San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane might need to drop the gloves with a Las Vegas casino that is suing the feisty Canadian for allegedly not paying back $500,000 in gambling markers.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas filed the lawsuit Monday, and court documents obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal said the 28-year-old took out eight credits of amounts varying from $20,000 to $100,000 in mid-April — while the Sharks were playing the Golden Knights in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Kane is in the middle of a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Sharks, and will have earned $81 million total by the time his contract ends in 2025.
The casino is also seeking repayment of legal fees stemming from the lawsuit.
This isn’t Kane’s first off-the-ice run-in with the law, for he was arrested after police said he grabbed three women by their hair and necks during separate altercations on the same night at a Buffalo bar while with the Sabres in 2016.
The charges were eventually dropped on the condition Kane stay out of trouble as part of a plea agreement, according to a prosecutor who described Kane’s alleged crime as “arrogant, boorish and surly, but not criminal.”
Kane has eight goals and four assists, along with 18 penalty minutes, in 12 games this season.
