Official | Kenny Lala will sign for Brest on 1st January

As announced via the official channels of the club, Stade Brestois will be signing Kenny Lala on a permanent deal when the transfer window opens on 1st January 2022. This follows the Frenchman terminating his contract with Olympiakos several weeks ago.

The former Racing Club de Strasbourg defender has, from today, started training with the squad as Les Pirates prepare for their Ligue 1 return at the end of the month – although Lala will officially sign his contract at the club when the transfer window opens, meaning he’ll be unavailable for Brest until that time.

Lala arrived at Olympiacos in 2021 from Strasbourg, where he earned a provisional France call-up and won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2018/19. Since then the wing-back has played on 51 occaisons of which many appearances where in the Europa League and Champions League as well as winning the Greek championship two times. He terminated his contract following three managerial changes and not a single appearance this season.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi: “I would give the World Cup to both Lionel Messi & Kylian Mbappé if I could”

Speaking to RMC Sport last night, Paris Saint-Germain club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi adopted a diplomatic position on the World Cup final between France and Argentina, which sees Parisian teammates Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in direct competition for the trophy. The following was transcribed by L’Équipe:

The Qatari said that he was “looking forward” to the 2022 World Cup Final, saying that it will be a “great pleasure” to be present for the game. Al-Khelaifi then went on to say that he hopes France wins the World Cup, but that “Argentina also had a good World Cup with Lionel Messi” before finishing off with “If I could, I would give the trophy to both of them!”

This follows PSG’s neutral stance on the final, as to not pit two of their star players against each other – their internal communications have been instructed to manage social media accounts based on language and the eventual winner of the competition.

Marquinhos on PSG loss to Lens: “They were more clinical.”

As Paris Saint-Germain fell to their first defeat of the season, captain Marquinhos reflected on a match that saw the league leaders constantly put under pressure by a more tactically coherent Lens side, in another famous win masterminded by manager Franck Haise.

Speaking to Prime Video – as reported in RMC – the Brazilian defender recognised that tonight’s opposition were able to take their chances better than the champions, and played down the absences of both Neymar and Lionel Messi as factors in the loss.

The Brazilian forward missed the game after picking up two yellow cards in the midweek victory over Strasbourg, while the World Cup winner is only expected back next week, following his success in Qatar with Argentina.

For Marquinhos, this PSG side will have to improve heading into the second half of the season, as they look to retain their title in the face of a growing challenge from this sturdy Lens side:

“I think Lens were more clinical, both teams had chances in a very intense match. They were clinical, especially in the first half, they won the challenges that made the difference, we had chances to come back but we weren’t as efficient as they were. [On Messi and Neymar’s absences] They are great players who have made the difference before, but we’ve already won without them, we need to rediscover the team’s cohesion.”

Angers asking price for Azzedine Ounahi could discourage Napoli

Click:bone Conduction headphones factory

Azzedine Ounahi’s impressive World Cup performances did little to hurt his stock, as Morocco reached the semi-finals last month for the first time in their history. Napoli, one of many European clubs interested in Ounahi’s signature, have reportedly made an offer to Angers of €15m plus bonuses. But, in the face of the Ligue 1 team’s the demands, the Azzurri will not employ desperate transfer tactics to secure his signature, per Ignazio Genuardi.

The Neapolitans will find themselves in competition with Premier League sides Leeds United and Leicester City if they wish to sign the young Moroccan midfielder. But Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis has limited capital flexibility, and cannot afford to enter costly bidding wars. But with Napoli seven points clear at the top of Serie A, Ounahi may well see his future in Naples regardless. Back at Angers, his side are currently bottom of Ligue 1, having registered just two wins in 17 games. The allure of both Italian glory and potential European football next season may be too much to miss.

The situation at Leeds and Leicester is only marginally more promising than back in France: both sides sit just two points above the relegation zone, and just five off the bottom. If a club is to attract Ounahi’s signature in the coming weeks, Angers will demand that a commensurate fee be paid. If their demands are too high, Angers may finish by selling him in summer for a discounted fee, if they are to be relegated to Ligue 2.

Rennes considering a move for Lyon’s Karl Toko Ekambi

Stade Rennais are pondering a move for Olympique Lyonnais’ Cameroonian striker Karl Toko Ekambi (30), L’Equipe are reporting. The Brittany outfit are in the market for attacking reinforcements following the long-term knee injury of free-scoring forward Martin Terrier (25) and Arnaud Kalimuendo’s (20) spell on the sidelines. The former PSG and Lens forward hurt his hamstring during last Sunday’s gutsy win against PSG. Rennes manager Bruno Genesio can now only rely on Amine Gouiri (22) to play centre-forward for the fifth-placed Ligue 1 outfit.

L’Équipe report that Rennes would favour a move for a versatile striker, able to play as a n°9 or a winger, with Karl Toko Ekambi fitting the bill. The 30-year-old Lyon forward is finding life increasingly difficult at the Groupama Stadium – he has only scored four goals and registered two assists in 19 Ligue 1 games. He was roundly booed last Saturday by his own fans when Lyon trailed against relegation battlers Strasbourg and let it all out by kicking a trashcan on his way to the dressing room. Karl Toko Ekambi’s contract with the Rhône outfit expires in June 2024.

Official | Toulouse sign Swiss midfielder Vincent Sierro

Toulouse have announced the signing of BSC Young Boys midfielder Vincent Sierro (27). Sierro is the third player to be recruited by Les Violets this January after defenders Warren Kamanzi and Gabriel Suazo.

