MI Governor: Coronavirus Numbers A Sign For 'Cautious Optimism'

MICHIGAN — The state once again reported fewer than 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, which Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said is a sign for “cautious optimism” moving forward. However, the governor said another stay-at-home order extension could be looming as to not proceed too hastily during the pandemic.

Michigan reported 999 new cases of the virus, bringing the statewide total to 33,966. The state also reported an additional 113 new coronavirus deaths, bringing the total number of deaths attributed to the virus to 2,813.

While the numbers may seem hard to look at, Whitmer said, Michigan is doing “incredibly well compared to other states.”

“(The numbers) show that the vast majority of people in our state are doing their part,” Whitmer said. “They show that social distancing is working.”

However, the governor teased that another extension to her stay-home order could be being looming. When the state does begin to reengage and re-open, Whitmer said, it was need to be done in a thoughtful and precise manner.

“We’ve got to get this right,” Whitmer said. “That’s the most important thing, as I talk to business leaders, I’ve talked to families, I’ve talked to those who’ve lost a loved one to COVID-19. We all recognize that a second wave would be devastating to our state, to our people and to our economy.”

Coronavirus Impact in Detroit, Wayne County

While Detroit leads the state in reported cases of the coronavirus, it has seen improvement in the trend of its numbers.

Detroit officials on Wednesday reported the city has 8,105 cases of the coronavirus. Of those, 733 people have died — up from 728 reported as of Tuesday.

However, Mayor Mike Duggan on Wednesday told reporters he’s been seeing improvements throughout the city, including the number of hospital beds occupied by patients with the coronavirus, as well as the number of patients at the TCF Center field hospital.

“When you look at the hospital data today, all of those numbers coming out of the hospitals look good,” he said.

Wayne County, which on Wednesday reported that its totals have reached 6,535 cases and 572 deaths, has seen a significant economical impact from the virus.

The county on Tuesday announced it is facing a $152 million deficit due to the coronavirus.

With initial projections showing a revenue loss of $152 million over the second half of the county’s current 2019-2020 fiscal year, county officials are working on an updated two-year budget forecast that assesses every fund and department as well as evaluated potential investment losses in pension and other post-employment benefit plans.

State numbers are released daily at 3 p.m. but are indicative of what has been reported by 10 a.m. that day.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.
