To enter this competition answer the question below;
You’ve bought a Wattbike!” a friend on Zoom shouted when they saw my new short-term loan during lockdown. Alas not, but the Echelon EX3 Max was certainly a quieter, healthier and more productive visitor than most entrants to my dining room.
While there are Wattbike comparisons, Echelon’s main rival is the £700 more Peloton (they of £8bn stock market value and dubious Christmas adverts) in the home training market, with both offering reams of live and pre-recorded indoor spin classes and training content on their apps. So, does the Echelon warrant a place in the upper echelons of the indoor training market for triathletes?
The EX3 arrives in a mightily-heavy box that won’t be welcomed by anyone on upper floors with no access to a lift. Assembly is largely straightforward, however, even for someone who’s at their upper limits with Ikea bookcases, and once built the bike is easy to move due to the front wheels. Unlike Peloton, the Echelon comes without a data screen so you’ll have to use your own phone or, preferably, a tablet. Connectivity is instant between the paid-for app (the free version is too basic) and unit, and what becomes instantly apparent is how fluid and quiet the machine is. Even with the latest gen of turbo trainers, there’s still a freehub or crankset hum. To mention the word noise in relation to the Echelon does it a disservice; this is the sound of silence and is perfect for those of us with paper-thin walls or children (potentially) sleeping upstairs. That family-friendliness continues with the usability. Our partner, Karry, who has one tri to her name but is turbo-agnostic, got a huge amount of use out of the Echelon; it involves no daily set-up, no faffing with cassettes, and the breadth of classes and upbeat presenters kept the motivation high.
But for committed triathletes? This is where the content, a mighty £39.99 per month, falls down, with a lack of tri-specific training plans and third-party compatibility; there’s no link-up with virtual racing apps such as Sufferfest or Zwift (yet Strava and Fitbit do have compatibility). There are also a few minor usability issues and, when you’re used to Zwift et al, the virtual rides around worldwide destinations are anticlimactic, with the bleak road-cycle emptiness of the Athens’ suburbs experience nearly forcing us to amend any 2021 holiday plans.

And yet, despite these flaws and the lack of ability to produce a tri-bar position, there’s currently an Echelon-shaped hole in our house. We loved the instant ease of use, that quietness and breadth of sessions, and multi-person appeal, especially with question marks over just when gyms will be able to fully reopen.
Verdict: broad appeal and affordable, but hardcore athletes will look elsewhere 80%

Battery life – it’s not a sexy sell but arguably it’s one of the most important. That’s where Coros gave the training-tool market much-needed CPR with the lower-end Pace and has extended to the pricier Apex Pro with a mooted 40hrs in training mode. Over testing, we’d reduce that to 35hrs but it’s still impressive. But at £460, what else justifies buying this over Garmin, Polar and Suunto? Well, it’s swimming in features. We’re talking the usuals of GPS and optical heart rate monitor, but also optical pulse oximeter and barometer.

GPS pick-up and retention is pretty good. Just make sure you’ve fully connected with the satellite or else your data won’t catch up. The optical HR system is borrowed from the more expensive Vertix and does a solid job. The pulse oximeter should come into its own at altitude, which was tricky while locked down in Bristol, but in theory this is a useful addition to monitor acclimatisation time (although it won’t match clinical-grade devices).
Usability is okay. Two buttons sandwich a larger scroll dial that switches between the myriad features. It’s easily done, though clumsy hands – ours – can easily knock it when clambering over a log. There’s also a touchscreen for some sections that’s not really necessary, and a cumbersome security feature. The app is clean and concise but lacks the depth of its rivals. And at this price point, that’s arguably what you want. All in all, it’s not a bad device but not unique enough to challenge its older rivals. JW coros.com
Verdict: Solid offering that doesn’t quite do enough at a congested price point 70%

Sport in England took a major step towards resuming today, as the government announced the latest easing in lockdown measures would allow pools (outdoor and indoor) and gyms to reopen.
Outdoor pools will be the first to welcome swimmers back in the water, with a date of 11th July set (although check your lido’s website and social media to see what additional booking systems may be in place and what date they will be ready to welcome you). Indoor pools, gyms and sports facilities will come a little later, from 25th July. In addition, grass roots sports will be able to start up again from this coming weekend (11th July).
Facilities will be subject to changes though in line with areas including social distancing and cleanliness. For a full guide to these, see the gov.uk page here.
British Triathlon have issued a statement today here, welcoming the news, in which Andy Salmon, British Triathlon Chief Executive, said: “We are all excited to get our swim, bike, run community back into action. We want to thank the government and colleagues at Sport England for working alongside us to find a safe way for our sport to resume.
“We ask that our community bear with us while we finalise our guidance and ensure that when you return to the sport you can do so in a safe and straightforward way. We are also delighted to see a plan for the opening of pools, indoor gyms and sport facilities across England.”

