St. Cloud State charts impressive results at 2014 Husky Open

#5 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (1-0) turned in an impressive effort at the 2014 Holiday Inn/Husky Open, which was hosted by the Huskies in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse on Saturday, Dec. 13.

No team scores were kept at this open tournament but the Huskies dominated the field by gaining seven weight bracket championships on the day. The John Oxton Award winner for the tournament’s MVP was SCSU’s Clint Poster at 157-pounds, while SCSU’s Travis Holt won the Jack Gause Award (Most Falls) in the tournament for his work in the 157-pound bracket.

The Huskies Tim Prescott placed second at 125-pounds, while Jarred Oftedahl placed first in the 133-pound division for SCSU. Oftedahl scored a 5-2 decision over Joseph Herr of UW-Parkside in the title bout at 133.

At 141-pounds, Curt Zachmeier of SCSU gained top honors thanks to a 4-3 victory over former Husky Zach Stewart, who was competiting as an unattached wrestler on Dec. 13. At 149-pounds, SCSU’s Josh Howk won the top spot with a 3-2 win over Jay Hildreth.

At 157-pounds, Poster remained undefeated this season with a 4-0 record that included two falls, a tech fall and a 15-2 major decision victory over Lane Biasius of Augustana in the title bout. Poster has won four tournament titles this season and currently owns a 16-0 record and is ranked second in the nation at 157-pounds.

At 165-pounds, SCSU’s Gabe Fogarty brought home the top spot with a 3-0 record that included a :49 over UW-Parkside’s Nick Fishback in the championship match. At 174-pounds, SCSU’s Clayton Jennissen placed second after losing a close 2-0 match against Wisconsin-Parkside’s Nick Becker.

SCSU returned to the top of the podium at 184-pounds as Dylon Braun scored a first place finish after gaining a 5:46 pin against Montrail Johnson of UW-Parkside. The day was capped with a first place finish for the Huskies at 285-pounds by Austin Goergen, who charted a 4-0 record. He posted three falls on the way to the title and finished the bracket with a 6-1 win over teammate Mike Hobbs in the championship bout.

St. Cloud State will return to the mats on Jan. 4 with a trip to the Comfort Inn Central Missouri Duals in Warrensburg, Mo.
