Augsburg 34, Saint John’s 12

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning seven of 10 bouts, including six by bonus-point margins, No. 6-ranked Augsburg College scored a 34-12 triumph over Saint John’s University in a wrestling dual meet on Sunday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg, ranked No. 6 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll, collected three pins, a technical fall and two major decisions in a victory that took just 1:02 to complete.

Defending national champion Mike Fuenffinger (SR, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally in the Division III national rankings at 125, opened the match with a 2:37 pin, improving to 22-1 on the season. Of his 22 victories, 18 are bonus-point victories. (six pins, three technical falls, nine major decisions). He has won 19 straight matches.

Tommy Teigen (SR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) claimed his second pin of the weekend and ninth of the season, with a 2:12 pin at 184 pounds. Teigen is now 17-7 on the year.

Gable Frandsen (FY, Ellsworth, Wis.) improved to 10-6 on the season with a 1:11 pin at 157 pounds for the Auggies.

Will Keeter (SR, Twin Falls, Idaho) took advantage of two takedowns and four near-falls to score a 16-0, second-period technical-fall victory at 149, his third technical fall of the season. Keeter, ranked No. 10 nationally, is now 22-8 on the season.

No. 9-ranked 133-pounder Chad Bartschenfeld (SR, Amery, Wis.) improved to 20-7 on the season with a 9-1, major-decision victory, building 4:25 of riding time along the way. Bartschenfeld has now won 10 matches in a row.

Donny Longendyke (SO, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), ranked No. 7 at heavyweight, used two takedowns, a near-fall and 2:43 of riding time to score a 9-0, major-decision win to close the match. A transfer from Division I Nebraska, Longendyke is now 28-2 on the season with 22 bonus-point victories (13 pins, one technical fall, six major decisions). He has won 20 matches in a row.

Austin Boniface (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) improved to 8-5 on the season with a 13-9 victory at 165 pounds over the Johnnies’ Teddy Erickson. Boniface built a 9-2 lead after two periods and held off a rally by Erickson, claiming a reversal with 20 seconds left in the third period to take a 12-9 lead.

Nick Hoff claimed a 1:49 pin of Augsburg’s Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at 174 pounds for the Johnnies.

No. 9-ranked 141-pounder Ben Henle rallied from a 2-1, first-period deficit with an escape and takedown in the second period, along with 1:38 of riding time, to score a 5-3 win over Augsburg’s Marcus Hamer (SO, Kimball, Minn.).

Ryan Michaelis claimed three takedowns in the final two periods to score a 7-2 upset win over Augsburg’s No. 7-ranked 197-pounder Matt Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.).

Saint John’s hosts Ridgewater Community College in a dual meet on Wednesday (1/28) at 7 p.m.

Augsburg hosts St. Olaf in a dual meet on Friday (1/30) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
