CNC Workholding for Milling Machines

New Arrival Summer French Braided Pearl Earrings

In the world of manufacturing, there is an art to proper CNC workholding.

You can have a great design and program for your part and the best machine and material to work with, but if you don’t have the proper means to hold the material (keeping it as rigid and vibration-free as possible) then all that means nothing. “A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!” This quote is understood by every machinist, tool and die maker, production cell supervisor, and operations manager. Nothing stops a successful process in its tracks like poorly secured material, which can cause tool breakage, material slip, high scrap rates, possible machine damage, and worst case scenario, potential operator injury. So, let’s take a closer look at some CNC workholding options.

Many years ago, DATRON AG recognized the importance of reliable workholding and its impact on the machining workflow.  That led them to develop a line of workholding solutions for DATRON milling machines. These solutions were designed to be versatile, reliable, accurate, and easy to set up.

A benefit of using DATRON’s tested CNC workholding is the time and material you’ll save. How long does it take the operator to load and unload the machine? How much product gets scrapped from slippage? How many tools get damaged and prematurely replaced? These material and time losses translate to dollars lost. Think about how much that totals per part and production run. It could cut significantly into your profit margins. That’s why it’s important to invest in the right workholding.

Introducing the lineup of CNC workholding that enhances DATRON machines:

T-Slot Tables

T-Slot table CNC workholding mounts to the machine bed and can be equipped with wedge clamping or short stoke pneumatic clamps among other solutions.

Work Pallets

Our work pallets or QuickPallets are one of our CNC workholding solutions that are keyed using a beveled boss-in-cavity system to ensure location repeatability.

Wedge Clamping Elements

The wedge clamping CNC workholding units can be configured for single and multiple clamping setups. The clamps can be used flexibly on the DATRON T-slot plage thanks to the clamping screw and T-nut.

Compact Centric Clamps

The compact centric clamp stays completely protected from dirt, chips, and debris. The special slide geometry with a guide length of 150 mm makes it a fully encapsulated centric clamp.

Pneumatic Clamps: Short stroke, positional

Need to stay flexible and keep cycle times down? Then pneumatic clamps (short stroke and positional) are a smart, time-saving workholding to use.

Pneumatic Vertical Clamps

The pneumatic clamping systems are a CNC workholding solution that helps reduce setup times.

Vacuum Chuck aka Vacuum Table

This is where the DATRON magic happens. No gaskets are needed with this design, just a layer of card stock. The vacuum table efficiently secures workpieces to the milling machine bed. Even thin stock, like plastic foil as thin as 0.001″ and delicate, soft materials, can be secured within seconds.

Precision Rotary Axis

The rotary axis adds 4-axis functionality to any DATRON milling machine.

Precision Rotary Axis with Tailstock

The rotary axis with tailstock also upgrades DATRON milling machines to 4th-axis machining capabilities.

Rotary Swivel Table (Trunnion for 5th Axis)

The rotary swivel table, aka the trunnion, mounts in the cut-out of a DATRON’s machine bed. This upgrades the 3-axis milling machine to 5th-axis capabilities.

Pick n Place System (Automation)

The pick and place uses an automated arm to move blanks and finished workpieces from the pallet to the fixture and back. This CNC automation solution is easy to operate, just one program runs both the automation and machining process.

Each workholding solution was designed to significantly reduce your setup times, help ensure positional repeatability, and improve your production quality overall. DATRON takes it beyond optimized workholding though, since the engineers designed the entire workflow to be more efficient and easy. At DATRON Dynamics, we are your one-stop shop for DATRON CNC mills, workholding accessories, carbide cutters, training, and application support. Curious how a DATRON could improve your manufacturing process? Just ask us.

The center pane of the quoting interface.

What's New?

Let’s start with the center pane of the page, which displays your part information. A focal point of the redesign was to provide more real estate for displaying information to users while maintaining a clean and clear appearance to make that information easy to review. Here are a few key areas you’ll see in this portion of the page:

1.) Part Detail Cards:
Each uploaded line item displays on its own card. Thanks to changes we’ve made elsewhere, the cards are larger, so information such as part size, process, material, and more are easier to read.

2.) Line Item Cost and Lead Times:
Each line item’s pricing and lead time options are more prominent and easier to read. You can quickly change the order lead time by clicking on the boxes.

3.) Free Shipping Icon:
You may notice an icon of a truck next to the lead time options; this represents options that are eligible for free shipping. The icon helps users quickly understand which options come with free shipping benefits.