Following the news last week that grassroot sports can return to England, British Triathlon have produced a set of guidelines for clubs, coaches and event organisers to follow. These are designed to ensure each event is as Covid-secure as possible, and safe for participants.
From the 18th July English clubs and coaches can host events for more than six people, providing they follow correct procedures, while in Wales clubs and coaches can organise activities for up to 30 people.
Event organisers in England can apply to British Triathlon for a permit, and permitted events can take place from 25 July, providing they follow procedures.
In a statement British Triathlon CEO Andy Salmon said: “I am delighted that we are able to resume swim, bike, run activity in England over the coming weeks and look forward to supporting clubs and event organisers to deliver safe and exciting events.
“We hope to see a similar relaxation of restrictions in Scotland and Wales in the near future.”

Ingraham said Sunday she has spoken with the president-elect.
“It’s an intriguing idea,” she said on “Fox News Sunday.”
A report surfaced earlier this month that the radio host was under serious consideration to serve as Trump’s White House press secretary.
The president-elect said he appreciated Ingraham’s loyalty throughout the campaign.
Ingraham helped Trump during his campaign with debate preparation, campaigned on his behalf and offered occasional strategic advice.
She was one of a few media figures who did a great deal to promote Trump’s candidacy, using her outlet to advocate on his behalf.

