LFP summon Marseille & OGC Nice to disciplinary hearing

In a press release on Monday morning, the French professional league body the LFP announced their decision to summon representatives of both OGC Nice and Marseille to the Disciplinary Committee for a hearing on Wednesday.

This emerges after Les Aiglons supporters invaded the pitch during Sunday night’s clash with OM after initially striking Dimitri Payet with a projectile – last night’s events as they unfolded can be read about here.

Christophe Galtier on accusation of punch on Marseille director: “I had no intention to assault.”

Speaking ahead of Nice’s match against Bordeaux this weekend, manager Christophe Galtier notably responded to questions regarding the unsavoury incidents in his team’s match against Marseille.

His words transcribed in RMC Sport, Galtier notably referred to the video allegedly showing him hitting David Friio, one of the Marseille directors, in the midst of the mass brawl as supporters flooded through onto the pitch.

“I have no comment on that. Obviously, I’ve seen and I’ve heard it. The disciplinary committee is working on the whole incident and we must let them do their job. Then there’s that person that I supposedly attacked who we need to ask. My version is the truth, and it’s simple.”

“I know David Friio, we met at Saint-Étienne. When he came on to the pitch, it had been crowded for a while. I asked him whether everyone could go back into the changing rooms. I took him by the neck and he lowered his head. I had no intention to assault. Five minutes later, we were in the tunnel walking together. You can zoom in and pause on images to make an action like that look like a slap or a punch.”

Wolves make €15m bid for Duje Caleta Car

RMC Sport report that Ligue 1 side Marseille have received a €15m offer from Premier League side Wolves for Croatian international central defender Duje Caleta Car.

It remains to be seen whether or not OM consider this offer to be sizeable enough and whether or not Caleta Car wants to move to Wolves.

West Ham continue to follow the situation closely in the event that their deal with Chelsea for Kurt Zouma falls through.

Nice docked two points as Marseille game to be replayed on neutral ground

The LFP have tonight given their verdict on the outcome of the suspended Nice-Marseille game, which had been interrupted by a pitch invasion on the part of the home side’s ultras and an ensuing mass brawl involving fans, players and members of staff.

The disciplinary commission has ruled that the match will be replayed behind closed doors, on a neutral ground. In addition, Nice have been docked two points – although one of these points is a suspended sentence.

OM defender Álvaro González has been banned for two games, while Dimitri Payet – the target of bottle-throwing from Nice fans, who sparked the pitch invasion by throwing one back – was given a suspended one-game ban. Meanwhile, Marseille physio Pablo Fernández was handed a nine-month touchline suspension for his role in the events on the pitch, lasting until June 30 2022.

Luan Peres on arriving in Ligue 1: “Forwards are more efficient in front of goal here.”

Speaking to La Provence over the weekend, Brazilian defender Luan Peres discussed his arrival at Marseille this summer and his quick adaptation to life in Ligue 1, despite a rough start that included a burglary on his new home.

The 27-year-old notably underlined the differences between Brazilian football and Ligue 1, concluding that the latter is more of a challenge for defenders, as a result of its efficient forwards. Peres also speaks about his relationship with manager Jorge Sampaoli, having first met the coach during his time at Santos.

The centre-back also notably cited Chelsea’s Thiago Silva and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk among his defensive role models, indicating that he watches the Dutchman’s games to learn from him.

“I always played like this [out from the back] in Brazil. With Sampaoli at Santos, it was a feature that we tried to put into practice. I’ve always had that skill, but Sampaoli has always looked to get the best out of me. Playing in a three-man central defence has allowed me to have more freedom when playing out from the back.”

“I’ve known [Sampaoli] since my Santos days. I can say that his style is similar over here, he’s always liked playing with three central defenders, or a four-man defence with me on the left. But he hasn’t actually changed a lot. He improves his tactics, he’s adapted as the game is different in Europe. In any case, he’s always been at big clubs, he’s been a national team manager [Argentina] and he’s always had success with those tactics.”

“I think I’ve adapted well, I’ve worked very hard for it. We played well in the friendlies, against Braga, Benfica, or even Villarreal. I think all of that has helped us start the season well. There were also difficult situations, particularly the burglary, which affected my wife and I.”

In terms of what happened at Nice [pitch invasion by fans, Peres one of the Marseille players hurt], it was the first time that had happened in my career, there are always difficult moments in a career. In any case, OM have always supported me, and I separate what happens on and off the pitch. Now, it’s all in the past.”

“There are several players which have inspired me. Notably Thiago Silva, who is an exceptional centre-back. Currently, I’m very much fond of Virgil van Dijk, I watch him a lot. I try to watch his matches to learn from him.”

“There’s a great difference between football in Brazil and in France. Here, forwards are much more efficient in front of goal. The style of play is quicker as well, the transitions are quick and the players are stronger. It’s harder to mark and contain them. But my adaptation has been easy so far.”

Two Marseille supporters arrested after Angers incidents

L’Équipe report today that two Marseille supporters have been arrested following the crowd trouble that took place at the end of last night’s 0-0 draw at Angers, which notably ended in a pitch invasion by OM supporters.

The Angers state prosecutor has confirmed that the first had been taken in for throwing flares at the start of the match, with the second being arrested after taking part in the pitch invasion.

The prosecutor has added that there were no injuries from the ensuing short fight between supporters after the game, while neither Angers nor the Ligue 1 authorities have filed a complaint thus far.

Jean-Michel Aulas on PSG: “Lyon has to be an alternative to them.”

Speaking to Prime Video ahead of tonight’s derby against Saint-Étienne, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas notably discussed the role his club could play as an antithesis to Paris Saint-Germain. Nevertheless, he admits that given the strength of Les Parisiens – not least after a busy transfer window – this is increasingly difficult.

“Are we expecting Lyon to compete with PSG? We are, but it’s true that it’s difficult. But OL, which is in the second biggest city in France, has to be an alternative to PSG whatever the means available to achieve that are.”

“So it’s true that with Messi, plus Mbappé, plus Neymar, plus Di María… In any case we’re working towards it but it’s not an exact science. You have to know when to take your time, go back to the start and maybe have a good season this year, even if we haven’t started as well as we would have hoped to.”
