Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday ordered millions of New Yorkers to stay home, joining millions more people on lockdown in Illinois, Connecticut, New Jersey, Nevada and California as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio urged President Donald Trump to deploy the military “as the only force that can save us.”
Under the policy, which Cuomo is calling PAUSE, only essential businesses — health care workers, food suppliers, pharmacies, utilities — can have commuting workers, Cuomo said.
It will go into effect Sunday evening and will not affect public transit, according to the governor.
“We have to do it,” Cuomo said. “Everyone has personal liberty. But everyone has a responsibility to everyone else.”
Mayor de Blasio said New York City is now the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis in the United States as the number of cases passed 4,000 and 26 people have died.