4.) Certifications Button:
We repositioned the button to add certifications so it’s more clearly displayed and easy to access. Use this button to apply certifications across all line items simultaneously. You can add certifications at a line-by-line level in the part configuration screen.

5.) DFM Check:
At a glance, you receive a confirmation if the line item has DFM concerns. If a potential DFM issue is detected, you can click the link to the part analysis screen, where you can review the feedback with our 3D viewer.

6.) Part Modification Buttons:
We’ve relabeled the buttons associated with part modification so users can more clearly understand their function. Click “Configure Part” to go to the part configuration screen to edit the manufacturing process, material, features, etc. “Revise CAD” will open a pop-up that allows you to upload a revised version of the current part. “Remove” will allow you to remove the line item from the quote.

The right pane of the quoting page.

To the right of the page, you’ll find the pane which contains additional lead time controls, checkout functions, and more. This section is individually scrollable and allows for a cleaner look in addition to opening up more vertical room elsewhere on the page. The critical aspects of this section are summarized below:

A.) Order Lead Time Options:
The overall order lead time options are displayed from top to bottom. Quickly select the lead time you desire using the radio buttons. The ship date and a reminder of how soon you need to order to receive that ship date are visible below the options.

B.) Apply Promo Button:
We added a button to apply account credits or special promotion codes from the quote summary page. This change also means discounts can be reflected in the shareable copy of your quote so colleagues and purchasers can easily see overall pricing and savings.

C.) Financing Options:
You’ll see your financing options if you’ve qualified for and set up business financing.

D.) Carbon Offset:
Applying carbon offsets via Xometry’s Go Green Initiative is easier to find and use. Choose your offset amount and the project you’d like to fund.

E.) Share Quote Buttons:
The buttons to download a copy of your quote or share it with a purchaser are more prominent. Click “Download” to receive a PDF copy of the quote, or click “Share” to send the quote to a colleague or purchaser.

Machining Ceramics: A Complete Guide

As one of the most popular material categories in the world, ceramics are used widely across a variety of industries. Most commonly associated with pottery and household objects, ceramics can also be utilized in other products, including the ones with electrical appliances and medical equipment.

CNC machining is by far the best method for large-scale manufacturing of ceramic products. As a hands-off, computer-controlled approach, it allows you to create thousands of parts in a relatively short period of time. Not to mention the high-quality, smooth finish you receive when working with methods such as laser cutting.

In this guide, we’ll go over the various applications of ceramic materials, the different types of ceramics, as well as some guidelines you should follow when designing and machining ceramic products. After reading this complete guide, you’ll have a far better understanding of what to expect, and how to get the most out of machining ceramics.

Applications of Ceramics

CNC ceramic machining can be used in any industry, from everyday household item production all the way to massively producing decorative pieces. Out of all the possible applications, three stand out the most: electronic, industrial, and medical.

In the electronics field, ceramic parts turn out to be incredibly handy as electrical parts with high wear resistance and high precision. Ceramics have very high insulating properties, which makes them the perfect choice for manufacturers who want to avoid electrical and fire hazards. Ceramic materials such as quartz, macor, or aluminum nitride are frequently used in the manufacturing process of semi-conductors.

The variety of industrial applications of ceramics is incredibly wide. While these materials are great for large, smooth pillars or structures, they are even better for creating industrial parts that are small, complex, and require high-precision. Due to their high wear resistance, ceramics are ideal for parts that are meant to last for a long time in busy industrial environments. The types of ceramic used in industrial settings include but are not limited to mullite, quartz, or mycalex.

Finally, the medical field is another area where the use of ceramics is prevalent. They are used to create implants meant to go into the body, as they do not pose a risk of adverse or allergic reactions, as opposed to other materials. Zirconia (a type of ceramic) is also widely used by dentists to create high-quality dental implants.

Different Types of Ceramics

People tend to bundle ceramics together as a singular material, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are dozens of different ceramics, with each one coming with different characteristics and specifications. Knowing the most popular types of ceramics used for machining is crucial, as it will allow you to choose the one that suits your business niche the most.

Alumina

Thanks to its great electrical and mechanical properties, alumina works incredibly well for manufacturing smaller parts of larger tools or appliances. It can be easily machined into specific shapes, and with the right brazing or metalizing techniques, it can be seamlessly joined with metals.

Aluminum Nitride

It is similar to alumina, with a key difference being its lower thermal expansion coefficient. This makes aluminum nitride great for semi-conductor manufacturing, as it matches the expansion of silicon wafers to a tee.

Alumina Silicate

Also known as lava, alumina silicate is a type of ceramic that can withstand very high temperatures, making it great for electrical or thermal insulation purposes.

