CHICAGO, IL — Two Chicago police officers were struck and killed by a train on the city’s far South Side Monday evening. During a press conference late Monday, officials identified the officers as Eduardo Marmolejo, 36, and Conrad Gary, 31.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said both men were fathers of young children. Marmolejo had been with CPD for more than two years, and Gary joined 18 months ago, Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Marmolejo is the father of three children, while Gary is the father of an infant, according to ABC Chicago. Both were married.

“We’ve lost two young men, both fathers with young families. This holiday will never be the same for those two families,” Emanuel said.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the officers’ deaths, saying they were hit near 103rd and Cottage Grove in a “devastating tragedy.”

Guglielmi said at around 6:20 p.m., the officers were investigating a “shots fired” report and were engaged in a foot pursuit with a suspect who had gone onto the Metra tracks when they were hit by the outbound train. A weapon was found near where the officers were hit, and Guglielmi said a person of interest was taken into custody. Shell casings were also reportedly found.

Metra said a Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) South Shore train headed for Indiana hit two people near 103rd Street. Inbound and outbound trains were stopped after the incident and Metra told riders to expect them to be “extensively delayed.” By 8 p.m., inbound and outbound trains on the Metra Electric South Chicago Branch were operating again.

The incident is only the latest tragedy for the Chicago Police Department. Last month, Ofc. Samuel Jimenez, 28, was killed along with Mercy Hospital ER doctor Tamara O’Neal and pharmacy resident Dayna Less after a gunman opened fire at the hospital.

The department lost several officers who took their own lives this year, including two officers with the 5th District, where Marmolejo and Gary served. In February, Cmdr. Paul Bauer was shot and killed by a man he was pursuing near the Thompson Center.

The incident is also not the first time a Chicago police officer was killed by a train in the line of duty. In 2002, Ofc. Benjamin Perez, 32, was using a rail overpass as cover during a stakeout on the West Side when he was hit and killed by a commuter train.