The 27-year-old Swiss played 21 games with the Bern-based outfit this season, scoring three goals and registering one assist. He won the Swiss Super League twice, in 2020 and 2021, and the Swiss Cup in 2020. He has already played European competition and was part of the BSC Young Boys side that defeated Manchester United in the Europa League two seasons ago.

Sierro is a box-to-box midfielder, in the same vein as 27-year-old Dutch midfielder Branco van den Boomen, whose contract with Toulouse expires at the end of the current season. Sierro has reportedly signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Philippe Montanier-led side, and may feature for the Occitanie side this Sunday afternoon when Toulouse traval away to Strasbourg for Ligue 1 gameweek 20.

Rennes make an offer for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche

Stade Rennais have made a €6m offer to AS Monaco for Maghnes Akliouche, according to a report from L’Équipe. The right-winger would join Rennes’ new arrival Karl Toko Ekambi if the Principality club are willing to let him go.

The 20-year-old made his debut in Ligue 1 in the 2021/22 season, but he only managed to appear for a total of 47 minutes across the entire campaign as he was used as a substitute. He has gained more playing time in the league across the current season, making several appearances in the starting 11. That said, he has not yet played a full 90 minutes for Les Monégasques.

Could grasses be greener in Brittany? Rennes (5th) are level on points with Monaco, who sit fourth as a result of goals-scored. Both teams have the same record (11W, 4D, 4L) and the same goal difference. But with a wealth of attacking options at Monaco, Akliouche’s chances of playing more may be greater at Roazhon Park. The French youth international is reportedly unwilling to extend his contract, which currently has him on the Mediterranean coast until 2024.

Monaco reject Rennes’ €10m offer for Maghnes Akliouche

L’Équipe are reporting that AS Monaco have rejected Stade Rennais’ €10m offer for attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche (20).

Rennes have returned to make a second bid for the player after their initial €6m offer was rejected. The Breton club joined Lille OSC in the race to sign the Monaco academy product, whose entourage has expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation at the club.

In an interview with Nice-Matin, the player’s family have said that promises about game time this season haven’t been met, whilst also evoking the possibility of a departure on loan, or permanently.

Akliouche, has featured in eight games for Les Monégasques this season, but only half of those have been starts. He scored his first professional goal in the club’s shock Coupe de France defeat against Rodez.

According to sources contacted by Get French Football News, Monaco are reticent towards sanctioning Akliouche’s departure. The club still count on him in the long term, and would only be tempted into negotiating in the case of a very significant offer. The France U20 international’s contract runs until 2024.

PSG had hoped to sign Malcom for free

L’Équipe are reporting that Paris Saint-Germain sporting adviser Luis Campos had hoped to sign Zenit Saint-Petersburg winger Malcom (25) on a free during the January transfer window.

The Brazilian winger was one of several targeted during the transfer window. PSG’s attack needed reinforcements following Pablo Sarabia’s departure to Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the window. Malcom, Olympique Lyonnais’s Rayan Cherki, PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko and Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech were all targeted. The latter almost signed for Les Parisiens on deadline day, and would have done if not for a series of administrative errors from the loaning club – Chelsea.

PSG’s pursuit of Malcom preceded their move for Ziyech. It has now been revealed that the Ligue 1 leaders believed that they could sign the player for free. The Portuguese sporting adviser was hoping to use the FIFA rule put into place which allows players of Russian and Ukrainian clubs to temporarily cancel their contracts. That rule, which was introduced after war broke out between the two countries, is valid until June 2023.

That would have allowed Malcom to sign for PSG as a free agent. However, upon studying Malcom’s contract, it was discovered that the Russian club had inserted a clause into the player’s extension last summer, which stipulates that he can’t make himself a free agent, thus allowing Zenit to demand a €30m fee that PSG were unwilling and unable to meet.

Liverpool boss Klopp to sue over Man City ‘xenophobia’ claim – ‘I would hate myself’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will reportedly take legal action having been accused of xenophobia against Manchester City’s owners.

Klopp made comments on Friday about the relative spending power of his side compared with rival clubs and later insisted that he had been “misunderstood”.

The Reds boss was accused of lighting the touch paper ahead of the high-octane 1-0 win over City on Sunday which saw him shown a red card, coins thrown at Pep Guardiola, the City bus damaged and City fans engaging in chants about the Hillsborough disaster.

Asked specifically about reports alleging City believed his pre-match comments to be ‘borderline xenophobic’, Klopp said on Tuesday: “I don’t feel it at all. I know myself. And you cannot hit with something which is miles away from my personality. If I was – I cannot remember the word, wow! – like this I would hate it.

“I would hate myself for being like this. I have said a lot of times things that were a little bit open for misunderstanding. I know that. It was not intentional, just sometimes you say things and you think, ‘Oh my God! It can be interpreted like this?’ But this is not one of these moments. Absolutely.”

There is now a tense relationship between the two clubs and their fans but Klopp doesn’t think it necessary to smooth things over before their next meeting.

“I am not sure we have to be best friends with other clubs,” said Klopp. “I don’t think anybody wants to be best friends with us. It is a completely normal competition.

“It started here (in Friday’s press conference) with a question and I answered it and all the rest was made of it. I know what I thought when I said it and I thought I put it in perspective and said how much I respect what they (City) are doing.

“Obviously, it was still not right for some. As a club and a team with our supporters we showed an incredible performance. And then if something happens and one fan throws a coin it is a massive mistake and it will get punished, definitely.”

Despite Klopp’s willingness to put much of the tension behind him, the Irish Independent claim he is looking to ‘take legal action’ over the xenophobia claims.

Given this and everything that happened on Sunday, perhaps Klopp should feel a need to smooth things over to avoid tensions building to the clubs’ next meeting, when something really bad could happen.

Does he not have a duty of care?
