It’s not every day that the relatively niche sport of triathlon gets compared favourably to football, and have a prominent mention in a national newspaper’s column about the nation’s favourite sport. But these are strange times, and thanks to sports writer Sean Ingle’s recent article for The Guardian, triathlon is being held in high esteem thanks to recent measures taken by the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO).
Ingle challenges the morals of the decision many Premiership clubs have taken to furlough their backstage staff, rather than asking their stars to take a pay cut to weather the storm. This is a decision that has earned the clubs much criticism, with even health minister Matt Hancock stepping in with his opinion.
In his column, Ingle says that football would do well to learn from triathlon and the help and support the PTO are showing their athletes: “Three weeks ago the Professional Triathletes Organisation announced it would increase its annual end-of-year bonus scheme from $2m to $2.5m, and immediately paid it out rather than wait until December.
“Realising that triathletes lower down the food chain would need extra help, it gave the extra $500,000 in bonuses just to men and women ranked between 21 and 100 in the world. The world’s top 10 have also committed to doing online appearances and exhibitions and donating all the revenue to lower-ranked triathletes.”
Ingle also cited Sport England, who last week announced a £192m package to help grassroots sport, “including a £20m emergency fund with grants of between £300 and £10,000 for sports clubs and community organisations, those vital but unappreciated capillaries in our society. That comes down to smart leadership. And it matters more than ever.”

Matt Hardy was a recent guest on Busted Open Radio to discuss his decision to leave WWE and explore free agency. The Broken One remains loyal and thankful to the company and Vince McMahon, but says he wants an opportunity to utilize his experience and creative endeavors. Highlights below.
Being grateful to Vince McMahon and WWE. Says they’re on different pages creatively though:
I am very grateful, if it wasn’t for Vince McMahon giving me this opportunity 20+ years ago, I wouldn’t have had this life that I have. I will always be grateful to him for that. Even if there are things later on that we didn’t see eye to eye on, that’s business. When it comes to Vince and WWE, I’ve kind of aged out. My brand of entertainment and the way I have to be utilized isn’t one of their priorities and that’s fine. I understand that and it’s no issue. I don’t have any resentment towards anyone. I’ve very happy with the time I’ve had there and happy I got to come back and leave WWE as an employee waving the flag. That WrestleMania 33 moment was amazing. I’m very happy that I got the opportunity to do a version of Broken Matt Hardy there. It wasn’t all that I would have liked it to be. It would have been nice if I had more say in what I was doing, but it is what it is. They treated me great the whole time. I had great conversations with everyone, but creatively, we’re just on different pages. Nothing against them, it was just time for me to go somewhere else to maximize and optimize my creativity, especially if I want to be in a prominent role for the last three or four years I have left to do this.
What he’s looking for next in his career:
I’m looking to have a much bigger say in my creative process. I want to be utilized in a way I should be utilized for a 45-year-old that’s been doing this for 20 years. Not wrestling every single night, your character takes the priority to your athletic performance. That’s what I want. If I can find that atmosphere, I call that my Arcadia.

HUUB Design have designed a cycling jersey in aid of the NHS. Sporting the message “Better In Than Out” they wanted to help promote the message to stay in. The design also includes the rainbow of ‘hope’ which has become symbolic in the pandemic.
It is priced £49.99 and all profits will go to the NHS Charities Together, which acknowledges and supports NHS staff, volunteers and patients impacted by COVID-19.
In a statement they said: Here at HUUB, we want to do our bit! We are still trading, and it’s not easy, but let us be realistic, there are some out there risking themselves to serve the sick and with no respite coming for quite some time. They are the ones who ‘just get on with it’, and we wanted to do something, not for profit or glory, but just do something! We understand that what is needed are donations… So, we thought about the message that really needs to be cemented – stay in, train sensibly, only do the essential shopping, look after others, and only go out for exercise and essential work.

“It’s not for us; it’s for them. ‘In’ for now, and when this is all over, and you’re ‘out’, it will act as a reminder of sacrifice for all to see.”

— It was reported last night on ‘WWE Backstage’ that Rob Gronkowski was “close” to signing a contract with WWE with a strong hint that he would be appearing on the 3/20 edition of Smackdown in New Orleans. Tony Maglio of The Wrap is reporting that Gronk and WWE have actually already signed their agreement and that not only will he will be appearing on the above episode of Smackdown, but that he is set to make an appearance at WrestleMania 36 next month. The WrestleMania appearance though is not expected to be in any sort of wrestling capacity (ie. he will not be in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal) but rather in an angle that will set up a future match, perhaps at SummerSlam in Boston, MA. Gronk is also expected to continue in his role as a FOX NFL analyst.
— PWInsider adds that Gronkowski signed with WWE specifically as a wrestler rather than an announcer or commentator in a role similar to another part-time, Ronda Rousey.

With the triathlon calendar currently empty, why not bring the triathlon to you? Well, that’s what 220 Triathlon’s features editor Matt Baird will be doing today, for he’s undertaking a middle-distance triathlon in his back garden in aid of the NHS.

Matt will start his recreation of the Outlaw Half/Ironman 70.3 Staffs/Slateman Legend, etc, at 1.30pm and plans to spend 50minutes swimming in his 2.6 metre long, waist-height paddling pool (luckily he’s only 5ft 6in, at a push).
He’ll then hit the turbo, planning to cover the 90km in 3.5hrs on Zwift. At around 6pm he’ll start running his 13.1 miles/21km the length of his garden (some 1,400 times) in around 2hrs. The plan is to finish at 8pm with a new middle-distance PB to coincide with the Thursday night round of applause for NHS staff.
Here is a link to his just giving page where you can donate money to the NHS: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/matthew-baird220

We will be following Matt and posting progress updates throughout the afternoon or you can follow him on Twitter @mattbairdtri

AEW superstar Chris Jericho responded to a fan on Twitter who questioned why the company decided to delay the planned Blood & Guts cage match between the Inner Circle and The Elite. AEW issued a press release on Friday night explaining that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they thought it be best to delay the huge grudge match until the future.
Jericho tells the fan, “First off, pull your head out of your ass and realize these are crazy times. Secondly, we aren’t allowed to gather more than ten people together at a time. B&G has 11 inside the cage and that’s with no camera men or crew.”
