Chris DeJoseph On If Staple Matches Will Return in Lucha Underground Season 4, Surprise Cameos, Creative Approach

El Rey Network’s popular Lucha Underground series returns with season four on June 13, and the anticipation has built to a fever pitch. Loyal and patient “Believers” wondering what comes next. Hoping to get some answers, I sat down with co-executive producer Chris DeJoseph and below is part two of the interview. You can check out part one at this link.

And with the extra time in between, do you feel like that helped give it even more of a quality product. Did you feel you had more time to flesh out the characters and stories of where you guys wanted to go?

Not necessarily. I’m always thinking. Our team is always thinking about things we can do at Lucha Underground. We moved. We have a new Temple. That brought its own challenges, but it’s super exciting because it gives Lucha Underground a chance to get a fresh coat of paint and continue right where we left off with the most honest, craziest show in the world.

We’ve seen so much in the past seasons. A little bit of everything. What was the challenge like to continue that creativity and try to find new ways to wow people?

We’re always trying to think of things outside the box. I think one of the main things we try to do is to keep the focus on the story. As long as we are telling a good, compelling story, then I think everything else will come along with it. I will tell you this season some of the action is incredible in and out of the ring. Some of the storylines, the twists, the turns. Keeping the audience on the seat of their pants. We tried our best to achieve that goal, so hopefully everyone is very happy with the surprises and hooks.

How would you compare the feel of this season to the past ones? What were you going for this season?

I think all the seasons have a great feel as far as the action in the ring. I think one of the big themes this season is sacrifice. What these characters are willing to sacrifice to achieve their goals. I think that is a huge theme into season four.

Can fans expect some of the staples fans have seen in the past such as Aztec Warfare and things like that?

Definitely. Fans can expect new matches as well as some of the old favorites. On the first episode, fans will see one of biggest matches in Lucha Underground. One of our big staples. You guys should watch.

One of the surprises for me in the past season was seeing Lorenzo Lamas being on the show. Can we expect more from other walks of life to find their way in roles?

There will definitely be some surprise cameos. You’ll also get to see some cool celebrity fans that come to the show that are fans of Lucha Underground. I know that Vanilla Ice came once, which was amazing to see at the Temple in an ice house ironically. He just sat there as a fan cheering along. He was so enthusiastic and just showed up to watch some Lucha Underground. I think that is cool and goes to show that not only in LA where it has its own cult following. But there is this following around the world that has that has this cool underground fight club feel. When you get to go to it, it’s pretty special. And when you watch it, it’s pretty special too. There will be some cool shocking cameos on this season for sure. Lots of fun.

Watch season four of Lucha Underground Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. on El Rey Network starting June 13.
