Cooling in Semifinals as Three Mavericks Advance to Day Two of NCAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Mavericks advanced to day two of the NCAA Championships Friday. Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) advanced to the semifinals while Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) and Matthew Blome (Fr., 197 lbs.) also will move on to the second day of wrestling.

Cooling finished the first day of the competition with a perfect 2-0 record. He defeated Bruno Nicoletti (Colorado Mesa) for the second time this season in the first round of the NCAA Championships. A 3-2 decision over Nicoletti would be enough to earn Cooling a trip to the quarterfinals. There Cooling would take the mat against Bradley Metz (Findlay). Cooling won the match by a 4-2 decision and advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year.

Abernathy began his tournament with a fall over Nathan Bowlen (Seton Hill) in 5:39 to advance to the quarterfinals. There Abernathy lost a narrow 7-8 decision to Jordan Murphy (Ashland), landing him in the consolation bracket. In his third match of the day Abernathy won a 12-2 major decision against Tyler Hughes (Lake Erie) to finish with a 2-1 record and advance to the second day of the NCAA Championships.

Blome advanced to day two of the NCAA Championships after finishing 2-1 Friday. Blome lost his first match to Luke Cramer (Ashland) by an 11-3 major decision. In the consolation bracket Blome was tied 6-6 in the third period against Terrance Fanning (Wheeling Jesuit) where he was able to turn Fanning for a pin in 5:56. Blome continued his pin streak in his second win of the day against Evan Rosborough (Lake Erie), winning by fall in 0:50.

Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) finished with 0-2 record Friday to conclude his season. In his first match at the NCAA Championships, Herman lost to top seeded Cody Law (Pitt- Johnstown) by a 17-4 major decision. Herman dropped an 11-1 major decision against Bryan Dutton (Central Oklahoma) in the consolation bracket in his second match. Herman finished his junior year with a 19-12 record and 13 pins for Minnesota State.

Wrestling will resume Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., with semifinal and consolation bracket matches. The finals will take place Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.
