It's still early morning as I write this, but Beyoncé's manicure has me craving a cold glass of bubbles. The Cowboy Carter musician swapped her “Texan French” nails in favor of a sheer microshimmer champagne shade, and if a manicure could be classified as “blonde,” it would definitely be this one.

The nails made their debut in Bey's latest Instagram video, set to her song “Sweet Honey Buckin'.” Her nails are long, shaped into a slightly rounded almond shape and painted a shape-shifting color that looks nude in one light and frosty in another thanks to the shimmer finish. When she's standing still, they look like a simple neutral mani, but when she moves, they catch the light and look almost glazed, though a zoom-in on the manicure reveals no chrome powder was involved. (Or if it was, we'd need a magnifying glass to see it.)

They're naked, but not—a look that certainly seems to be a trend amidst our favorite celebrities, Bey included. Jennifer Lopez wore a similar summery shimmer look recently, with her long, almond-shaped nails covered in a sheer neutral color with the tiniest hint of sparkle, while Halle Bailey gave her barely-there nails a twist of super sheer ballet pink.

Beyoncé's nails were the perfect match for her long, blonde curls, a mix of darker honey tones at the back and bright, pale creamy blonde around her face, styled as always by hairstylist Neal Farinah. The mani even matches her duster, a patterned beige suede jacket tied over denim cutoffs! Makeup artist Armando Kole applied an equally shimmery champagne shadow over the musician's lids and defined her eyes with delicate tracings of dark liner on both the upper and lower lashline, finishing with an apricot blush, highlighter, and lip gloss.

At the end of the video, Beyoncé does a little “Cheers!” at the camera with her glass of champagne, so I'm taking that as a sign that it's officially the weekend. Thanks, Bey!

A new paper introduces a biomimetic super slippery surface with excellent and durable anti-icing property for immovable heritage conservation.

The formation and accumulation of ice on solid surface is not only a potential threat to our daily life, but also a hazard to cultural heritages, such as murals, grottoes, monuments, ancient buildings. Inspired by slippery inner surface of Nepenthes, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) for anti-icing attract a lot of attention recently. In a new work, the dip-coating approach is utilised to create a hydrophobic silica layer grafted with long-chain organic molecules. After infusing the oil phase, a three-layer Nepenthes-like structure is formed.

Anti-icing durability

The SLIPS shows excellent anti-icing property. It reduces the ice-surface adhesion strength to 0 kPa on non-porous surface and 6.83 kPa on porous surface (sandstone from Yungang Grottoes) respectively. After 35 icing/de-icing cycles, the SLIPS still shows good anti-icing ability. The results show that the middle long-chain organic layer not only enhances the surface hydrophobicity but also increases its affinity with the oil phase to reduce lubricating oil loss, thus increasing its anti-icing durability. When the anti-icing ability decreases with time, simple re-infusing the oil phase can easily restore the anti-icing performance to its original level. As the researchers point out, the SLIPSs prepared in their work show outstanding hydrophobicity, ice repellency, durability and satisfying water vapor permeability on treated porous sandstones, which makes it potential to protect immovable cultural heritages from ice hazard.

The study has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 184, November 2023.

In a paper published in Cell, researchers have shown that the peptide neuromedin B (NMB) is essential for signaling sneezing.  Mice deficient in NMB recptors and mice with NMB-sensitive neurons ablated in the sneeze-evoking region did not show the sneeze reflex.  Chemically activating NMB-sensitive neurons led to sneezing.

Earlier, neuromedin B was shown to induce acute itch in mice and monkeys.  It induced itching by activating the peripheral sensory neurons.  Unlike gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), which also induces itch, NMB does not involve mast cell degranulation.

In an exclusive interview with our colleagues at RMC, Karim Benzema’s lawyer Alain Jakubowicz has responded to the damning interview that Mathieu Valbuena gave this morning to Le Monde.

Do Mathieu Valbuena’s comments this morning change the notion of the “positive intermediary” Karim Benzema that you have defended?

No. When they see each other in Karim Benzema’s room in Clairefontaine, Karim effectively invites Mathieu Valbuena to get into contact with his friend. He also says to him: “If you have warned your family, don’t pay.” But why does he invite Mathieu Valbuena to come into contact with his friend? There are two versions.

The first: so that he pays but that is never said and it is not what Mathieu Valbuena thinks at the time of this conversation. It is what he thinks upon reflection. The second version consists of saying: “Me, I like Mathieu Valbuena, you do not mess with my friends. It turns out that I have a friend called Karim Zenati who has certain acquaintances and contacts with the thugs of Marseille. And to say to them: “Don’t mess with my friend.”

There we are in an intermediation that is positive. Who can tell you the truth today? What I contest formally, is the unequivocal vision in this case, as a charge against Karim Benzema despite that there is not a single objective element that can affirm it [his wrongdoing].

This interview therefore does not change your defence?

No. My defence is summarised by two things. Karim is effectively an intermediary, but he is a positive intermediary and not a negative one. The declarations of Mathieu Valbuena are not dishonest but they are subjective in the light in which he understood them, a way that he would not have understood before filing his legal complaint.

This is the first time that I see a victim of blackmail who is not the first to be heard in a case on the role of each individual! He says in Le Monde that the police officers told him: “Do not worry, we do not need your testimony.” But what are they mixing up the policemen? Since when have they been investigating? They are losing their marbles!

Moreover, in my complaint regarding the violation of the privacy of the investigation, I will ask the judge to take a very very close interest in the people who ran this investigation because it is not excluded that the leak came from there.

Mathieu Valbuena has said that he is very disappointed by Karim Benzema…

Disappointment is not an offence. And honestly I understand him. When you read the re-transcription of the conversation with Zenati… He said that they took him for an idiot so not to say pillock. It is true what he is saying during that moment is not very nice. He speaks still of a lack of respect notably with the term “tarlouze” (meaning essentially a fagg**) but that never happened.

Karim explained himself. We are effectively not drowning in the poetic nature of the moment during this conversation. But Karim indicated that in front of the judge. It happens to him when he is speaking to his friends to overplay things. And that is what Mathieu Valbuena says to the judge when he says that there is a gap between his conversation with Karim and that between Karim Benzema and Karim Zenati. Mathieu Valbuena is perfectly honest.

Upon reading Mathieu Valbuena’s interview, one has the impression that the defence for Karim Benzema has been weakened…

Absolutely not. The defence of Karim Benzema is of total peace of mind. Ligue 1 side EA Guingamp have announced that full-back Jonathan Martins Pereira will be returning to Brittany after reaching a deal to terminate his current contract with French top flight strugglers ESTAC Troyes.

The left-back will have a medical tomorrow, before being put in front of the press on Wednesday.

Angers have made contact with attacker David Pollet’s entourage about a possible move, according to our colleagues at RMC.

The newly-promoted Ligue 1 side have not made any formal loan offer with an option to buy to Belgian side Charleroi, but that is the type of move they would look to make should they decide to pounce.

It seems unlikely that Angers will move for the player, having already agreed a deal with Standard Liege to sign Mohamed Yattara.
