According to new reports, the late Princess Diana had a pen pal throughout her short life in the spotlight, a beloved former steward at Buckingham Palace by the name of Cyril Dickman.
Dickman, who passed away in 2012, served as head steward at Buckingham Palace for more than 50 years. Recently, his grandson uncovered a series of letters from Princess Diana, which he plans to sell at auction—they’re valued at approximately $18,500.
Diana’s correspondence with Cyril spans many years, allowing a comprehensive look at Prince William and Prince Harry’s childhood.
In a letter dated Sept. 20, 1984, Princess Di speaks of 2-year-old William’s love for his newborn brother. “Dear Cyril, it was so very kind of you to have sent us such a lovely card, on the arrival of our small son—we both were greatly touched by your thoughtfulness and enormously appreciated it,” the princess wrote. “William adores his little brother and spends the entire time swamping Harry with an endless supply of hugs and kisses, hardly letting the parents near!”

Another letter, dated Oct. 17, 1992, details the young princes’ schooling: “The boys are well and enjoying boarding school a lot,” she wrote, “although Harry is constantly in trouble!” Aww, we hope Meghan Markle can keep the troublemaker in check!

The auction, scheduled for Jan. 5, will also offer additional pieces of royal memorabilia, including signed Christmas cards from Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and Prince Charles, as well as slices of cake from their respective royal weddings. (Word to the wise: Don’t eat those.)
