of drug offenses due to the War on Drugs.

The political push for these policies employs racist rhetoric. “Deeply held racial fears, anxieties, and animosities likely explain the resonance of coded racial appeals concerning crime-related issues,” states the report.

While the financial price of these incarceration rates has been high for society overall, the social and economic costs to poor communities and people of color is unmatched.

According to the report, “The U.S. prison population is largely drawn from the most disadvantaged part of the nation’s population: mostly men under age 40, disproportionately minority, and poorly educated.” Sixty percent of incarcerated people are people of color, and black males who did not complete high school and are younger than 35 are more likely to be incarcerated than employed in the formal labor market.

Said Ontiveros, “We can read UN reports about genocide in another country, and do that at an arm’s length, but now we have even fairly conservative institutions like the National Research Council pointing out systematic state violence in the U.S. that uses courts, police, the prison system, cultural institutions, and media to target and unleash incredible amounts of violence against certain groups of people.”

Furthermore, incarcerated people disproportionately face “drug and alcohol addictions, mental and physical illnesses, and lack of work preparation or experience,” charges the report.

While the these high incarceration rates are financially costly for society at large, the social and economic blow to low-income communities of color is unmatched. Prisons spread trauma and poverty through communities and tear families apart, charges the report. “Prisons are part of a poverty trap, with many paths leading in, but few leading out,” said committee vice chair Bruce Western, professor of sociology, Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Professor of Criminal Justice, and the director of the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.”

The committee made a series of recommendations for policies aimed at decreasing incarceration rates, including a “reconsideration of drug crime policy” and re-examination of mandatory minimum sentencing.

The report also called for steps to “improve prison conditions” and expand programming on the inside. Yet James Kilgore, who spent more than 6 years in prison and currently organizes with the No More Jails campaign in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, told Common Dreams, “What’s far more important is to reinvest money into communities that have been decimated by mass incarceration. Resources should go into community programs that keep people out of jail and prison, including public housing, substance abuse treatment, and mental health programs. Those programs, in the long run, will be more important than programs offered inside prisons and jails.”

Ontiveros agrees: “We should prioritize re-entry services and programs that are community-based and not under the purview of corrections. We cannot count on those who have propped up this abhorrent institution to be in charge of changing it.”

He added, “The bare minimum response to this report should be the immediate rolling back of the policies and sentencing guidelines and conditions of parole and probation and a swift and rigorous decarceration strategy for those who are locked up. If things still don’t change, we need to hold the people continuing these policies accountable.”

Not Wikileaks, Not Snowden… White House Outs CIA Station Chief

The White House accidentally revealed the identity of the top CIA officer in Afghanistan on Sunday, the Washington Post revealed.

The error was made when the name of the “Chief of Station” in Kabul was included on a list, sent to the media, of U.S. officials present at Obama’s visit to Afghanistan. Once the White House realized its error, it sent a subsequent revised list with the CIA official’s name redacted, the Post reports.

The Post withheld the name of the CIA official at the request of the White House.