Graphite

This ceramic material is carbon-based. Its density is dependent on the polymer state. With even better chemical, thermal, and shock resistance than alumina silicate, graphite is perfect for manufacturing items such as molds or furnace parts.

Glass

These polycrystalline ceramics that include Vycor, Pyrex, and other materials are extremely resistant to thermal shock. Due to these properties, ceramic glass parts make for great insulation parts.

Mullite

More suited for laser cutting than machining, this ceramic material is perfectly suited for large, structural parts. It has great temperature stability, creep resistance, and strength. Mullite is frequently used for producing furniture, as well as large heat insulation parts and furnace centers.

Macor

One of the most unique ceramics out there. It is used in highly-specific industries with very strict quality control requirements, such as aerospace, semiconductors, and medicine. It does not get wet, insulates extremely well even at very high voltages, and does not deform even under the highest pressures.

Mycalex

Similarly to mullite, mycalex is a resistant ceramic, often found in structural parts. However, rather than being used for larger components, it is most commonly machined into small industrial parts that require durability and temperature resistance.

Quartz

Due to its fantastic optical properties, you can find quartz in many lighting appliances, as well as in semi-conductors. Rather than by cutting, machining quartz into whatever you want it to become should be done via abrasive techniques.

Zirconia

As we mentioned earlier, zirconia is commonly used in the stomatological industry to produce dental implants. This is because this ceramic material is incredibly resistant to chemicals and corrosion, making it the best choice for tooth replacements.

Machining Ceramics Guidelines

We have already established that ceramics are highly malleable materials with differing properties (depending on what type of ceramic you decide to use). While that makes them great for all sorts of machining work, there are certain factors that you need to be aware of before beginning to work with ceramics.

First of all, always use the appropriate method for the ceramic you’re using. For example, you would not use the same machine for both zirconia and mullite. Mullite is better suited for laser cutting, whereas zirconia is more delicate (although resistant to corrosion and chemicals), and should be molded using cutting and abrasive methods. Similar rules apply to other kinds of ceramics.

Read up on the type of material you’re planning to use and make sure to adjust your techniques. The rundown included in this article is a good starting point, but you might also want to reach out to your suppliers, as well as get a second opinion from other business owners who also use the same ceramic.

Secondly, there are certain design requirements you need to consider. We’ll go into more detail on that in a moment, but for now, remember that a poorly designed ceramic part is at a high risk of breaking or cracking.

Finally, remember to always make prototypes! This guideline can really be applied to manufacturing any kind of a complex part, regardless of the material you’re using. Set your machinery to create just one copy of your component first, and see whether or not it meets all of your requirements. If it does, you can move on to machining a larger number of the same parts. If not, then you can always go back to your design and make the necessary changes without wasting a lot of money and energy on a flawed batch of products.

What to Keep in Mind When Designing

Designing ceramic parts for machining is similar to creating designs intended for other materials, but there are certain rules you need to follow in order to avoid faulty products or damaging your equipment. Here are some pointers to consider when drafting your first design:

  • Avoid pointy edges (especially long ones)
  • Oval designs don’t tend to work well with ceramics; make them round instead
  • Corners and sharp edges increase the risk of breakage, and they can easily cut through skin
  • Corner pockets are good alternatives to sharp corners if you don’t want to opt for rounded edges
  • If your design includes holes, make sure they are not located too close to each other

The Bottom Line

Computer numerical control (CNC) machining is great for mass producing all sorts of products and parts that require high precision and thorough adherence to the design documents. Ceramic materials are some of the most frequently used by machinists. While popular and relatively inexpensive, they require a fair bit of knowledge before diving off the deep end and beginning the manufacturing process.

Most importantly, you need to be able to distinguish between different types of ceramics in order to use the one that best suits your products or specific components. You also need to be very careful when designing your parts so as not to increase the risk of breakage.

Hopefully, our extensive guide to machining ceramics made for a good starting point, allowing you to continue your entrepreneurial journey with more confidence and clarity regarding your next steps.

How CNC Motorcycle Parts to Make Your Bike Cooler

Posted on: March 25th, 2019, | By Candy , WayKen Marketing Manager

Motorcycles inspire a lot of people for the cool looks you get when riding one and for their extensive mobility compared to cars. In addition, motorcycles are among the most customizable mechanisms widely available. It is often falsely considered that bike individualization is only possible if you know a lot about the motorcycle structure or if you can do some of the customizing yourself. However, even a complete newbie can get a completely unique modification without any need for special knowledge by purchasing CNC motorcycle parts from prototyping services.