Trump’s rhetoric during the campaign appalled the left, and his appointments since winning the White House have only compounded liberal anxiety.
Yet the incoming president has also made promises to struggling, blue-collar Americans that echo the priorities of progressive Democrats.
The Republican has lashed out at free-trade deals and outsourcing while railing against an economy that he says is rigged for the “elites.” He has called for new spending on infrastructure and reiterated his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership in a video released late Monday afternoon.
“I think it’s smart for progressives to make as much progress as they can with Trump in power,” said Tad Devine, who served as a senior adviser to Sanders during his Democratic presidential primary battle with Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonWhite House accuses Biden of pushing ‘conspiracy theories’ with Trump election claim Biden courts younger voters — who have been a weakness Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton qualifies to run for county commissioner in Florida MORE. Devine emphasized he was speaking in a personal capacity, not on behalf of Sanders.
Trump “is going to have this authority for four years and people are hurting. They can’t wait for progress on economic issues.”
Devine asserted that Democrats could still “draw the bright lines where we need to,” even while working with Trump on some issues. To back away completely, he warned, would mean suffering the “political consequences” with working-class voters who might think the party was deaf to their concerns.
But others on the left see things differently. To cooperate with Trump, they warn, runs the risk of “normalizing” a political figure they see as an existential threat to democracy.
“Democrats shouldn’t look at Trump through rose-colored glasses,” said Ben Wikler, the Washington director of progressive group MoveOn. “If you look at who he has appointed, one after another, it has been people enthusiastic about doing the worst things.”
While Wikler said there was a place for Democrats to offer a positive agenda, he added that “it is important not to mistake Trump’s gestures in their direction with an actual desire to advance a populist, progressive agenda.”
Sanders and Warren, the two leading lights of the left, have thus far walked a careful line since Trump’s election victory.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Sanders called Trump’s rhetoric about Latinos “outrageous” and said that his earlier promotion of the “birther” movement, which holds that President Obama is not a natural-born U.S. citizen, was “nothing less than a racist effort to undermine the legitimacy of the first African-American president.”
But, Sanders continued, “Donald Trump has talked about [how] he is not going to cut social security, Medicare and Medicaid. He is going to work to re-establish a Glass-Steagall legislation. He wants to rebuild the infrastructure. Those are issues that some of us have been working on for years. And if he wants to work with us on those issues, I accept that.”
Warren adopted a similar approach in her first major speech after the election.
“When [Trump’s] goal is to increase the economic security of middle-class families, then count me in,” she told the executive council of the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation.
In the same speech, the Massachusetts senator asserted that Trump had “regularly made statements that undermined core values of our democracy.” She also insisted that Democrats’ “first job” during his tenure would be to “stand up to bigotry.”
It remains to be seen to what extent Trump will reach out to Democrats, especially given that his party will control both the House and Senate next year.
Trump appears interested in bringing a Democrat into a top administration job.
Rep. Tulsi GabbardTulsi GabbardGabbard drops defamation lawsuit against Clinton It’s as if a Trump operative infiltrated the Democratic primary process 125 lawmakers urge Trump administration to support National Guard troops amid pandemic MORE (D-Hawaii), who resigned as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee to back Sanders over Clinton in the primary, met with Trump on Monday, apparently at the behest of the president-elect’s most controversial adviser, former Breitbart News executive Stephen Bannon.
In a statement afterward, Gabbard said that the meeting had been focused on foreign policy, especially the conflict in Syria, and the battle against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and al-Qaeda.
“While the rules of political expediency would say I should have refused to meet with President-elect Trump, I never have and never will play politics with American and Syrian lives,” she said.
After the meeting, top Trump aide Kellyanne Conway told reporters gathered at Trump Tower that there was “a lot of common ground” between the Democratic congresswoman and Trump.
Just one day before, however, Trump met with Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state and a noted hard-liner on immigration. Kobach was photographed carrying a memo that included a recommendation for a system under which “all aliens from high risk areas are tracked.”
That proposal, not far removed from the concept of a Muslim registry, sparked fresh outrage among Trump’s critics.
Asked about the juxtaposition between the Gabbard and Kobach meetings, MoveOn’s Wikler did not criticize Gabbard by name. But he warned, “Don’t be snookered — that’s my advice to Democrats. You don’t need a Ph.D. from Trump University to know that Trump operates in bad faith almost instinctively.”
Some veteran Democratic hands believe that Trump has no real interest in pursuing the more economically populist parts of his agenda.
Should Trump adopt a more traditional Republican economic policy, it would get progressive lawmakers off the hook, likely allowing them to stand in unified opposition.
Jim Manley, a former aide to retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry ReidHarry Mason ReidHarry Reid says he’s cancer free White House gets jolt from strong jobs report Murkowski, Mattis criticism ratchets up pressure on GOP over Trump MORE (D-Nev.), said he understood why the likes of Sanders and Warren would make positive noises about Trump’s more populist economic promises. But, he asserted, “from what I’m seeing there is not a snowball’s chance in hell it is going to work.”
Manley added, “If there is a fair deal to be cut, I think Democrats should take it, because people need help. … I’m not one of those people saying ‘Hell, no.’ I’m just not convinced it is ever going to work out, like some folks are hoping.”
Sanders himself seems to be coming to a similar view. On Monday, he published a post on Medium in which he said that Trump, as a candidate, had correctly identified the need for investment in infrastructure.
“But the plan he offered is a scam that gives massive tax breaks to large companies and billionaires on Wall Street,” Sanders added.

Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, in a television interview with NBC News on Wednesday night, said firmly that his country has no plans to build a nuclear weapon, no desire to do so, and hopes that tensions with the U.S. over its atomic program can soon be put to rest.
“We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb, and we are not going to do so,” Rouhani told NBC’s Ann Curry in the interview. “We solely are looking for peaceful nuclear technology.”

Iran has repeatedly said over the years that its nuclear program is intended for energy and scientific purposes, but the U.S. routinely rejects these assertions.
Rouhani, however, considered more moderate and less bellicose than his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was precise and unwavering in his statement: “Under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever.”
Watch:
The interview with the U.S. news outlet comes amid increased tension in the region, with one of Iran’s key allies, Syria, in the midst of a bloody civil war and under threat of possible military attack by western powers. Still, according to many experts on Iran and the politics of the regioin, Rouhani’s election has opened a door to new diplomatic opportunities between the U.S. and the Islamic republic.
According to NBC:
According to a Wednesday op-ed in the Guardian penned by Hossein Mousavian, a former spokesperson for Iran’s nuclear negotiating team, the time for new talks and a path forward between the U.S. and Iran is now. Published just ahead Rouhani’s comments to NBC, he writes:
Though it won’t be easy, a report put out last month by the International Crisis Groups urges U.S. policy makers and elected officials to take a more flexible and productive approach to Iran. As foreign policy analyst Jim Lobe reported at the time:
