The fan in question ran on in the midst of a PSG counter-attack, reaching Lionel Messi and putting an abrupt end to the chance.

The individual was held in police custody until his hearing. It remains unclear as to how he was able to evade the Vélodrome security and enter the pitch.

Samuel Kalu signs Watford contract but work permit causes delays

L’Equipe report that Nigerian winger Samuel Kalu has completed his move from Bordeaux to Watford, having put pen to paper on a deal with the Premier League side.

The move has not been put at risk by Claudio Ranieri’s sacking yesterday, as the club currently lie in 19th in the league. Les Girondins are set to receive up to €4m in transfer fees depending on the number of appearances the forward makes.

However, the move has been delayed by a work permit (“Governing Body Endorsement”) issue – an exemption request has had to be made as Kalu does not have the necessary playing time to reach the 15-point total to play in the Premier League.

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi: “We’ve received huge offers to buy the club.”

In Monday’s interview with The Athletic, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi spoke about the future of the Champions League, suggesting an opening ceremony, but also discussed the value he feels has been added to Paris Saint-Germain since the Qatari investment, rejecting the criticism that the purchase of the club was an instance of sportswashing.

“For us, coming to PSG was like buying a little business that was losing money, so you needed to inject and invest money. We bought PSG for €70 million. Now it’s worth many times that and we’ve received huge offers to buy the club. So, from where we’ve come from, it shows that it’s an investment project. We’ve added value to European football in spending money at PSG.”

Caen hoping to sign Angers Romain Thomas

As reported by Le10Sport, Angers’ long-serving defender Romain Thomas is interesting Ligue 2 side Caen ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 33-year-old centre-back, who joined the club in 2013, is nearing the end of his Angers contract this July and no decision has yet been made on if he, and other long-serving defenders such as Vincent Manceau and captain Ismaël Traoré, will be kept at the club for next season.

Sensing an opportunity, Caen, led by former Angers coach Stéphane Moulin, are hoping to convince Thomas to drop down a division this summer despite having struggled to compete for a playoff spot in the second tier this term.

Christophe Galtier will officially sign PSG deal early next week

According to L’Équipe Christophe Galtier will officially become Paris Saint-Germain’s manager either on Monday or Tuesday next week, not signing a deal until the Parisian side starts preparations for pre-season.

The resumption of training in the capital will be placed under Galtier’s authority, and the official announcement of his arrival will take place immediately following it. Around the same time, the termination of Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG contract will also be made official. Whilst there is no currently scheduled press conference to introduce Galtier, it would not be until at least Tuesday.

L’Équipe have confirmed what RMC were reporting earlier this week, with Galtier set to take over pre-season preparations next week. This comes after a deal was struck between OGC Nice and Paris Saint-Germain over a €4-5m deal to secure Galtier’s services.

This is added to the cost of terminating Pochettino’s and his staff’s contracts – which is estimated to be around €15m, meaning PSG could pay up to €20m to switch managers this summer.

Alpine: Three-week spring break for F1 perhaps ‘a way forward’

Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer says this year’s unintended three-week break in April for F1 could be “a way forward” for the sport in terms of managing its schedule in the future.

F1’s return to Shanghai after a three-year hiatus due to Covid was initially earmarked for this week, with the race being held on April 16.

But with the number of coronavirus cases remaining an issue in China, the promoters for the country’s F1 event as well as the sport’s chiefs wisely opted to cancel the event, which has left a three-week lull in the calendar.

With a record 23 races on the docket this season, teams and crews will be stretching it thin from Baku et the end of this month to F1’s summer break at the end of July.

Szafnauer therefore sees a case to be made for F1’s spring break to become an annual respite in the calendar.

“This break, although not planned, in a calendar that has 23 races and a lot of back-to-backs and triple-headers, it’s nice to have a three week-break now, a three-week break in August and a break at Christmas,” argued the Alpine team principal.

“Maybe if it’s just so by luck that we gain the knowledge that it’s good to do it this way. Maybe it should be by design in the future.

“I know the season just started but it’s not about just the start of the season because a lot of people have worked hard over the winter, prepared the car for testing, then the races and now to have a bit of a break just helps you in what’s coming up.

“And then in August, you have another break. It might be a way forward.”

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner agreed with Szafnauer that the current break is useful to allow team personnel to recharge their batteries ahead of F1’s upcoming grueling run from Baku to Spa.

“There’s an opportunity to have a little bit of rest because the rest of the season will be tough,” said Steiner. “I just said to the guys, ‘Take it easy in these three weeks, don’t do anything I wouldn’t be doing'”.

As far as F1’s drivers are concerned, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is also delighted with F1’s spring interlude, but not for his personal benefit. The Monegasque rather sees the period as an opportunity for Ferrari to get its act together after a difficult start to its 2023 campaign.

“I think in the situation we are in as a team, we take this as an opportunity to work as much as possible during this break in order to get upgrades as quickly as possible and be as competitive as we want the sooner in this season,” Leclerc commented.

“It’s still a very, very long season, we’ve only done two races. So, we are fully motivated to get back on top. And we’ll try to use these weeks in the best way possible.”

McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri says F1’s break offers a chance to take stock of his performances in the first three races of the season.

“It’s a nice opportunity to look back at the first three races of my F1 career and digest what went well, what went not so well,” the Aussie said.

“And it’s a bit of a reset for the rest of the year. So, I think it’ll be nice for everyone.

“Obviously, you want to keep that momentum if you’re going well, it’s a good chance to reset if you’re not, so I think we’ll use it to our advantage.”

Gonçalo Inácio lined-up as Presnel Kimpembe replacement at PSG

PSG are preparing for the potential departure of Presnel Kimpembe (26), who has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea. Should the Frenchman depart, Sporting Lisbon’s Gonçalo Inácio (20) is being lined up as a replacement, according to Fabrizio Romano.

A natural centre-back, but also capable of filling in at left-back, Inácio is “really appreciated” by Luis Campos. Whilst Kimpembe is reportedly reticent to a departure from the Parc des Princes this summer, it has previously been reported that PSG would be willing to let the academy product leave for a fair price.

Negotiations between Chelsea and PSG are continuing, whilst the London club have also reactivated discussions over Jules Koundé (23).

Portuguese U21 international Inácio has already made 70 appearances for Sporting Lisbon, scoring at an average of a goal every 10 games. Last season in the Liga Portugal, he made 28 appearances and scored four goals. He is just “one of the options on PSG’s list.”

Ligue 1 22/23, Round 2, 14/8/22

NICE – 1 (Delort 35)

Kasper Schmeichel, 7 – The Dane made two superb saves on his home debut, a smart lunge at Gameiro’s feet early, when he was one-on-one, before a snap low hand to stop Diallo just after halftime while he marshaled his defence with typical authority, as if he’d been at the club for years.

Jordan Lotomba, 4

Jean-Clair Todibo, 6

Dante, 3 – Positionally awry and he was often a little clumsy or loose in his tackling. Nearly 39, he’s starting to look a little too slow for this level and could become a liability.

Melvin Bard, 5

Mario Lemina, 5

Khéphren Thuram, 5

Rareș Ilie, 3

Amine Gouiri, 6 – Scrapes a six after he phased in and out of the game and was withdrawn halfway through the second half but there were flashes of his quality, however, one of which led to the opener as he was too quick for Nyamsi to win the penalty.

Calvin Stengs, 5

Andy Delort, 6

Others: Rosario 5, Ramsey 5, Brahimi 5, Atal 5, Daniliuc 5.

STRASBOURG – 1 (Gameiro 55)

Matz Sels, 5

Gerzino Nyamsi, 3 – He was superb last season but his performance here was cumbersome at times and he was occasionally flustered by Delort having made a rash, late tackle to give away the penalty for the opener.

Alexander Djiku, 4

Maxime Le Marchand, 5

Thomas Delaine, 6

Dimitri Liénard, 5

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, 5

Jean-Eudes Aholou, 5

Adrien Thomasson, 6 – He was quiet for much of the first hour but delivered a deft clipped through ball for the equaliser and was a key instigator for Strasbourg for much of the second half.

Kevin Gameiro, 6

Habib Diallo, 4

Others: Prcić 5, Ajorque 5, Diarra 5, Senaya 5, Perrin 5.

St Étienne going after Irvin Cardona

L’Équipe report that Ligue 2 strugglers St Étienne have identified Brest attacker Irvin Cardona as a potential reinforcement in the final hours of the window.

Following the arrival of Algerian international striker Islam Slimani, SB29 will now seek to achieve some departures from their attacking ranks. Cardona is the fourth choice centre-forward, behind Slimani, Steve Mounié and Jérémy Le Douaron.

ASSE have been pushing for the last 48 hours for the player – Cardona knows that his days are numbered at Brest. Les Verts and Laurent Batlles are willing to make major financial efforts to convince Cardona to join.

Cardona has 12 months remaining on his current contract, and ASSE are most insistent, but the 25-year-old is also attracting interest from Strasbourg who have the player on their shortlist in the event that either Lebo Mothiba or Ludovic Ajorque depart before the end of the window.

Lille ready to offer €10m for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche

L’Équipe have revealed that Lille are interested in Monaco’s promising attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche (20), whilst Foot Mercato have reported that Les Dogues are willing to pay up to €10m for the France U20 international.

Akliouche featured in Monaco’s 1-1 draw against PSG on Sunday evening, replacing the injured Kevin Volland in the 20th minute, before being substituted himself later in the second half. However, during that time, Akliouche showed signs of promise and he is being courted not only by Lille, but also by Lorient, Werder Bremen and Real Sociedad.

Lille are interested in signing the Monaco attacker on a permanent basis and are prepared to spend €10m (including bonuses) to tempt the Principality club to sell.

However, any transfer could prove difficult. As L’Équipe have reported, Monaco are unwilling to let the player leave and his current deal runs until 2024. Due to the impending departure of Sofiane Diop, and the potential long-term absence of Kevin Volland due to injury, Philippe Clement is hoping to count on the player for the rest of the season.