Why CNC Machined Parts Are Indispensable for Motorcycles

Even if you are not a motorcycle enthusiast, you may still find a great use for CNC motorcycle parts. The reason for that is that motorcycles are easier damaged in an accident. The reason for that is their superior speed and sleek but not very sturdy design. So, there is often a case when you have scratched a car or brushed against the pavement and need to replace some part. You went to one shop, another shop and maybe a couple of others and haven’t found the part you need. What to do then? Well, you will probably need to order some CNC spare parts from a machine shop.

These services have become widespread and with the development of modern machining technologies, they are no longer expensive. So, anyone can order CNC aluminum parts for a lucrative price and not wait months for it. At Wayken, we have a professional aluminum machining team and can help you to create aluminum prototypes and aluminum parts, completely tailored to your bike. What’s more, our CNC aluminum experienced project engineers and machinists can meet any complex aluminum parts design specification.

Customizable Elements of The Motorcycle

Motorcycles being simpler than cars are very customizable. You can literally assemble your own bike if you want to and a lot of people nowadays actually do that. However, you don’t necessarily need to assemble a whole bike to consider your vehicle customized. There are different degrees to that. From the simplest ways where you paint or add stickers to your motorcycle to the hardcore level of tinkering with custom CNC motor parts, engine testing, and power amplification.

There is a list of motorcycle elements are most commonly customized as they are either visible or will provide the most change in the motorcycle performance.

Wheels Customization

The role of wheels in the overall look of the bios cannot be underestimated. Motorcycle wheels are much more visible than car wheels and this influence the overall look of the bike more. What can we customize here?

The disks of the wheels are CNC aluminum parts mostly manufactured by milling. There are cast disks as well but those are milled after casting anyway. Balancing motorcycle wheels is one of the most important features to be said about their requirements. However, that is usually done multiple times during the life of the wheel so don’t worry if your disk is a little bit unbalanced after manufacturing

Motorcycle tires differ in their design depending on their use. Modern tires are intricate multi-layer composite rubber products with complex manufacturing processes that involve melting, curing and forming. The majority of tires is mass produced. What you can do about the tires

Tuning The Engine With CNC Motorcycle Parts

The engine is the heart of a motorcycle and its most complex element. That’s why engine customizing or as it is more often called engine tuning is often done by semi-professionals it professionals who participate in the competition. CNC Motorsport parts enable them to push their engine to the limit. However, even if you don’t race, the desire to increase the power of your engine without buying a new one can be fulfilled by tuning the engine. Here are the main ways to do it.

The cylinder head ensures the successful intake of air and fuel mixture. This mixture usually enters the combustion chamber under an angle. The sharper this angle the more fuel will enter. The more the fuel the more the power you will get. So, the cylinder head is modified to increase fuel intake. You can either modify the channel or the valve that opens at certain intervals for the fuel-gas mixture to enter. The valves are usually CNC turned components later heat-treated and ground to near perfect tolerances. So, you’ll have to be careful about modifying those.

Camshafts are CNC turned components that control the engine cycle. They have a lot of specifically profiled cams at different angles. The shaft revolves and those cams control the opening of the fuel intake and exhaust valves in the engine. These shafts can be modified or manufactured from scratch to keep the valves open for longer intervals of time so that more fuel enters the combustion chamber. Prototype parts performance can be checked before manufacturing a heat treated durable version

Pistons. Once you have done the previous modifications you’d better change pistons as well because more fuel means more stress and temperature for them. Stock pistons have specified working conditions and increasing them can lead to early piston wear.

Custom lights can bring a lot into the image of your bike. However, be wary. While being seemingly nominal, motorcycle lights ensure the safety of the motorcycle driver and other people on the road so make sure you use high-quality components.

The lights usually consist of the bulb (or another source), the lens and the cover. Now, the lens and the cover are what can be modified by CNC machining. The lenses are usually made of metal. CNC milled on a 5-axis machining Centre from aluminum mostly and polished to a mirror-like surface. The cover is machined as well. But the material is most often polycarbonate. This polymer is hit-resistant and almost as transparent as glass.

Custom Aesthetic Parts

Other parts that can be customized are motorcycle body covers and the driver seat. They mostly boast complex geometries and intricate patterns.  Motorcycle manufacturers usually form them or cast but for custom orders, those are CNC parts. With modern 5-Axis machining, you can basically create any design you wish. Curves, art deco, or maybe even a sculpture of a bear/eagle or any other beast is possible with CNC machining.  The reason for that is the maximum number of degrees of freedom the mill cutter has while machining.
